          Lasting impressions

My wing at IITB - The Outlaws. The name painted on the wall and the Name-room no.s on left are no longer there.
L-to-R: Me, Dasa, Jha saab, Mamu, Rizvi & Saras

This year it'll be four years since I graduated from IIT Bombay. Time flies. I realized this when I visited the campus back, couple of days back when I was visiting Mumbai to board the flight to London. It was great to have old friends, Nandu & DRS, with me. Torrents of memories rushed back, overwhelming me. Things have changed there, but not much, thankfully.

Bikes are obviously banned inside the campus now and I'm sure people aren't missing them much. I spent my entire 4 years without a bike (I once bought an old bicycle from an auction, but I used that very sparsly during her brief stay of about 2 months in my company) and if anything, it makes you enjoy the long walks. My department's (Comp. Sc & Engg.) old building is now abandoned, due to bad design. It was definitely "different", it boasted of design such that no two walls in the entire building were parallel. I'm sure not what exactly was the problem, but even during our times it had developed couple of cracks. Anyway, the department has now moved to the soulless KReSIT building. They have improved the tennis court; new ones look very sleek and posh, quite an improvement over the old ones. I saw some new shops in the Gulmohar building too.

What made me most happy was the visit to my old room. Hostel 9, room 224. I spent about two and a half years in that room. And it hadn't changed much.

H9-224. Home.
The murals are still preserved by the current resident

The hostel was almost the same too, barring the mess which was Hafeez-Contractor-ized after renovation; but I'm sure even Hafeez can't do much about the "mess" they serve in there! There was a swanky billboard outside the hostel, welcoming people to "Hostel Nine - Pluto." Neat.

Coming back to room, I gathered my guts and knocked the door. The room now belongs to a PhD candidate; I was shocked when he commented - "Oh! So you came to check out the old room. May be the old graffiti." And there it was! My wall. THE wall. Amazing sight! During my days in the room, I had made couple of figures on the wall. I was totally touched watching them still there. The same Popeye & Flintstone smiling back. The present resident told me that he loved them there and made sure that when they paint the walls they don't paint over them. Thank you my friend! Though they painted over the wing's name (Outlaws), but atleast the room still has my impressions.
          The Campus
The IIM Calcutta campus or Jokaland, as we call it, is almost like an island amid lakes.

The IIM Calcutta campus, courtesy Google Earth.

As it's evident from the Google Earth image, there are three major man-made lakes surrounding the academic block, the campus KV and library. Our hostels are along the lakes on the outside. The setting gets more clear in the Wikimapia image, as it has proper labelling too.

Compare it to the IIT Bombay campus and you'll find many similarities. Both the campus have the serene presence of beautiful water bodies and dense greenery. Right now the similarities get thicker, since the Calcutta weather nowadays is quite like Mumbai monsoons; it stays cloudy with frequent short showers. Due to the lakes, it stays humid at the campus and if it's not windy, it can get really stifling. The IIMC campus is much smaller than IITB campus, and obviously since IITB is meant for much bigger number of junta. It used to house 4 BTech batches, each of roughly 500 plus huge number of MTechs and few PhDs too. Here at IIMC there are just two batches at a given point of time. My batch's strength is around 310 and that's the largest number they've ever had.

One thing paining me is the distance from the downtown Kolkata. Last night I enquired about ordering pizza and I got to know that the minimum order they take is something as obscene as 6k!! That's because the nearest outlet is at Camac Street or like that :-). But, the food in the mess & (almost) 24 hrs canteen in the hostel is much better than IITB. But eating out is still an issue. Nearest Metro station is some 100 bucks away from IIMC and there aren't many options to reach there. I guess things would get brighter once my bike reaches Kolkata.

Today I took some pictures at the campus. I've uploaded them at the Flickr page. Most of them need little bit of postprocessing, which I plan to do soon.
          05/09/17: Sensual Mathematics Exhibition
An exhibition of the Aalto University course: Crystal Flowers in Halls of Mirrors: Mathematics meets Art and Architecture

Sensual Math

The final exhibition of the transdisciplinary course at Aalto University is a concrete opening to enhance the interaction between scientific and artistic practices. It aims to break clichés related to mathematics by bringing deep phenomena of the field to the level of human experience.

Open-minded collaboration across the conventional barriers between disciplines enables the pursuit of diverse goals and aims. The exhibition also presents inspiring examples and ideas of new directions for education, from early childhood to research level. Students on the course come from different Schools of Aalto from freshmen to PhD students.

“Sensual Mathematics” is an expression of an intimate, inseparable relation between the sensual and the rational approaches of each team of students towards low dimensional geometry and topology.

The vertical artworks of the exhibition create a natural space inviting the visitor to wander into its forest-like growth.

08/18/17: Defence in the field of architecture: M.Sc. (arch) Julle Oksanen
The focus of the dissertation is on achieving change in the existing architectural outdoor lighting design paradigm by introducing the use of heuristic metaphors, modern - and also forgotten lighting design tools in practical architectural lighting design projects.

M.Sc. (arch) Julle Oksanen will defend his dissertation Design Concepts in Architectural Outdoor Lighting Design Based on Metaphors as a Heuristical Tool on Wenesday 18 August 2017.

Opponent: PhD, prof. Ihab Elzeyadi, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Custos: prof. Anssi Joutsiniemi, Aalto University Department of Architecture

Discussion will be in English

MORE INFORMATION:

Architectural outdoor lighting design is currently based on strictly rule and system oriented technical lighting design. This method is totally impervious to external feedback and creative aesthetic development. The focus of the dissertation is on achieving change in the existing architectural outdoor lighting design paradigm by introducing the use of heuristic metaphors, modern - and also forgotten lighting design tools in practical architectural lighting design projects.

The key tool to a successful design solution is “The Law of The Pragmatic Truth”. Pragmatism is a rejection of the idea that the function of thought is to describe, represent, or mirror reality. Instead, pragmatists develop their philosophy around the idea that the function of thought is that of an instrument or tool for prediction, action, and problem solving. We design buildings today according to these laws, although we now know that they are not theoretically perfect, they are however, precise enough for practical calculations and work in real life. “The Law of Pragmatic Truth” can be used as a tool to define pragmatic and collectively accepted “tolerances” between scientific research results and practical values in architectural outdoor lighting projects. Wise use of this tool also saves huge amounts of energy in public lighting.

The dissertation presents important and partly new design elements and their development. The dissertation delves deeper into the principle structures of the design core and its elements than the basic practical architectural lighting design tools. It opens the doors for creative aesthetic architectural outdoor lighting design world and can change its paradigm.

This dissertation is a work of interdisciplinary lighting design research, adding art and science in a harmonious and useful combination, focusing on the new paradigm for architectural outdoor lighting. However, it also provides tools and examples for future research on a change of approach to architectural indoor lighting and also for architectural design generally.

WELCOME!

The dissertation notice and the published dissertation are placed for public display at the Learning Hub Arabia (Hämeentie 135 C, 5th floor, room 570), at latest 10 days before the defence date.

          MENGEMBALIKAN LEGASI MURABBI

Berikut ialah ayat yang dimaksudkan;

Ternyata bukan.

Murabbi bukan sekadar datang seacara fizikal, bertanya khabar seputar kehidupan anak binaanynya lalu dia pun berlalu pergi.

Ternyata.

Lalu siapakah murabbi?

Pada hemah kami yang terbatas ini;

Hanya sahaja rahmat Allah masih sudi menyapanya.

Keseluruhan fikirannya berlegar sekitar mutarabbinya, binaannya.

          Harddisk Definition

Hard disk drive (HDD)
A computer hard disk drive (HDD) is the mechanism that controls the positioning, reading and writing of the hard disk, which furnishes data storage. A hard disk drive -- often shortened to hard drive -- and hard disk are not the same thing, but they are packaged as a unit and either term can refer to the whole unit. Hard disk drives can be found in desktop computers, mobile devices, consumer electronics and enterprise storage arrays in data centers.
5 Data Storage Technologies to Watch in 2016
For the past 13 years, the experts at SearchStorage.com have honored the best and brightest technologies for the upcoming year. As always, we're proud to present a batch of technologies we believe will make a big impact on the data storage market.

History of hard disk drives
The hard disk was created in 1953 by engineers at IBM who wanted to find a way to provide random access to high capacities of data at a low cost. The disk drives developed were the size of refrigerators, could store 3.75 megabytes of data and began shipping in 1956. Memorex, Seagate and Western Digital were other early vendors of hard disk drive technology.
Hard disk drive form-factor size has continued to decrease as the technology evolves. By the mid-1980s, 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch form factors were introduced, and it was at this time they first became a standard in personal computers (PCs).
Hard disk drive density has increased since the technology was first developed. The first hard disk drives were able to store megabytes of data, while today they are in the terabyte (TB) range. Hitachi released the first 1 TB hard drives in 2007. In 2015, HGST announced the first 10 TB hard drive.

BAB 2

KONSEP

Enterprise Unified Process

2.1 Pengertian Enterprise Unified Process

2.2.1 Pengertian Rational Unified Process

Proses pengembangan perangkat lunak yang dijelaskan kedalam beberapa disiplin terdiri dari empat elemen penting, yakni who is doing, what, how dan when. Dimensi ini terdiri atas
Business Modeling, Requirement, Analysis and Design, Implementation, Test, Deployment, Configuration dan Change Manegement, Project Management, Environtment.

¡¡Hola, holaa!!

          Dizzy While Running/Working Out
Question: My 12 year old daughter is very active and practices Volleyball/Conditioning 3-4 times a week. Lately she has complained of feeling dizzy, wanting to throw up, worried about passing out while playing, running or conditioning. She doesn`t have these symptoms other wise. Any ideas?

          Treadmill Knee Injuries
Question: I do a lot of running on my treadmill, I run four to five mile a day and I do feel pain in my knees. Can it be from the running on the treadmill? If so what should I do for the pain that I feel? Thanks.

Answer: Knee pain can easily occur after running on a treadmill. This is largely due to the overuse of your knee joint, and the fact that one thing that differentiates treadmill running from outdoor running is that the surface never varies on the treadmill. Because the surface of the terrain varies outdoors . . .

MOVE TOUR 12 Kick-off & Indayog sa Tagum

So, the MOVE TOUR just kicked off last Thursday Sept. 27, 2012. It's time for all the hustlin' and hard work to show. It was a hot day... and i mean... i-think-i-fell-and-landed-on-hell kind of HOT!!!! We left Davao at around 10:00 AM and arrived a wee pass 11:00. Our first stop was a "Gangnam Style" MobDance-turned-Street performance at the bus terminal at around 3:00 in the afternoon. And our concert shot at 9:00 PM at the Cultural Trade Center. We were exhausted & some be sick and weak including me. Honestly, we were not physically in tune that night, but we had to rise to the occasion.  We felt even more exhausted afterwards, especially after the trip back to Davao.  I personally felt bad, given our state i felt that we weren't able to provide our audience the show that we intended for them. I was very disappointed. But then, after the show I had people come up to me saying how much they enjoyed the show & how it made them wanna dance or dance on their seats, some 3 days after when we came back for our stint on AOD. And I actually felt a wee bit better, although i highly believe that we could have given them a much better show; but i was glad enough to learn that what we atleast gave them a decent run.

As i was saying, three days after we had to come back to perform a little stint on the Ambassadors of Dance pageant, as well as watch the Hip-Hop Dance Competition. I was still feeling under the weather though, but i decided to joi because i was excited to watch and route for my friends especially those from BSU (Bukidnon State University). BSU (the defending champs for the HIPHOP category) bagged the 3rd place this time out of seven roughin' competitors from different places. As for the Ambassador's title, BSU's Jun Pacquiao & Regel Lucero bagged 2nd & champion respectively.
On that note, I would like to congratulate all the participants and a special shout out to The Academy for claiming the Champion title at the HipHop category.

As I recover, i'm gearing up for the rest of the tour... see y'all!

From my perespective, as a Polish PhD student in chemistry, it is great that such an events happen and take place on a global scale. What really suprised me it is the broad portfolio of different project, which really hits the global markets. Before attending this Competition, I thought that it will be focused cleraly on ICT - having in mind that this is Intel Berkeley Technology Challenge. But in fact is an opposite direction. There is much more medical, pharma and healthcere project that the software or ICT project. This is in my oppinion very good indicator since most of these prject are extremely good and really makes a difference in the world.... Definitely, I will encourage my colleagues to take part in this competition in the future :-) MICHAL APEIRON

          Reflecting on a Good Decision
It’s now been a little more than a year since I signed the papers to leave the PhD program. In the 55 weeks since then I have had a grand total of zero regrets about it. I have zero regrets about leaving it and I have zero regrets about doing the work and learning what ... Read more
How do you earn the right to perform in Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe Revue? Make a left at Magic Mountain

Millions of people work in the entertainment industry. And of those folks, thousands of them make a living as actors. And of those thousands, hundreds of these performers are employed by theme parks. And of those hundreds of performers, only a couple of dozen actually work at Disneyland.

I bring this up because I want you to understand how long the odds were back in the late 1970s. When I initially set my sights on becoming a performer at that Anaheim theme park.

But wait ! The odds get longer still. I didn't want to be just a run-of-the-mill performer at Disneyland. I had my heart set on playing one specific role in one particular venue. A part that -- I should add -- had virtually no turn-over.

Back then, I wanted to be Wally Boag's understudy. I wanted to be the traveling salesman while Wally was otherwise engaged. I wanted to play Pecos Bill, spitting out those dried-lima-bean teeth, while Boag had split for parts unknown.

Mind you, it's not like I hadn't done any preparation for this role. At this point in my fledgling career, I had made dozens of trips to the Golden Horseshoe to watch Wally work. Marveling at the way that this veteran performer (who had literally performed some of these same gags tens of thousands of times) kept his traveling salesman & Pecos Bill routines feeling so fresh & new.

And what I learned from watching Boag ... I then applied to a character that I'd just been hired to play at Magic Mountain. One Prof. Samuel J. Spillikin, B.S., M.S., PhD. (“You know what B.S. Is? Well, M.S. is More of the Same, and PhD. is just Piled Higher & Deeper”).

A young boy listens to Professor Spillikin's pitch at Magic Mountain

The Professor spent his days lurking around Spillikin Corners Crafts Village. Where he'd then try & convince the good folks who'd come out for the day to Magic Mountain to come buy a bottle of Grandma Spillikin's Herbal Cure & Indian Elixir.

The character of Prof. Samuel J. Spillikin? He was obviously a crook and a scoundrel. But a crook and a scoundrel with a very entertaining line of patter. Which is why I'd invariably draw a crowd as I launched into my Medicine Pitch.

And each day that I worked at Magic Mountain, I tried to improve my performance. Find additional ways to engage the crowd. All with an eye toward gaining the experience that I needed so that I could someday trod the boards at the Golden Horseshoe.

Now working at another theme park may seem like an odd way to win a headliner's role at Disneyland. But over the years, I have learned that the very best way to get a job at Disney is to already excel at the job before you apply. And in order to be able to fill in for Wally someday, I first had to become as strong a comic performer as possible.

That Medicine Pitch opens a lot of doors for me. I start picking up convention work and private parties. And since the whole act fits into one large traveling case, I can go just about anywhere.

Bud Abbott (L) and Lou Costello (R) performing their
signature routine, "Who's on First?"

For example – Poppy's Star Restaurant. At that time, Poppy's was this new party place that had just opened in Canoga Park where the waiters, managers and kitchen staff are all musicians and variety performers. Working as a seater, I not only hone my "sales skills" with rowdy diners, I collaborate with many talented performers in a wide variety of formats. Partner Mitch Evans and I perform such classic variety turns as "Niagara Falls" and Abbott & Costello's "Who's on First?" Lou Costello's daughter Chris even praises our performance!

Alright ... It's 1979 and I've been pitching snake oil at Magic Mountain for 4 years when my sister happens to notice a small ad in Variety:

"Auditions for Golden Horseshoe Revue – Comics and Dancers needed for Disneyland's 25th Anniversary Celebration"

At last all my years of practice might now pay off.

The next time I'm at Disneyland, I sit in the Golden Horseshoe watching Wally and wonder what I should do for my audition. And I realize that the thing to do is my Medicine Pitch. That routine was different enough from Wally's traveling salesman bit to be reminiscent without seeming like a complete rip-off.

Wally's act always ends with his turn as Pecos Bill, in which he gets 'slugged' by the male singer and starts spitting out teeth. Dozens and dozens of teeth. It's a very funny bit, accomplished by using dried baby lima beans concealed in his cheek. On a whim, I catch one as it whizzes by me and put it in my pocket ... for luck.

On a December night in 1979, I check in at a backstage rehearsal hall in Anaheim for the cattle call auditions. About a hundred of the most beautiful women you can imagine are there in leotards and dance shoes to audition to be can-can dancers. After learning a dance routine, they all line up and -- one by one --jump into the air and come down on the floor in a full split. We comics just sit there, wincing noticeably.

At the auditor's table sit Wally Boag and Sonny Anderson, the then-head of Talent Booking for the Disney theme parks. When the dancers finish, they greet us funny guys warmly.

(Over the years I've attended dozens of auditions, and this is something I've always appreciated about Disney. Before they start seeing people, the folks in charge will welcome everyone and discuss candidly what they're looking for that day and what to expect at the audition. They answer questions and greet the folks they've seen before. Not every company does this, unfortunately. But it makes the whole experience that much less frustrating and frightening.)

Finally it's time to start seeing the comics. We all stay in that one room, so everyone will have an audience.

Everyone seems aware that Wally had been a mentor to Steve Martin, who was then at the very height of his fame as a stand-up comic. A few of the comics show up in Steve's trademark white suit with an arrow through the head and juggling balls and do his act. Some do one-liners or impressions. I begin to wonder if these guys have ever seen the Golden Horseshoe Revue.

I arrive in my traveling salesman rig with my medicine bag and bamboo cane. When my name is called, I start toward the front of the room. And as I pass the front table, I hear Sonny say to Wally “This is the kid I was telling you about.”

That's what those four years at Magic Mountain had bought me. By building my reputation at that other theme park, I had not only prepared myself for Disney. I had prepared Disney to hire me.

Today's moral: Stay where you are and do good work. The way to get that dream job with Disney (or anywhere else) is to start doing your best work somewhere else. So that when opportunity knocks, you're really ready to answer the door.

I ace the audition, because I'm able to show them exactly what they're looking for. And at the point in my act where my cane slips and I 'accidentally' strike myself on the head, I shake it off and spit out that dried lima bean that I'd caught earlier at the show. Wally fell off his chair, laughing.

Three weeks later, a letter arrives from Disneyland talent booking. “We're sorry to inform you that we have nothing to offer you at this time. Thank you for auditioning.” Ah, well. I had my shot.

Three months pass. It's the morning of April 15th. Summer is approaching and -- resigned to another year at Magic Mountain -- I'm about to head north to search for an apartment in Valencia. But I never make it out the door.

At 10:30 a.m., I get a call from Mike Davis at Disneyland Talent Booking, inviting me to start training the next day for the comic's role in Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe Revue. Supressing my glee, I tell Mike that I'm free.

The very next morning, I show up bright and early and giddy-as-hell at the Disneyland Administration Building. Where Mike welcomes me and ...

I'll tell you the rest of this story next week ...

Speaking of next week ... On March 29th, Ape Pen Publishing will be paying tribute to Wally Boag with "The Golden Horseshoe Dinner Show & Celebration." Which will be held at the Sheraton directly across from Disneyland. There are literally only a handful of tickets left for this event. Which will feature performances by Dana Daniels, Dick Harwick and many of the other entertainers that Mr. Boag has inspired over the years. Plus -- of course -- an appearance by the great man himself. So if you'd like to get in on the fun, you should fire off an e-mail off to themagicmakers@charter.net ASAP

As for Mr. Schneider ... He's still hard at work on his memoirs, "Themes, Dreams & Schemes: 40 Years Behind a Nametag." Which should hit store shelves by the late Fall / early winter of 2008.

The haunted house is both an exotic and familiar location - most of us tend not to see ourselves as 'living' there (unless by accident), but we know it when we see it. We may outwardly turn away, but inwardly feel an irresistible call to walk in its preternatural pathways. The haunted house is the figurehead of uncanny domestic architecture; a building that is 'not quite' (or out and out) 'not right' amidst the fulcrum of civilisation. Its uncanniness stems from its subversion of 'right', because homes should be safe, ordered places; we see homes all the time, they follow patterns, they should conform. Empty houses should be temporary inbetwixt states - they are not designed to be uninhabited. They need the living, the social, the normal to fulfil their purpose and function.

Our home is the outermost layer, the visual beacon, of our daily lives. But homes emerge from houses, and houses are seldom limited to one single occupant. Here in lies the raison d'etre of the haunted house: we create our homes from the homes of others. And just as we can be territorial about our claimed personal spaces, so too can the dead. Films about haunted houses circle around and recontextualise this problem of ownership to varying degrees, and often the stake of the dead, or other supernatural forces, cannot be placated in order to allow the living to truly move in - think Poltergeist, The Amityville Horror, The Haunting, The Woman in Black, even, in some respects, The Fall of the House of Usher. The idea that houses are tainted by, or bound to, past events is a useful tool for weaving together contemporary and historical narratives

I've been reflecting on haunted houses (more than usual) since spending an enchanting day of intellectual nourishment courtesy of The Alchemical Landscape conference organised by friends James and Evie. I've always been fascinated by haunted houses generally, but my imagination has often suckled inspiration from ruins and historical buildings, the haunted locale of the grandiose other. And then, quite unexpectedly, I found myself retracting the steps I would often take on my way to school, and thought of the house I passed there. The house reputed to be haunted.

There were not ghost stories as such attributed to this house, but it provided an uncanny fracture in an otherwise ordinary row of middle class suburban semi-detached and detached households. The house was un-tenanted because its previous owner had died, but the possessions of said owner still held court; you could see the tops of armchairs through the bottom of first floor windows. I knew this was somehow wrong, that it was in an inbetwixt state that suggested livedness and yet was not employed by the living. There is something deliciously sinister about furniture abandoned in houses, one of the most powerful representations - in my mind - of the inbetwixt and in-between.

In much of suburbia houses do not decay, they are kept in a constant flux of kemptness by the upkeep of their proprietors. One evening, a small group of childhood friends and I snuck around the back of this house after dark, and the sense of having entered into the uncanny was both frightening and delicious. No one lived there, but our presence was still an intrusion. Nevermind knowledge of the law, something deeper resonated that we were entering a space we should not be. We weren't the kind to push such trespass so left as quickly as we arrived, and yet a quiet part of me wanted desperately to stay and go further, to open the door and plunge into this strange portal. I was overwhelmed by my proximity to something mysterious, something that transcended the humdrum of a life I was already a little frustrated with.

I realise now my perceived sense of the house's ghostliness was its connectedness to neglect, and because it was a visual image of what comes after a demise, when there is not definitive end. This was lingering, a half life, a waiting. As is often the way, in areas that are reasonably affluent, and therefore desirable locations, the house was resurrected a few years later, the uncanny dissolved by a renovation and the reintroduction of living owners. I don't think I've been past there for well over a decade now. I don't think I'd recognise the site of it even I did go back, though it is only a minute or so from my parent's home.

The street that house stands on is still haunted though, albeit for an entirely different reason. You see, I walked past that house most days because I joined up with a friend who lived at the other end of the street. From there we'd brave the jitty (a small pathway linking that street to the back of a small church on a street at the other end), another liminal zone bordered by a wooden fence and trees that momentarily cut one off from the civilised comfort of being in proximity to other people's homes. Once in the clear, it was on to school and the dirge of adolescent education. The millennium ended and I left my home town for university... but such was not the course for my friend. L, who I had known since we were 7 or 8, was dead by the time she was 16, dead from a rare disease that had got into her brain after a bout of measles in early childhood, that had waited patiently, a quiet passenger until it finally killed her.

L's death was my first experiences of one that went against the natural order of things. Her parents, emptied by their loss, would wander vacantly, until a few years later their elder daughter had her first child and revived them. I raged against the Christian theology perpetuated by some of my peers and popular culture, for there was no argument that could satisfy as to why such a nice, innocent girl had been denied the rest of her life.

I can see myself in her house, when we were young. The memories are almost sensuous, and the sound of her voice is like the tail end of an echo at the end of a cave. I'm not quite sure how to capture that sense of revisiting a place that no longer exists, and yet remains at the back of our minds. Perhaps it is like that abandoned furniture, sitting quietly and changeless. Eventually, the fabric warps and dusts smear the shines of surfaces, but something of its original incarnation remains.

These memories have a sense of haunting about them, of being caught momentarily in a time out of time, transported, giving two fingers up to the laws of linear time. There are of course feelings attached now to these memories; feelings of guilt because I was going to visit her in hospital when she was in a coma, but a mutual friend called me after I'd returned from a short trip away, and she was gone. I've wondered if I'd been as good a friend to her as I should have been - we were not particularly close at that point, as we had quite different personalities and had drifted into different social groups.

I have had two memorable dreams about L, both during my PhD research into spirit mediumship. In the first dream, it was very bright, and we were sitting in a field of green grass and flowers. She was serene, and looked a little older. "Its good to see you," I think I said. The second was similar, only I had boarded a bus and gone up to the top floor where she sat and looked out of the window. I was delighted to find her there, and went to sit with her, and we talked for a little while. Again, she had an ethereal air, and seemed content. I have friends whose spiritual beliefs would suggest that such dreams mean I have travelled to the spirit world to visit her. I like that explanation, although of course that doesn't make it true.

Increasingly, as I know understand life to be something punctured by the death, I see that our relation to the ghostly can become more and more intimate, as we are deposed from the armchair explorer whose curiosity and wonder can be put to one side. There are plenty of hauntings to explore like that, tantalising and numinous, wraiths and bogles and ladies in white who hover in and out of the everyday leaving questions and awe in their midst. But there are hauntings that become interwoven so tightly into our inner worlds, that we can not walk on past and leave them behind. L's house, in my mind, is as it was in the late 80s and 90s, and she and her family during this time will be its first, its last and its only occupiers. It won't age, though its clarity may fade, and I choose to go there, just from time to time, because though this all happened many years ago, it happened, and I remember.

Trump Administration Vows to Crack Down on Pot, Enthusiastically Embraces Other Failed Criminal Justice Policies
The Hill reports:
White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Thursday suggested the Trump administration will step up enforcement of federal laws against recreational marijuana.
“I do believe that you’ll see greater enforcement,” Spicer said, while adding the exact policy is “a question for the Department of Justice.”
It’s the latest sign President Trump is poised to take a tougher approach than the
Attorney General Jeff Sessions
Obama Justice Department did in states that have legalized the use of recreational marijuana.
...
Spicer telegraphed the administration won’t take a get-tough approach against medical marijuana, saying Trump believes in its ability to "comfort" people suffering from debilitating diseases.
But he said he takes a different view of recreational marijuana, linking it to the abuse of opioid drugs in states across the U.S.
There is little evidence showing a link between abuse of the two drugs. Some researchers believe medical marijuana could help reduce demand for opioid-based painkillers.
Eight states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for recreational use. Twenty others have laws allowing medical marijuana.
If revival of the failed War on Drugs (at least against marijuana) was not enough, Trump's administration appears ready to enthusiastically embrace other 1980s era criminal justice failures.  Trump has already signaled support for civil forfeiture, which has a well documented history of abuse.  His administration also appears ready to end the Obama-era moratorium on the feds renewing contracts for the use of private prisons, another enormous policy failure.  Is federal sentencing reform out the window as well?  Could be as Attorney General Jeff Sessions worked to block sentencing reform while in the U.S. Senate, despite widespread bipartisan support.
The sad thing was that pre-Trump the GOP was moving in the right direction on all these issues.  Reform though seems endangered by a "law and order" Republican President who seems oblivious to the failed history of the policies his administration supports.

NUVO Crystal Drops. (maybe my new favourite product)
I LOVE this new product from Tonic !!! NUVO Crystal Drops.
I sat down this afternoon to try them ... and fell in love ! I really like those glossy enamel dots that can be adhered to projects but they are SO expensive !! Usually $6.99 or more for a card with 2 or 3 dozen . Yikes ! So this product WILL MAKE THOSE DOTS !! And it is only $3.99 bottle !
Here's a quick video tutorial ... so many ways to use this great product !! And then scroll through the photos to see the quick samples I made.
Great video demonstration ... lots of ways to use them !!
 There are 44 (delicious !) colours ...

That is some of them. There are still a few on backorder, shipping next week.
There are 3 types ... glittery, glossy, and metalic/pearly.
They sell for just $3.99 a bottle ... that is a lot of drops for just a few bucks !
One fluid ounce per bottle.
And, the bottle is nice and soft - easy to squeeze !

They look like an extra large bottle of nail polish ...

... with a beautiful crystal topper !
You can use this product several ways ... directly on a project is one way. That always makes me nervous, lol, so I prefer making the dots ahead of time and applying them to my finished project. No worries about smudging !
To make dots ahead of time, you need a craft sheet or a piece of release paper from tape. A non stick surface basically. Then you just squeeze out the product. I did this ... they looked like little chocolate chips with that little tail on top. By the time I had made one small row, they were all beautifully domed and perfect ! The product is self leveling so it smooths itself out. It is amazing.

Now, I will leave these overnight and then slide them off the craft sheet and into a container. To apply them I can use glue or just a dab of the same NUVO product they are made of. Too easy !
Look how perfectly they turned out ... and all I did was squeeze !

So, if you are interested in any, send me an email !

          Isdaan Floating Restaurant, Calauan Laguna

Four months ago, we visited  Isdaan Restaurant in Tarlac  and we really had a wonderful time so we decided to check out the Laguna branch. It was Sunday and the restaurant was jam packed with people. We arrived at exactly lunch time so we had to wait  about 20 minutes in order for us to be seated. The bamboo cotttage that was provided to us was quite small for the 12 of us. Service was slow but the staffs kept apologizing. Most of our orders were not available so we just replaced them with the 3 same viands that we had last time at the other branch.  Not having most of our orders was  such a disappointment! With the flock of people coming to the restaurant they should have everything available or they should  update their menu.
When I first set foot in this restaurant ( Tarlac branch ), I was wondering why they added statues of Incredible Hulk, Batman, Iron man and the likes. They look out of place with all those giant buddha statues around the restaurant. But after seeing my nieces screaming in excitement when they saw the angry birds and their favorite Disney characters, it made me realize that Isdaan has no definite theme but it  was designed  to attract people of all ages specially the kids. There are lots of fun activities for the kids. They can go biking, enjoy the plastic play structures such as slides, swing sets and see saws, have their faces painted, watch magic shows and acrobatic shows, go boating etc. We thouroughly enjoyed the surroundings and I loved the overall design concept of the restaurant compared to the Tarlac branch but the place seemed to be congested, or maybe we came at the wrong time.
Food Verdict: Some were good, some were ok, some so so but I recommend marinated grilled spareribs and kinalabasang hipon! I loved the fruit juices! We shouldn't have ordered the mango and melon sago. They were just like the fruit juices with sago pearls and we ordered 7 glasses! uggh! The Tarlac version was more icy! There is no free drinking water! You have to buy bottled water!  another uggh! Isdaan Tarlac offers free drinking water! hmmmp! Anyway, despite my negative comments, you may still want to pay Isdaan Laguna a visit after you see these pictures (specially the photo enthusiasts!) heehee!

                              Mall Madness.
                    lsdkfj

Same day we had the movie fail---we headed over to the mall in my mom's town. Eliette hit Claire's for the first time.

                    Oh my.
Seriously, about a billion pics are to follow because this pacifier princess was in a girly-whirl of Heaven.

                     "I wear all the necklaces."

In this next picture, right behind her---that's her little basket of treasures.
                     Pigtail headband for the hair-challenged....

"Oooooh, Minions! Don't mind if I do...."

She wanted ALL of the little compacts....

                              Mini Acoustic Guitars
Ever since the origins of the modern guitar in the 18th century, the instrument has been available in various sizes. Antonio d Torres gave the modern classical guitar its form as we know it today. The modern classical guitar has a scale of 648 to 650 mm, which is roughly 26 inches. Full size electric guitars have a slightly shorter scale. Most Fender instruments are 25 1/2” while Gibson has maintained the 24 1/2” scale.

                    Sizes of Classical Guitars

Classic guitar builders have offered guitars that are 1/4 sized, 1/2 sized, 3/4 sized, and full size for players of different ages and differing physiques.

                    1830 Stauffer Terz

In the 1930’s C.F. Martin introduced the Terz guitar. It was based on the size of the Terz or Treble classical guitar. Joseph Stauffer, from whom C.F. Martin senior learned his craft, had built Terz guitars. So it would stand to reason Martin would continue the tradition.

                    Martin 5-18 Terz Guitar

The Martin Terz was a 3/4 scale guitar and offered in different styles. The 5-18 was probably the most popular. Marty Robbins used his on stage. This guitar was designed to be tuned three frets above standard pitch.

                    1937 Gibson L-00

In 1932 Gibson introduce the L-00 Flat top guitar. This was a small bodied instrument, and one of the nicer versions of the L series. By 1937, Gibson offered this model in a 3/4 sized option.

                    1950 Gibson LG-2 3/4 size

In 1933 Gibson had also introduced the very fancy LC model in a 3/4 sized version. In 1942 Gibson offered the LG-2 and by 1949 it was available in a 3/4 size version. This is the guitar that Arlo Guthrie favors.

                    Arlo Guthrie LG-2

In 2002 Gibson decided to reintroduce this very model when Arlo Guthrie contacted Gibson’s craftsmen to ask for help In reconstructing a guitar that his father Woody had given him as a present. After painstakingly rebuilding the instrument, Gibson decided to offer the same guitar to the public as the Arlo Guthrie LG-2 3/4. This list price was $2079, but they are available for much less.

Back in 1945, following the World War II, Harmony guitars of Chicago was back in business and reintroduced The Stella guitar. Stella had been a brand offered as far back as 1899 by the Oscar Schmidt Company. When the company went bankrupt in the 1930’s, Harmony guitars stepped in a acquired their assets.

                    Harmony "Stella"  H929

The 3/4 sized Stella H929 was in the line up from 1945 through 1970 and was popular as a student model. The guitar was made mainly from birch and used all solid woods. It was ladder braced. Despite being 3/4 sized, it still had a 24 1/2” scale.

Bob Taylor working on a guitar
Bob Taylor was working for a small guitar manufacturing business in 1972 when he was only 18 years old. Within two years, Bob, and co-workers Kurt Listig, and Steve Schemmer bought the company. They needed a band name to put on the guitars.

Schemmer Guitars and Listig Guitar did not seem to sound as marketable as Taylor Guitars. So Taylor Guitar it was. None of the men had studied Martin’s guitar making techniques, so their ideas were fresh and had a new approach. By 1983 Taylor and Listig bought out Schemmer’s stake in the company.

1996 Baby Taylor (Baby on head stock)

Back in 1996, at a time when most of us were interesting only in dreadnought sized guitars,  the Baby Taylor made its debut and starts a new trend in guitar manufacturing.

                    Baby Taylor neck
Taylor Guitars had already come up with an interesting concept in its bolt-on neck, which utilized precision cut spacers and bolts to attach the neck to the guitars body, which made neck adjustments quick and painless and this same process was applied to the Baby Taylor.

The instruments heelless neck attaches to the guitars body by means of two screws that are flush with the fretboard and located between the 15th and 16th fret.

                    Baby Taylor arched back
The guitars back and sides are made of 3 layers of laminated sapele wood and the instruments back is slightly arched. Other guitar companies, such as Guild, Framus, and Gibson, have used this same method of arching the back through heated pressing for strength, so the back requires no internal back bracing.

The guitars top is made of solid Sitka spruce. Black matte veneer covers the headstock that bears the decal with the Taylor logo.

The guitar comes with its own gig bag.

                    Taylor Swift Baby Taylor

The Baby Taylor has a 22 3/4” scale on its diminutive 15 3/4” by 12 1/2” body. The guitar was an instant hit and notice was taken by many other guitar manufacturers. The first year offered the Baby Taylor sold over 1,000 units. Sales of the tiny guitar increased from there.

Martin guitars offered the Backpacker around 1993. Chris Martin IV had visited luthier Robert McNally’s booth at the 1993 NAMM convention where the luthier was displaying his 3 string Strumstick.

                    Bob McNally with a Strumstick
The original instrument was based on the mountain lap dulcimer, but was meant to be played like a guitar. A deal was struck up at this show for 5,000 units to be made. The neck was changed to a six string guitar design and it was dubbed The Backpacker.

                    1995 Martin Backpacker

Although the guitar did not have the greatest tone or volume, its compact size, and durability made it successful. The Backpacker was even taken into outer space by one of the astronauts.

                    Martin 5-15 & Backpacker

The design changed in 2002 when the instruments body was enlarged to enhance the tone and make the instrument easier to hold. Martin has also offered this same instrument with nylon strings, and a mandolin, and ukulele version.

                    Martin LXM
In 2003 Martin took the concept of a small guitar a step further a with the introduction of the Martin LXM. The LXM or Little Martin is designed as a modified 0-14 fret tenor Martin shape. The scale is 23’ in length. The entire guitar is constructed of high-pressure-laminate or HPL, which is essentially the same process used for making Formica. The neck on the Little Martin is made of Rust birch laminate. The fretboard is constructed of black Micarta, while the nut is made of white Corian. The saddle is made of white Tusq. The tuners are made by Gotoh.

                    Martin LXME

The original version was only offered as an acoustic instrument. Later on the LXME came with Fishman transducers and Mini Q electronics. The LXM models all come with a gig bag.

                    Martin LX1

The Martin LX1 is the same style of guitar, but it has a solid Sitka spruce top.

                    LX1E Ed Sheeran model

Ed Sheeran began his busking career using a Little Martin and Martin guitars offers the Ed Sheeran X signature series LX size guitar with built-in Fishman Isys T electronics.

                    Martin LX1e

Martin also makes the LX1e electric acoustic models, which feature a solid spruce top.

                    2013 Taylor GS Mini
In July of 2013 Taylor Guitars introduced the GS Mini guitar. After experimenting with changes to the Baby Taylor, a new design, the Grand Symphony, was decided on. The GS has a different body shape and different bracing.

The top is made of solid Sitka spruce and the back and sides are sapele laminate. The body is approximately 2” larger than the Baby Taylor. The scale is 23 1/2”, and the body is an inch deeper than the Baby Taylor. Once again, it features the arched back design.

                    Taylor GS Mini E

The neck on this model, although a bolt-on featuring Taylor’s NT design, does have a heel. The action is low and feels quite good. The original models were only offered as acoustic guitars, but could be equipped with the optional ES-Go acoustic pickup.

                    ES-Go Pickup System

This unit is built exclusively for the GS Mini guitar. The ES-Go is stacked humbucking magnetic pickup which clips onto a bracket in the sound hole that is underneath the fretboard section. Once in place, the player swaps out the end pin and replace it with the one attached to the ES-Go unit. It is made to be paired with Taylor’s “V” cable, which has a volume control. The unit sells for an additional $100.

                    Taylor GS Mini Mahogany-Spruce

Since its inception, Taylor has improved this guitar, by offering it with optional body woods, such as a mahogany top or spruce top with laminated walnut back and sides. The electronics have also been updated.

                    2015 Taylor GS Mini E
The Taylor GS mini e is now is available with a built-in Taylor Expression System 2 electronics, which places 3 pickup sensors behind the guitars bridge. Taylor feels this is superior to under the under the saddle method that many designers have used. This also comes with a built-in preamp.

This option adds $100 to the guitars price, but eliminates the need for putting on or removing the ES-Go unit.

Back in 1997, just a year after Bob Taylor introduced the Baby Taylor, Tacoma Guitars of Seattle Washington introduced The Papoose mini guitar.

The Tacoma Factory - Frets magazine
Tacoma Guitars was a division of The Tacoma Lumber Company.  In 1991 this company was processing hardwood that was milled into piano soundboards exclusively for the Young Chang Piano Company of South Korea.

The lumber company's general manager, J.C. Kim persuaded Young Change to build a guitar manufacturing plant nearby, and the company started turning out some rather unique instruments. Among these was the tiny P1 Papoose guitar that was designed by luthier Terry Atkins and George Gruhn.

                    1997 Tacoma Papoose

The Tacoma P1 Papoose had a short scale neck with only a 19.1” scale, and  it was built to be tuned a fourth higher that normal guitar tuning. In other words, the strings were tuned from A to A.

                    Paisley Soundhole on Papoose
This guitar introduced the Paisley sound hole, which became a Tacoma trademark, and the Voiced Bracing Support system. This was a system designed to minimize the bracing as much as possible down to what the instrument needs to remain stable.

                    Back of 1997 Papoose

The heelless neck on the Papoose was bolted on and secured by two screws. The bridge was uniquely shaped and had 3 unusual C-shaped cut-outs to secure the strings. Some later models came with bridge pins.

                    Papoose 12 String
The Papoose was available in a variety of sound board woods. Tacoma also came out with the P112 Papoose 12 string. Towards the end of the line, Tacoma had introduced and electric version of The Papoose.

Young Chang put the company up for sale in 1999 and it was sold to Fender Musical Instruments Corporation in 2004.

Sadly in 2008 Fender closed the plant and laid off the staff. Though the Papoose is no longer produced, it can still be found on auction sites at a fairly reasonable rate.

Since the Baby Taylor and the Little Martin have proved to be successful, many major guitar manufacturers, too numerous to mention, have developed and offer 3/4 sized mini acoustic guitars in their line up.

                    Dean Flight

Among them Dean Guitars offers the Dean Flight that retails for around $150 USD. It is a laminated guitar with a 22” scale. The neck is mahogany, and the headstock is done in the Dean-wing style. It comes with a gig bag.

                    Fender MA-1
Fender offers the MA-1 Parlor 3/4 size guitar. The top is laminated Agathis and the back and sides are laminated Sapele. As with most of the mini acoustic guitars a gig bag is included.

                    Yamaha JR1

Yamaha’s product is the JR1 Mini Folk.

                    Luna Safari

Luna Guitars offers a similar 3/4 sized guitar called the Muse Safari guitar.

                    Takamine GX18CE-NS

Takamine has the GX18CE-NS, which retails around $400, but it does have a solid spruce top, rosewood fretboard and electronics with a built-in preamp.

                    KLOS Mini guitar

One of the more unique mini guitars comes from a company called Klos. Their instrument has a carbon fiber body. The neck is made of mahogany and topped with a rosewood fretboard.

                    KLOS Mini guitar
Despite being small in size, the scale is 24 3/4”. Plus the neck is removable. It comes with a gig bag and sell direct from the manufacturer for around $600 USD.

The Rise of the Instagram Brands

As time goes on, I fall in love with Instagram more and more. Our love affair was pretty touch and go after last year’s much publicised algorithm change – truth be told it’s still a sore point so let’s just skip past that. As with any romance, it’s had it’s ups and downs, but on the whole we’re pretty solid.

We’ve been through a lot together over the years. I guess I could be described as an early adopter of social media platforms. I’ve been on both Twitter and Instagram since their infancy, when putting up a post resulted in a bale of tumbleweed just rolling past. It’s all change now, with millions of users fretting over their Instagram strategy and resulting engagement levels, especially after that algorithm update. I’ll let it go one day…!

Instagram has evolved into the one form of social media that really matters. Facebook and Twitter are relatively neglected now while influencers, brands and everyday users pour their time and energy into creating the perfectly curated feed. And it’s paying off.

Instagram has democratised fashion somewhat. There’s a growing appetite for accessible fashion seen on real girls, not statuesque models airbrushed to within an inch of their lives. It’s has given birth to dozens of influencers, you don’t even need a blog now as long as you have a great photographer and a strong following, that’s enough. The same goes for models, their Instagram following is almost as important as their book – just look at the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid.

Personally, I love seeing girls of all sizes and nationalities on my feed and discovering what their wearing and how their doing their make up. Instagram is where you go for inspiration. Glossy editorials are becoming less of a reference point and much less important to consumers.

I’ve also discovered dozens of brands really harnessing the power of Instagram to break through the saturated fashion industry. Fledgling Turkish handbag brand Manu Atelier became an overnight success after Eva Chen, Head of Fashion Partnerships at Instagram, featured one of their bags on her feed. With price points hovering around £400-500 it’s an attainable price point compared to the likes of Givenchy and Chanel, but the brands really flourishing on Instagram are the lower price point fast-fashion brands.

While fast-fashion veterans Missguided and Boohoo paced the way for daily website updates and unbelievably low price points, there are plenty of new kids on the block snapping at their heels. The likes of Miss Pap, Missy Empire and Lasula are pretty hard to miss on Instagram. They came to my attention when I literally couldn’t scroll through my feed without seeing an influencer wearing something super cute and covetable by one of those brands. My interest was piqued so I gave each a follow and in the following weeks, I’ve placed orders – solely due to the power of Instagram. That’s pretty incredible.

All three brands that I highlighted are very similar in terms of attitude (fierce AF) and products – I’ve seen lots of nearly identical pieces on each site. The vibe is actually very similar to the early days of ASOS, when it was known as As Seen On Screen. It’s fun, full of attitude fast fashion which is influenced by celebrities. All three are great at harnessing the power of bloggers to amplify their brand and have an ‘Insta Shop’ where you can find products featured on influencers and their feed.

As with life, it’s not all sunshine and roses. The ethics around fast fashion are highly questionable. Price points are super accessible, but someone has to pay. Often this is the expense of garment workers, who work in appalling factory conditions for pittance. The fashion industry was aghast after the Rana Plaza factory complex in Bangladesh collapsed killing over 1,000 factory workers and maiming many more. Despite pledging to improve conditions, little has changed in the last three years – this article on The Guardian goes into more depth on the issue.

There are also huge differences between the service you expect and receive. More established retailers like ASOS have extremely streamlined logistics, sometimes it feels like my orders are catapulted to my door they’re so fast and returns are super simple and quick. I’ve had issues with shipping with some of these brands, I placed an order for Miss Pap before Paris Fashion Week only to not receive my order in time despite paying for next day delivery. Returns are also an issue. Returns are an inevitable part of running an online business and most brands allow 30 days to return goods. However, most of these brands only allow 14 days for a refund so watch out!

On the whole, I love discovering new brands through Instagram and welcome the diversity. Have you discovered new brands through Instagram or social media?

                              Outfit Post: Missing Sibling

London is the best city in the world for discovering emerging designers. I’ve said this statement so many times I feel like a parrot but I stand by it. The city is home to some of the best fashion schools in the world and there are tons of initiatives to help fledgling designers, from the Topshop-sponsored NEWGEN initiative to the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Fund. The city is set up to spot and nurture young talent. Fashion East’s Lulu Kennedy has launched the careers of Roksanda, J.W. Anderson and Gareth Pugh among others while the late Louise Wilson mentored the likes of Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane during her tenure at Saint Martin’s.

Over the years, I’ve discovered some incredibly talented designers during London Fashion Week, including Carli Cohen and Teatum Jones. But equally, I’ve sadly seen a number of names drop off the schedule or go on haitus. I still think of Kinder Aggugini who last showed back in 2012 and of course, there’s still a huge Meadham Kirchhoff shaped hole in the show schedule after the label shut nearly two years ago.

Just last month, it was announced that knitwear brand Sibling was going on haitus. Bold, brash and unashamedly London, the brand was founded by Sid Bryan, Cozette McCreery and the late Joe Bates back in 2008. Since then it’s become a favourite of the style set, who fell head over heels for their joyful knits. I was shocked and saddened to hear that the brand was going on haitus but I remain hopeful for a return.

This jumper is from Sibling’s AW12 collection, which was inspired by the movie Paris, Texas. It features black wool flecked with silver and a sweet but subversive bejewelled Mickey Mouse skull in hot pink. I adore this jumper and a pink mohair dress that I picked up from the same collection. They are the embodiment of the Sibling brand, showing that knitwear can be fun, frivolous and fierce. The rest of my outfit, by contrast, is very plain as my jumper makes quite the statement. I added another pop of colour with my super fun furry clutch by London-based faux fur company Shrimps.

                    Skirt – 5CM
                    Boots – Isabel Marant

Michael Douglas cancer caused by HPV

The major traditional risk factors for throat cancer are excessive consumption of alcohol and snuff. But in recent years, it was discovered that some cancers of the throat can be caused by HPV, which can be spread through oral sex. This type of cancer is called throat cancer HPV-positive.

To determine if the cancer patient's throat is caused by HPV, doctors study the genetic signature of the tumor. On the other hand, patients with HPV-positive tumors have shown a better response to treatment and increased survival rate in clinical studies.

Although HPV is becoming the main risk factor for throat cancer, and is the cause of 70 percent of throat cancers in the United States, smoking, drinking and having a weakened immune system are still risk factors important for the development of cancer.

According to investigators, the rate of HPV-positive throat cancer is increasing, while the number of those caused by other factors such as smoking is decreasing.

So, although it seems likely, from what he said that throat cancer Michael Douglas has been considered as HPV-positive, it is difficult to know if your smoking and heavy alcohol consumption have contributed to the development of this cancer.

HPV belongs to a group of more than 150 sexually transmitted virus. Some of them are low-risk HPV simply produce warts on the skin. About a dozen HPV, mainly HPV types 16 and 18, have been identified as high risk of causing cancer.

While there is currently no sure way to prevent throat cancer caused by HPV, the U.S. is being recommended vaccination for boys and girls.
