Sebastian Dröge: Writing GStreamer Elements in Rust (Part 4): Logging, COWs and Plugins

This is part 4, the older parts can be found here: part 1, part 2 and part 3

It’s been quite a while since the last update again, so I thought I should write about the biggest changes since last time again even if they’re mostly refactoring. They nonetheless show how Rust is a good match for writing GStreamer plugins.

Apart from actual code changes, also the code was relicensed from the LGPL-2 to a dual MIT-X11/Apache2 license to make everybody’s life a bit easier with regard to static linking and building new GStreamer plugins on top of this.

I’ll also speak about all this and more at RustFest.EU 2017 in Kiev on the 30th of April, together with Luis.

The next steps after all this will be to finally make the FLV demuxer feature-complete, for which all the base-work is already done now.

Logging

One thing that was missing so far and made debugging problems always a bit annoying was the missing integration with the GStreamer logging infrastructure. Adding println!() everywhere just to remove them again later gets boring after a while.

The GStreamer logging infrastructure is based, like many other solutions, on categories in which you log your messages and levels that describe the importance of the message (error, warning, info, …). Logging can be disabled at compile time, up to a specific level, and can also be enabled/disabled at runtime for each category to a specific level, and performance impact for disabled logging should be close to zero. This now has to be mapped somehow to Rust.

During last year’s “24 days of Rust” in December, slog was introduced (see this also for some overview how slog is used). And it seems like the perfect match here due to being able to implement new “output backends”, called a Drain in slog and very low performance impact. So how logging works now is that you create a Drain per GStreamer debug category (which will then create the category if needed), and all logging to that Drain goes directly to GStreamer:

// The None parameter is a GStreamer Element, which allows the logging system to
// print the element name and other things on the GStreamer side
// The 0 is for defining a color for the logging in that category
let logger = Logger::root(GstDebugDrain::new(None,
                                             "mycategory",
                                             0,
                                             "Some description"),
                                             None);
debug!(logger, "Some output with a number {}", 1);

With lazy_static we can then make sure that the Drain is only created once and can be used from multiple places.

All the implementation for the Drain can be found here, and it’s all rather straightforward plumbing. The interesting part here however is that slog makes sure that the message string and all its formatting arguments (the integer in the above example) are passed down to the Drain without doing any formatting. As such we can skip the whole formatting step if the category is not enabled or its level is too low, which gives us almost zero-cost logging for the cases when it is disabled. And of course slog also allows disabling logging up to a specific level at compile time via cargo’s features feature, making it really zero-cost if disabled at compile time.

Safe & simple Copy-On-Write

In GStreamer, buffers and similar objects are inheriting from a base class called GstMiniObject. This base class provides infrastructure for reference counting, copying (cloning) of the objects and a dynamic (at runtime, not to be confused with Rust’s COW type) Copy-On-Write mechanism (writable access requires a reference count of 1, or a copy has to be made). This is very similar to Rust’s Arc, which for a contained type that implements Clone provides the make_mut() and get_mut() functions that work the same way.

Now we can’t unfortunately use Arc directly here for wrapping the GStreamer types, as the reference counting is already done inside GStreamer and adding a second layer of reference counting on top is not going to make things work better. So there’s now a GstRc, which provides more or less the same API as Arc and wraps structs that implement the GstMiniObject trait. The latter provides GstRc functions for getting the raw pointer, swap the raw pointer and create new instances from a raw pointer. The actual structs for buffers and other types don’t do any reference counting or otherwise instance handling, and only have unsafe constructors. The general idea here is that they will never exist outside a GstRc, which will then can provide you with (mutable or not) references to them.

With all this we now have a way to let Rust do the reference counting for us and enforce the writability rules of the GStreamer API automatically without leaving any chance of doing things wrong. Compared to C where you have to do the reference counting yourself and could accidentally try to modify a non-writable (reference count > 1) object (which would give an assertion), this is a big improvement.

And as a bonus this is all completely without overhead: all that is passed around in the Rust code is (once compiled) the raw C pointer of the objects, and the functions calls directly map to the C functions too. Let’s take an example:

// This gives a GstRc
let mut buffer = Buffer::new_from_vec(vec![1, 2, 3, 4]).unwrap();

{ // A new block to keep the &mut Buffer scope (and mut borrow) small
// This would fail (return None) if the buffer was not writable
  let buffer_ref = buffer.get_mut().unwrap();
  buffer_ref.set_pts(Some(1));
}

// After this the reference count will be 2
let mut buffer_copy = buffer.clone();

{
// buffer.get_mut() would return None, the below creates a copy
// of the buffer instead, which makes it writable again
  let buffer_copy_ref = buffer.make_mut().unwrap();
  buffer_copy_ref.set_pts(Some(2));
}

// Access to Buffer functions that only require a &mut Buffer can
// be done directly thanks to the Deref trait
assert_ne!(buffer.get_pts(), buffer_copy.get_pts());

After reading this code you might ask why DerefMut is not implemented in addition, which would then do make_mut() internally if needed and would allow getting around the extra method call. The reason for this is that make_mut() might do a (expensive!) copy, and as such DerefMut could do a copy implicitly without the code having any explicit indication that a copy might happen here. I would be worried that it could cause non-obvious performance problems.

The last change I’m going to write about today is that the repository was completely re-organized. There is now a base crate and separate plugin crates (e.g. gst-plugin-file). The former is a normal library crate and contains some C code and all the glue between GStreamer and Rust, the latter don’t contain a single line of C code (and no unsafe code either at this point) and compile to a standalone GStreamer plugin.

The only tricky bit here was generating the plugin entry point from pure Rust code. GStreamer requires a plugin to export a symbol with a specific name, which provides access to a description struct. As the struct also contains strings, and generating const static strings with ‘\0’ terminator is not too easy, this is still a bit ugly currently. With the upcoming changes in GStreamer 1.14 this will become better, as we can then just export a function that can dynamically allocate the strings and return the struct from there.

All the boilerplate for creating the plugin entry point is hidden by the plugin_define!() macro, which can then be used as follows (and you’ll understand what I mean with ugly ‘\0’ terminated strings then):

plugin_define!(b"rsfile\0",
               b"Rust File Plugin\0",
               plugin_init,
               b"1.0\0",
               b"MIT/X11\0",
               b"rsfile\0",
               b"rsfile\0",
               b"https://github.com/sdroege/rsplugin\0",
               b"2016-12-08\0");

As a side-note, handling multiple crates next to each other is very convenient with the workspace feature of cargo and the “build –all”, “doc –all” and “test –all” commands since 1.16.

          Updated Wiki: JobManager

Job Manager

Use this component to run sharepoint jobs from central administration or change a job schedule.
For instance:
  • You can run a full profile synchronization without needing stsadm
  • Jobs installed with a feature receiver can be changed, without having to change and re-deploy
  • When developing new jobs, you can run them on demand, rather than using a minute schedule (which may not be ideal)

Installation

Run the commands to install and deploy as needed. Or use central admin to deploy. The final command will generate correct navigation after the solution has been deployed.

cd "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\"
stsadm.exe -o addsolution -filename components2.jobmanager.wsp
stsadm.exe -o deploysolution -name components2.jobmanager.wsp -local -allowgacdeployment
stsadm.exe -o copyappbincontent

Configuration

This component can be found in the operations section of central administration

operations.jpg

The job list screen is that same as the normal job definition list screen

list.jpg

From the main screen you can perform these actions:

1. Change a job's schedule
2. Execute a job
3. Clone a job for one time execution
4. Clone a job for normal execution

If the job has a schedule, you can change all the properties based on the type.
Click OK to save the new schedule.

If you wish to call the execute method on the job, select a content database from the dropdown
Then click Execute.
This calls the Execute method on the SPJobDefinition
This does not update the last run date of the job.

The last two buttons, clone schedule and clone one-time, copy the job into a new definition, with the same details
The reason i chose to implement a job clone, was because i didnt want to change the original job.
Normally one time jobs can not be changed to scheduled and visa versa. This is a sharepoint limitation.
Cloning will show the job in the standard job definition lists, with (clone) in the title
These can be deleted from the main screen.
Cloned One-time schedule jobs will be run ASAP.

          There are no goodbyes
The following is my religion column for the Friday, June 18, 2010 issue of the Tribune & Georgia.

When my wife, Victoria, and I hiked the Appalachian Trail, we enjoyed a lot of single-serving friendships. As we were hiking north for six months, we often ran into someone hiking south. We would sometimes just nod and keep walking, but more typically a brief conversation would ensue. And in these brief snippets we would often just learn the basics of who someone was, where they were coming from and how far they were going.

We did use these short meetings to find out about folks further up ahead and to share news of others we had passed along the way. Then one such single serving friendship was transformative. A hiker I will never forget, whose name we never heard appeared out of a dense fog one morning to say that he decided that these brief exchanges didn’t have to start at the beginning “Hi, I’m Frank and this is my wife, Victoria.” Instead, we could begin in the middle. Then without a name or other introduction, he shared how the morning was more science fiction than trail fact and people just appeared from the fog as if transported from no where. With that, he vanished into that same fog and we learned to take conversations further, faster if we wanted to really benefit from our short-lived exchanges in days full of hiking. That briefest of conversations left us changed for the better.

This is my farewell column for the Tribune and Georgian and as such, the last brief conversation we will have through this newspaper. I am thankful for you, gentle readers. Many of you have been with me for the more than 200 columns I have written. We have been through a lot together since my first column “How much sin is too much to forgive?” debuted in this space on June 22, 2001 to wonder aloud about American terrorist Timothy McVeigh’s last minute confession.

Since then, the worldwide tragedy of September 11 and smaller, closer to home grief of dealing with the paper mill closing and taking with it hundreds of jobs as well as the many other events large and small have taken up our thoughts and been in our prayers. We have considered cloning, stem cell research, just war theory and the ethics of torture alongside forgiveness, stewardship and how to live more fully into the faith that is in us.

Writing a column can be a one-sided affair, with me off writing in my little office in my home in Sugarmill and y’all reading wherever you make time for the paper. There is no reason that the writing and the reading need intersect. But it has never worked that way in Camden County. I have often been stopped at Publix or WalMart or Blockbuster to continue a conversation begun in this column. Many readers have shared with me favorite thoughts, including the columns that were hung on the refrigerator or laminated. I have also enjoyed it when someone emailed to let me know how the follow-up discussion went in a Bible Study at their church.

Rather than a column in which I write and you read, the column evolved into something more like a conversation. The word conversation comes from Latin root, which literally means “to turn about with.” The same root gives us “conversion.” Real conversation is a genuine back and forth in which those conversing change direction together. I thank you for being conversation partners with me and for the ways you have helped me to change direction over time. I hope that even if you haven’t agreed with me, that you were given pause to think about your own beliefs.

In this idea of conversion through conversation, we see that it has not just been a conversation between writer and reader, but the Holy Spirit has been in the conversation as well. For my words alone do not have the power of conversion unless God uses my words to get one’s attention and then do something with them beyond the ability of words alone.

This is just like what happens in a sermon. Each week, more than 100 pastors prayerfully consider how to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those in the pews in Camden County. Certainly the God-given skill of the preacher comes into play. But even more important is what God does with the words as they are spoken.

I have never spoken to a pastor about preaching who has not been able to tell of a time when someone referred to something not said outright in the sermon, which proved significant to the hearer. What is heard is not identical with what is preached and thanks be to God that this is so. The rest of what happens in sermon (and the most important part) is what the Holy Spirit does in the heart of the hearer. And so it is with the readers touched by something they read from me in this space.

Now this conversation comes to an end. I begin work July 1 as Canon for Congregational Ministries of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. That mouthful of words means that I will share with our bishop in the task of tending the clergy and congregations of south Georgia. I feel called by God to this vocation. Yet every call to something is a call away from something else. In part, it is a call away from this conversation carried on through the newspaper. Someone new will take over this column, just as I took up where Bob Moon left off. The conversation continues with a new person writing alongside my conversation partner Donna Grice.

But this is not goodbye. There is no such thing as goodbye in the Kingdom of God, in the sense of a final parting. For as the faith we have is not in vain, we will see one another again, if not on earth, then in heaven. It is only farewell we say, or ta ta for now. For if the words I have written have been used by God to good effect, then we will be together again.

(The Rev. Frank Logue was the founding pastor of King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland, serving that congregation from its beginning in 2000 until this past Sunday.)

Who would be interested in testing VirtEngine On-premise?

Hey LET,

We've been patching bugs and adding lots of amazing features this year. - Our platform is still 'late beta' and most if not all of the serious bugs have been eliminated.

We'd love to get some testing done by the community in order to find the last bugs that may affect production or user experience and also suggest new features that we may have missed to implement.

We're looking for providers whom are interested in switching their current platform in the future (or new companies looking to offer cloud services), and would like to seriously test our platform to see if it is viable alternative for them.

Our team will install all the components required, our minimum system requirements must be met (1 Hypervisor Node, and 1 Master VM)

Some of our latest features that we have added include:

  • Cloning VM's through using our backup functionality, by taking a backup and launching it.
  • Downloading backups locally, and uploading backups to the system.
  • Attaching additional networks (IP's to your VM)
  • Snapshot functionality - Snapshot is different to backups that it only stores the Operating Systems state (network configuration files, etc.)
  • Adding users manually from the admin portal.
  • Added various control panel one-click applications such as VestaCP, Webmin, ISPConfig

All of the functionality currently supported has been tested on KVM, however we have not conducted testing on Xen or LXC - if you'd like to test Xen that'll be great for us so we can make sure all the functionality works on that too.

If you're interested - feel free to reply to this thread, or contact us directly @ hello@virtengine.com

Thanks, Jonathan P

Constraints on Cosmology and Quantum Gravity from Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory

by: Pollack, Jason Aaron (Caltech)

Abstract:
Typical cosmological states have structure, obey to very good approximation the laws of classical physics on large scales, and are far from equilibrium. Typical quantum-mechanical states have none of these properties. If the universe is described by a state in a Hilbert space, the state and its Hilbert space must therefore obey a number of constraints to describe realistic cosmological spacetimes. In particular, they must admit a quantum-to-classical transition via decoherence that allows for the emergence of classical spacetimes, and such spacetimes must obey gravitational constraints, in particular on the entanglement entropy of subsystems within them. The papers collected in this thesis are concerned with these constraints. We investigate two holographic correspondences inspired by AdS/CFT, the AdS-MERA correspondence, which suggests that anti-de~Sitter space may be given a discretized description as a tensor network, and the ER=EPR duality, which identified entangled qubits with wormholes connecting them. In the former case, we use holographic entropy bounds to severely constrain the properties of any such tensor network; in the latter case we prove a new general-relativistic area theorem which states that an area corresponding to the entanglement entropy in wormhole geometries is exactly conserved. We use information-theoretic constraints to show that under mild assumptions about the black hole interior an observer falling beyond the horizon is unable to verify the claimed cloning of information in the firewall paradox before reaching the singularity. Finally, we analyze the decoherence structures of late-time de~Sitter space and early-time slow-roll eternal inflation. We show that in the former case a universe with an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and a positive cosmological constant inevitably reaches a maximum-entropy state from which no further branching or decoherence is possible, forbidding the existence of dynamical quantum fluctuations at late time. In the latter case, gravitational-strength interaction among inflaton modes leads to decoherence of sufficiently super-Hubble modes, which we argue backreacts to cause different histories of cosmological evolution on different branches and hence creates the conditions necessary for eternal inflation.

【 MEIZU M8】 market analysis forecast

A few days ago, wrote an article on the news MEIZU M8】 【MEIZU M8 technology can not keep up the market to combat the typical case, today carried out in response to MEIZU M8 about analysis and forecast of MEIZU M8. First, from Baidu, the Baidu Image Search seems to delete the words "MEIZU M8" the relevant results. I do not know why, it is MEIZU request? Public relations problem?

Well nothing to add to that nonsense, and cut into the subject, as we all know MEIZU M8 can buy now, you do not know where to buy? Click to buy MEIZU M8, or directly landing Taobao Find your favorite stores to make a purchase. MEIZU the first time mobile phone channels may be a number of local entities can not buy the case of the shop.

2400 all-yuan price, as listed MEIZU M8 new products are the inevitable price of water so high, the first is to enhance their own "high-end" image, and the second is a small profit. For me personally I think the price should be MEIZU M8 yuan in 1600 would be reasonable, of course, 1300 will sell well.

I guess that would be years later掉价MEIZU M8, but the rate will have a significant掉价would probably be the first time prices fell to 1999 interval. So like MEIZU M8 friend Please wait a little macro news out of time now, after all, the WINCE MEIZU whether there BUG system as well as some hardware problems we are now unclear.

MEIZU M8 future is a very bumpy road, and immediately after the first quarter of the year, many vendors will show their new models of MEIZU M8 example is the impact, after all, the current trend of large-screen mobile phone , full-screen touch, so the majority of manufacturers introduced new models will be the case. MEIZU so in the future competitors will be more and more I have never had anything to MEIZU M8 opponent by default IPHONE, I find it this is not a level of products, regardless of who is who cloning, at least, the brand value, as well as products their own and so on, MEIZU are unmatched, I think the biggest rival to MEIZU those山寨phone. If you can from the mountain fastness of the hands of mobile phone access to a large number of users, so far as to IPHONE opponent to earn more.

MEIZU only set aside, will fly farther, in any case, after all, domestic brands still cost-effective competition, let's not talk about MTK cheap. MEIZU overall or higher than the mountain fastness machine several levels. Of course, now the price is several levels. 2380 media quotes, at this price, I believe many of my friends prefer to buy refurbished old version iphone, now refurbished non-3G version of the IPHONE is around 2,400 yuan. And 2400 the price you can buy a lot of good phone, a little Tim HTC that money can buy a diamond. MEIZU M8 no doubt for the price is still very embarrassing.

As for the prospect of MEIZU M8, for me personally that is not optimistic about the good, I am optimistic about the MEIZU itself for product design, as well as occupy a place for many years media player industry experience, is not optimistic about the public relations MEIZU M8, publicity, a number of factors such as price, my mother often said, are good by the by, is to let the bad side of the monks read. Indeed, a product more to see how the operators to promote. For now, for the evaluation of M8 fully than in previous years, because it is too M8 dystocia of. And now for Taobao Although selling, but in many places there is no local goods. . Moreover, many mobile phone stores. . MEIZU the counters have not yet. Is also a thorny issue.

Concluded: M8 or should the price down. Around 1600 is a reasonable price. . There is not even pre-TV input (at least I did not see) a variety of media exposure is not a lot. I do not know what to do MEIZU team. Is busy Lunar New Year holiday?

Peter Thiel gave $100,000 to the scientists trying to resurrect the woolly mammoth

Peter Thiel

Woolly mammoths could be coming to a park near you sometime before 2027, thanks to funding from PayPal founder and tech luminary Peter Thiel.

That's according to a new book by Ben Mezrich called "Woolly: The True Story of the Quest to Revive one of History’s Most Iconic Extinct Creatures."

As the MIT Tech Review reported, Thiel made a quiet donation of $100,000 to a de-extinction organization called "Revive & Restore" in 2015.

The project to revive woolly mammoths has been going on for several years, but it gained new attention in February when a team of Harvard scientists said they intend to resurrect the furry creature within a decade.

The woolly mammoth went extinct 10,000 years ago, and in reality, the scientists wouldn't actually be bringing it back. Instead, they aim to create a hybrid animal using genetic material from an elephant and a woolly mammoth. To do that, they'd carefully combine a selection of DNA from both creatures using gene-editing technology Crispr, put the fetus into an artificial embryo, and accio! Woolly elephant. Elephammoth. Mammophant.

Regardless of its name, the resulting animal would essentially be an elephant with mammoth features like long, shaggy hair, subcutaneous fat, and blood uniquely adapted for frigid temperatures.

mammothhuntedMammoths aren't the only animals that people want to resurrect — now-extinct or threatened species of reindeer, bison, wolves, tigers, and horses are also on the list of potential candidates. The movement to "resurrect" these creatures isn't limited to scientists, either; it's become a pet project of people across the globe, including a Russian father and son whose Kickstarter-funded "Pleistocene Park" aims to recreate a "vanished ice-age ecosystem."

Ethical debates about de-extinction projects are intense, with some scientists saying the animals could could help preserve endangered or threatened species and others saying it would destroy existing ecosystems.

Proponents say the project and others could help restore ecosystems and help fight climate change by bringing back plants like grasses and trees that suck up pollution. Other supporters say iconic resurrected animals could serve as a sort of "flagship species" which is used to encourage the public to protect the regions they represent.

But some scientists disagree. Tori Herridge, a paleobiologist at the Natural History Museum of London, is one of the scientists who examined the 28,000-year-old remains of a woolly mammoth uncovered in Siberia in 2014. She wrote in The Guardian that "cloning [a woolly mammoth] would be ethically flawed," since we still don’t fully understand the role that many of these now-extinct animals once played in the wider ecosystem.

The problem she raises, which has been pointed out by several other researchers as well, is that we don't know how these creatures' modern incarnations would affect other animals, plants, and the planet as a whole.

"It is unclear still whether the mammoth steppe disappeared as a result of the loss of the mammoth or whether the mammoth disappeared because its habitat was lost, along with its ice age world," Herridge wrote. "It’s a big gamble to put your climate-change mitigation hopes on a herd of woolly mammoths."

Quantum computation with indefinite causal structures. (arXiv:1706.09854v1 [quant-ph])

Authors: Mateus Araújo, Philippe Allard Guérin, Ämin Baumeler

One way to study the physical plausibility of closed timelike curves (CTCs) is to examine their computational power. This has been done for Deutschian CTCs (D-CTCs) and post-selection CTCs (P-CTCs), with the result that they allow for the efficient solution of problems in PSPACE and PP, respectively. Since these are extremely powerful complexity classes, which are not expected to be solvable in reality, this can be taken as evidence that these models for CTCs are pathological. This problem is closely related to the nonlinearity of this models, which also allows for example cloning quantum states, in the case of D-CTCs, or distinguishing non-orthogonal quantum states, in the case of P-CTCs. In contrast, the process matrix formalism allows one to model indefinite causal structures in a linear way, getting rid of these effects, and raising the possibility that its computational power is rather tame. In this paper we show that process matrices correspond to a linear particular case of P-CTCs, and therefore that its computational power is upperbounded by that of PP. We show, furthermore, a family of processes that can violate causal inequalities but nevertheless can be simulated by a causally ordered quantum circuit with only a constant overhead, showing that indefinite causality is not necessarily hard to simulate.

          DIY GAINCLONE AMPLIFIER

Prelude

Bikin ampli sendiri yuk!!

  8. Siapkan bor 1mm dan bor lubang2 yang ada
  9. PCB siap digunakan.

          Tarballs – Why?

More and more I begin to wonder why we generate tarballs at all these days. Is it just because it's easy - a function of "make distcheck"? There's certainly value in the actual distcheck process to ensure you have a sane build, but why actually distribute the tarball? What's the meaningful difference between a tarball and a git tag?

Now, I won't even touch on the subject of how badly I want to throw autotools in the trash, but we're so entrenched in its ways, and are comfortable with its quirks that energy is better spent on actual improvements, so for now the distcheck process is here to stay. For now.

So I ask a very serious question, others have asked as well - why publish tarballs? Most users get their packages in binary form from their distribution. Most users who build from source I would argue are using git already, or have git installed on their system, or can easily do so. Providing instructions on cloning/checkout out the tag/building using autogen/autoreconf/etc can be provided easily and clearly.

I migrated Banshee to Linode and consequently from Apache to lighttpd about a month ago. The logs start on June 20, 2010:

    $ grep -E 'banshee-1.+\.tar\.(gz|bz2)' \
        download.banshee.fm.access.log | wc -l
    7066

So in one month, we've only had 7066 tarball downloads, and that accounts for any and all released versions of Banshee over the past 5 years. Certainly the bulk of those downloads would be version 1.6.1, since that was the newest available tarball over the last month. 284 of those downloads were version 1.7.3, released less than 24 hours ago. I could generate better statistics, but that's not the point here. The point is that number is pretty small compared to the reach of the distributions.

I roughly estimate the average size of a Banshee tarball (bzip2) is 3MB. Eliminating tarballs would save us 20GB/mo in bandwidth - and that's during a quiet time in development when the servers are less active (1.6.1 was released in May). We'll be seeing a spike I'll be monitoring around 1.7.3.

So, if we ditched tarballs, how would you be affected? Would you care?

Update: to clarify a few things, you would still build and install like normal. For instance:

$ ./autogen.sh --prefix=$HOME/local --disable-whatever \
    && make && make install

Packagers would however have an additional minor burden. If their package system (e.g. rpm) requires an archive (e.g. can't build directly from git), then the packager would be responsible for creating an archive. They could either just archive the git clone directory, or actually run their own "make distcheck" from their clone. It would be up to the packager to best integrate the git clone into whatever system they are using.

SEO 101 The Advantages Of Article Spinning
A lot of people make a living by writing articles on the internet, and there are a lot of sites and portals where a writers’ article is published and displayed. For experienced writers, the art of article spinning is a must-have attribute.

Article spinning is the method of taking one article and creating several different unique version of it through the use of special tags. Search engines regard each version of a submitted article as a unique article, and when submitted to article directories, it is imperative to have unique articles so that they are each indexed.

The term article cloning, which is also called or referred to as article spinning, or article rewriting, is a unique way of taking an original article and changing it so that it seems like a new article. This method or process is not really a bad thing if it is done by the original author or a public domain article rewritten manually, but could become muddled if done using an article cloning program.

Currently, there are several article cloning programs available, and according to article spinning analysts, they pretty much do the same thing, which is turn a good article into a bad one. However, some programs do work properly and effectively.

So exactly just what does an article cloner or spinner do?. Most cloners or spinners have options to replace certain words with comparable words that may, or may not mean the same thing, add blocks of text at the beginning, middle and end of existing articles and move blocks of text around. Article spinners may indicate that the replacement word list for the specific software used was not as good or effective as theirs.

However, most professional spinners would note that it would not matter which version of cloning software you use, it’s how you do the writing or spinning yourself. According to experts, nearly all words have many different meanings and can mean different things in whatever context they are used. Computers just aren't smart enough to know which meaning of the word or context the author is using it in, and because of this, the articles becomes mostly muddled or lack direction.

Observers also add that after cloning the article you are left with two choices, either to submit it as it is, or go thru the article and fix everything. Neither is a good idea if you consider that by cloning, then fixing the article, you've wasted more time than if you had simply written a new article. However, with the entry of new computer programs, articles can be spun effectively, spooled, or re-written automatically using good software.

But if you create a well-written article to begin with, and then use the software correctly as a guide or reference, the software can re-write it into hundreds or even thousands of unique, high quality pieces that you would be confident enough to put your name on. And additionally, they will be more than unique enough to avoid the duplicate content filters that abound.

If a writer wants to be successful, he or she should be able to get his or her well-written article onto hundreds or even thousands of other websites. To be profitable in writing articles for the internet, one needs to create uniquely written articles for each website, and get paid good sums for it.

Peter Thiel gave $100,000 to the scientists trying to resurrect the woolly mammoth

Peter ThielFred Prouser / Reuters

Mammophant.

Regardless of its name, the resulting animal would essentially be an elephant with mammoth features like long, shaggy hair, subcutaneous fat, and blood uniquely adapted for frigid temperatures.

mammothhuntedWikimedia CommonsMammoths aren't the only animals that people want to resurrect — now-extinct or threatened species of reindeer, bison, wolves, tigers, and horses are also on the list of potential candidates.

Thea 2: The Shattering First Look at the Event Editor

Event Editor for the upcoming 4X Strategy/RPG hybrid Thea 2: The Shattering will allow you to weave your own custom events and stories into the game. This feature was available in the original Thea: The Awakening, and in Thea 2 it'll get a fresh coat of paint and some expanded functionality. Here's what you can expect:

The editor will have all of the usual functions, so building complex branching events with the ability to add pictures, assign groups, write stories and set challenges. You will be able to affect single player or multiplayer modes, add or remove characters and resources and even add new skills as rewards.

As previously, you will be able to choose an event type, a difficulty level and a set of prerequisites for that event to occur.

A couple of new features:

Ability to add your own features via scripting to ensure your ideas can be implemented without our fussy input.

Having a saved group (characters or items) that can be used between events, so if thieves steal your stuff, you can reclaim the actual ‘thing’ they’ve taken (in Thea 1 you had to improvise and give back something similar, especially if the event was more than one part long).

Cloning entire modules (collections of events), as well as cloning events into other modules. So you can connect some generic encounters with more complex ones, or connect stories without having to manually reproduce the mechanics.

We now also have a separate output for the surrender option, so you know, some enemies may now react differently to you giving up than when they actually beat you.

The way in which the event logic works will have some vital changes, but since those are still in the works, I won’t say too much about them. But, the layout and the principles remain the same. You have prerequisites, which can include specific race/sub-race, class, skill type, resource, gender, type of biome or terrain you’re on, number of players in game, or just pure chance. Then you have your processing, where you can create any number of combinations from those mentioned prerequisites, like choosing particular number of people, allocating a ‘must have all the groups’ or ‘must have only one of the groups’ and so much more. Then your final stage, results, where you confirm the prerequisites.

Our hope is that the editor will give our players a chance to create their own adventures and share them with friends so that exploring Thea will be even more fun.

          I don't wanna
It's weird to think, but home schoolers have summer holidays too.  Mostly because it's damn hard to continue with business as usual while the rest of the world is on holiday or, at least, pretending like they don't have jobs.  Around here we get only a couple months of summer weather and then we're back to the snow, so folks like to fit in as much sun and fun in as they can, while they can.

It's a little frantic, actually.

Already, we are swamped with invites for beaches, swimming, camping, parties, fairs, conventions... am I complaining that we are so popular and have all these things to do?  No, not really.  My actual invites from real human friends remains slim.  But social media does like to push along the many, many events happening in my town and around the province.  On Facebook, you know if you invite twenty people to your pool party, fifteen will respond with 'Interested' and three will show up.  Can you imagine if people started going to all the places they say they are attending?  Cloning technology will advance by light speed out of sheer need for multiple selves.

(I know that is not how cloning works, but I didn't want accuracy to get in the way of the point.  As every uncle everywhere has said, why let truth get in the way of a good story?)

There is a lot out there to feel like you should go to and even more to get all FOMO about.  In my neck of the woods, everybody goes camping and wants to share their favorite camp spot with friends. Mostly, cynic me believes, it's because it's about the laziest hosting experience possible (short of your own funeral) and inviting a few friends to a campground gets you off the hook socially for the rest of the year.  No need to clean your house or provide food or entertainment or gifts, just invite everyone out into the woods with their tents and some beers and your job is done.

As a family, we are generally pretty busy.  We take our hobbies seriously.  Hardly a day goes by without an activity or appointment or sports practice.  During the day, the childs I are off to something, and without any scheduled concerns, we'll go on a park crawl (like a pub crawl, but with more playgrounds and less booze), visiting or some big long hike.  Like most home schoolers, we're never home.  In fact, one of the major reasons why we chose to home school is that we couldn't figure out how to do all our out of school activities and still have time for school.  Assuming we also like to sleep.

But at the start of this summer, with roller derby lurching into off season, all the activities taking their break, our dojo limiting their summer hours... suddenly, our time to participate in summer fun like camping and fairs and beaches is wide open.  And guess what?  I don't think I want to.

I have, it feels, been neck deep in recreational activities all year long.  Facilitating the childs' activities and my own.  I'm tired of recreating.  I'm thinking I could use a little bit of buckle down and work.  A holiday from fun.

I could sum up my entire attitude to this summer to: nope, don't wanna.  I don't wanna go camping or to crowded beaches or street carnivals or even to run down the ice cream truck.  It's all sort of more-ish when I could use some less-ish.

When I was a kid (here we go), summer was a time of slowing down, not speeding up.  I remember having entire weeks of nothing planned but laying in the shade looking up at the clouds.  I am not advocating a return to my somewhat uninspired childhood (I have many sad pictures in my family photo album slurpee cups, which I apparently I had a stronger bond with than my family members or friends), but it seems that one thing that I really need a break from is recreation and entertainment.

I am already entertained.  And it's tiring.

Part of this may be coming from the fact that I am a bit injured and pain is taking away my sleep and ability to enjoy things.  But the feeling of needing to wind down and just NOT for awhile has been growing for months.

Could also be because I'm going to be turning forty two years old this summer and my what's-it-all-about-anyway-when-you-get-right-down-to-it questions are also starting stealing my sleep.  I mean, really?  What's the point?

I think I'm going to try something novel, for us home schoolers.  I'm going to stay home.

Optimistically, I'll get a few things done around the house and go easy on the pocket book.  Maybe even someone will feel sorry for my camping-improvised childs and take them away for a few days for a camping experience I don't have to be involved in.  Some studio time, making something I can  use (another quilt? Something about this thirty above weather says no), making some real progress on girl child's downstairs room that we've been building for a year or so.

Realistically, it will probably be a lot of rolling around on lawn furniture, complaining about the heat and reading books.  Or dropping the kids off at the swimming pool while I go hide in the air conditioned library.  Really, that sounds very nice too.

Anything is possible when you refuse to make plans.
          Killing and Being Killed

Dear Atul,

May I say that it is a pleasure for me as well to be chatting with a doctor (and a fine, fierce, and very brave writer as well) whom I am not interviewing and who therefore isn't suspicious of me, as all interview subjects should be suspicious of reporters; and whom I am not consulting as a patient and therefore not suspicious of myself. In truth, I don't go to doctors unless I am desperately ill, which means I am always trying to wangle necessary prescriptions for things like Synthroid from people I don't actually have to SEE. It's a holdover from my dad, who could never quite shake his Christian Science upbringing and who therefore mostly refused to go to doctors. Of course, his record was not exactly inspiring. He died 25 years ago this week of a melanoma that he watched growing on his torso for many months before he finally had it surgically removed. Too late: It had spread to his brain.

On that peppy note, I'll answer the question you thought I wouldn't. I'm working on a story about the origin of cooking and its profound impact on the evolution of human beings, a quirky little exercise for me, considering that my idea of cooking has a lot to do with poking fork-holes in microwaveable food bags.

I will also address your question about why there is so little science news on days that don't correspond to the publication dates of scientific journals. You're right. It's ridiculous. Science writers are far too beholden to the whims of the journals and their Taliban-esque embargo policies.

But we have problems trying to do end runs around journals, because if a scientist discusses data with reporters in any but the most general, wishy-washy terms, the scientist's work will not be accepted by any of the major journals. The journals give high-handed explanations for their gag rule—to improve the accuracy of science reporting!—but, as my colleague Larry Altman has pointed out, the real reason is simple greed. Journals want to make money by amassing the greatest possible advertising revenue, which requires, among other things, that they dictate the terms of how and when scientific data are released.

Speaking of the release of data, is it possible that one reason why New York's murder and crime rates are down when everybody else's are rising is that New York really was shaken to its marrow by Sept. 11? Maybe even the bad guys got good for a while. And now that I've brought bone marrow into the discussion, are you interested in hashing out the stem-cell and cloning mess at all? I really loved the letter in the New York Times this morning from Nancy Horwich, pointing out that if President Bush opposes human cloning for any reason because, as he said, "no human life should be exploited or extinguished for the benefit of another," then how can he defend capital punishment, which involves killing one person for the questionable benefit of others?

As for capital punishment, it was wonderful that for a while the nation, as exemplified by Illinois' moratorium, seemed to have soured on the whole barbaric business. But since September, ah, how sweet and righteous revenge can seem! Yup, killing and being killed are sure working their usual magic around the world.

Will you cheer me up now with happy news of that patient on the table??

Natalie

Association of Professional Genealogists Hit By Scam - Lessons Learned
Last week the Association of Professional Genealogists announced it had been targeted by scam artists. The villains were able to impersonate the secretary's email and offered to pay APG members an hourly fee to lobby state legislatures regarding forensic genealogy.  In a further attempt, members received requests to "Support Diane's Brain Cancer Battle."  APG quickly quashed the scam by alerting members and asking them to report any such attempt at fundraising and asking that those affected to notify the organization.

I have some professional knowledge of cyber security and I have been the target of email cloning and twice had my credit card accounts hacked.  I, therefore, would like to offer a few cautions of my own.

1. Source. Be cautious of any solicitation via email or social media, especially Facebook. We have all heard about fake news on social media, yet it is hard not to click on that story about the baby with cancer.  Look carefully - is it a story supposedly about someone in a small Missouri town but the link takes you to a website that is not linked to any local, regional or state news source?  Don't be taken in just because it is a sad story or even a happy one!

2. Context.  Does the email read like a normal / regular communication you receive from an organization? Often databases are hacked by groups in foreign countries then they are sold to individual criminals or organizations.  If you closely read the fake email there will be grammatical mistakes or colloquialisms that don't fit.  For example, did a New England genealogical society end their request with "see y'all in the spring!" when you know their annual conference is in the fall and no self-respecting Bostonian would say y'all like we do in the south?  Sometimes it isn't that simple, but if you look you will often see things that just do not fit the norm.

3. Legitimacy. If any legitimate organization is soliciting funding, take a minute to think about the source and what they are asking.  Would an organization such as APG solicit funding through their work emails for an individual?  The answer is never.  Most companies and non-profit organizations have rules about using their official communication sources for private funding.

4. Check it out. At the national level any non-profit must register and are held accountable by federal law.  You can check out charity ratings at Charity Watch. For an organization such as a genealogical society, go to their website for information about events and solicitations.  If an organization is undertaking a fundraising campaign, you bet it will be front and center on their website.  Also, you can contact them via phone or mail, but use only phone numbers that you find officially linked to the organization not one provided in the suspect email.

5. Be familiar with the typical scam.  You can check  this US government website that lists common fraud types: https://www.usa.gov/stop-scams-frauds#item-35157.

According to an IBM report, the global cost of cybercrime will reach $2 trillion by 2019, a threefold increase from the 2015 estimate of $500 billion. Small, regional and even local organizations are not immune. The IBM report explains, "a staggering 50 percent of small and mid-sized organizations reported suffering at least one cyberattack in the last 12 months."

Your best bet is to be aware, be vigilant of your own finances and social media presence and most importantly when and if you are ready to give to a worthy cause, take the time to do the research and get your hard-earned dollars in needy hands, not those of criminal organizations.

Comment on A closer look at AMD's new Ryzen Pro chips by Greg Zeng
Industry watcher like myself have always wondered with the AMD versus INTEL methods of innovation. AMD seems to have complex mergers of strange companies & talents. More intellectual cross-breeding. Intel seems more NIT, NIMBY & closed to insiders only, but with more pure research gambling, which seems to have worked. AMD's multi-culturalism approach has the usual problems of internal misunderstandings, poor optimizations in management, etc. Darwinian evolution seems t show that sexual disharmony is however better in the long run for survival, than non-sexual cloning, with little genetic diversity from outsiders. This type of analysis & discussion is of great interest, controversy, etc to all in senior management. Will Darwinian evolution proved true again? Will AMD's mammals replace Intel's dinosaurs for Earth dominance?

Mammophant.

Regardless of its name, the resulting animal would essentially be an elephant with mammoth features like long, shaggy hair, subcutaneous fat, and blood uniquely adapted for frigid temperatures.

mammothhuntedWikimedia CommonsMammoths aren't the only animals that people want to resurrect — now-extinct or threatened species of reindeer, bison, wolves, tigers, and horses are also on the list of potential candidates.

Audulus 3.4 Update Adds Support for Multichannel Audio/CV Output

Audulus LLC is proud to announce the release of Audulus version 3.4 - a free update for all Audulus platforms* allowing users to access up to 16 audio and control voltage (CV) inputs and outputs through two brand-new nodes called ADC (analog-to-digital converter) and DAC (digital-to-analog converter).

Previously, Audulus users were limited to two inputs and two outputs using the Mic and Speaker nodes. Now, with the ADC and DAC nodes, Audulus users can take full advantage of their DC-coupled** audio interfaces, such as the Expert Sleepers ES-8 and the Universal Audio Apollo.

This means that users can now integrate Audulus seamlessly with hardware synthesizers and analog effects pedals using their computer or iOS device.

Some examples uses include:
Sending and receiving simultaneous audio, modulation, and envelope CVs to up to 4 Eurorack filters for true analog filter polyphony
Clocking multiple Korg Volcas at different speeds or divisions of a master clock
Sequencing analog synthesizers with volt-per-octave (VPO) signals
Receiving multiple DC signals from hardware controllers like CV joysticks and ribbon controllers for ultra-high-resolution control over your digital synthesizers
Receiving, quantizing, and sending out analog VPO signals
Generating LFOs and envelopes of any imaginable shape
Using stompboxes on a send & return within your Audulus patches
Cloning, adapting, and modifying true work-alikes of digital and analog Eurorack modules
Generating quadraphonic or surround-sound-style effects for keyboards and guitar
Receiving an analog master clock and generating divisions, probability triggers, or Euclidean-style rhythm sequencing (or mix of all!)
Storing, recalling, and rapidly switching between different modular synth patch routings
Analyzing a guitar’s pitch and volume envelope within Audulus and converting them to an analog VPO and envelope signal
Using Audulus as a multi-effect rack with 4 mono inputs and outputs or 2 stereo inputs and outputs (with an Expert Sleepers ES-8)

These are just a few of the possibilities Audulus users have explored so far. To keep up with patches and modules using the new ADC and DAC nodes, sign up for the Audulus user forum and download and share your patches there - http://forum.audulus.com

An example of Audulus sequencing VPO signals and envelopes through an Expert Sleepers ES-8:

https://soundcloud.com/audulus/bimini-road-persistent-cough-ambient-house

Users can also follow Audulus on Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Soundcloud, and Facebook @audulus for tutorials, video clips, and sound samples of what the ADC and DAC nodes can do.

If Audulus users have any questions about how to implement the ADC and DAC nodes, they can contact Audulus at support@audulus.com

Happy patching from all of us at Audulus!

* Audulus iOS requires the Apple Camera Connector Kit to connect to the Expert Sleepers ES-8.

**Most normal audio interfaces are AC-coupled. AC-coupling prevents a constant DC offset from damaging speakers and headphones. DC-coupled audio interfaces like the Expert Sleepers ES-8 are not required to use all 16 inputs and outputs of an audio interface or aggregate device. DC-coupled audio interfaces are required to send and receive accurate DC-offset analog signals such as gates, VPO signals, and envelopes.
          Presets and adding new fixtures

Gabe,

Patch the 11 additional fixtures first. Then, using the clone command, clone your original fixture to the new fixtures. There will be options to clone presets only, cues only, groups only, or all. I would recommend backing up / saving your show first. That way if something goes wrong you can restore / reload it.

Here are some links to help describe it.

http://controllersupport.martin.com/Content/Manual/Patching/Cloning_Fixtures.htm?Highlight=Clone

Good luck and remember, the fixtures must be patched before they can be cloned.

          Monument Valley fan project

@t1_hopscotch wrote:

Monument Valley 2 just came out

There is a beautiful in-game scene that took my breath away :open_mouth:

I thought:

It is the moon, so big! :full_moon: I never knew it could be like this.

And then later onwards,

I want to recreate the moon.

I was thinking it would be interesting to think about doing the colours, at the least. It starts off pink at one point, then it looks like there's a gradient to another colour on the point directly opposite.

(I almost feel like I shouldn't be drawing on this artwork...)

I realised just now that it's not actually yellow but that was how I perceived it the first time (probably because the idea of the moon being called yellow sometimes?) so that was how I did it in a test:

I did a linear transition between the two colours on the outside. It just means that the colour at any point along the outside is directly related to how far the point is between the other two points.

E.g. at halfway between the two points along the outside, the hue, saturation and brightness value is halfway between the HSBs of the two points. That was the main point for the colouring. As for the drawing positions, you can probably see by the direction of the lines in the picture.

Then I added a background:

This was also just another transition between two colours (purply at the bottom, and creamy at the top. (Although I didn't mark them in the picture, the specific final HSBs were HSB(290, 60, 60) and HSB(25 + 360, 20, 100) respectively. The reason that for adding 360 was to avoid negative numbers in calculations)

I added refinements for the colours, trying to make them smoother, and quicker etc other small things. (The fast clone method continues to astound me!! thanks again to Valgo and ThinBuffalo's efforts ) then fixing up things that occurred when switching to using clones to draw (I still couldn't work out one thing — it wasn't cloning the exact expected amount. But it didn't affect much anyway.)

The results of all this

:+1:

It would be interesting to try draw some purple pillars with faded colours towards the bottom, like how the towers are in the original picture. I can see a way of doing by repeatedly drawing trail diamonds, one by one on top of each other, and changing the colour slightly with each one. Or it might be cool to use a 3D technique like @MR.GAM3R's 3D test:

We would probably only need rotation around one axis for this project though, if you wanted to make it interactive  The only problem is that I can't seem to find a Unicode diamond that has 135º and 45º angles though (I think that)

It would also be a nice thing if the project was in portrait, but not big enough of a wish yet to make me change the project width and height in the JSON :stuck_out_tongue:

I don't know if I'll do these changes (adding faded towers, put it in portrait) but feel very welcome to jump in! That is the whole point  I only set out to make a gradient moon  so that was satisfaction enough for me. (The developers of Monument Valley also really love fan creations actually ) so again feel very free to join in.

I wasn't really planning to add more, as I had scratched that itch. Then, while I was writing this, I had gone to grab the original artwork when I saw the little flecks at the bottom, and decided to add a few in

Some reflections

Doing these things reminds me that:

  • the process is just as important as, if not more than, the outcome,
  • mistakes are part of it! sometimes your project even evolves in ways you would never expect, from little experiments with the mistakes
  • it's just made of incremental changes.
    • (I think it's nice to see that everything, even stuff that seems big, is just little changes over time. And they all build up :yum: actually publishing small changes each time makes it really easy to track what changes you've made, and you always have a backup to revert to if you accidentally mess anything up too.)

I guess some more things were:

  • inspiration can come from anywhere!
  • Hopscotch is an amazing medium for self expression, for just quickly working on something you have in your head. It didn't take long at all from 'this moon is beautiful!' to 'I now have my own version of this :relieved:'

Anyway, feel very welcome to share about what's going in your head as you make something. I really love hearing about the development process of any creation. What went into the little parts of your projects? what little design choices you made, how you decided to set out the code, the evolution of ideas, all the thought into the little things

I don't know, I think it's just really fun doing bursts like these

If you are feeling inspired with Monument Valley 1 or 2, feel welcome to join in here too again

          IWE and genre
"Civilisational or religious partitioning of the world population
yields a 'solitarist' approach to human identity, which sees human
beings as members of exactly one group…This can be a good way of
misunderstanding nearly everyone in the world. In our normal lives, we
see ourselves as members of a variety of groups – we belong to all of
them… Each of these collectivities, to all of which this person
simultaneously belongs, gives her a particular identity. None of them
can be taken to be the person's only identity or singular membership
category."
– Amartya Sen, from the prologue to Identity and Violence: The
Illusion of Destiny

Remember, books are people too. It's fairly clear that questions
related to literary taxonomy are primarily questions for booksellers
and critics, not readers or writers. On the other hand, these are
questions writers at least might consider being aware of, because they
play a very real role in determining their means of earning a
livelihood – which, while obviously not the objective of writing in
itself, is something a lot of writers would enjoy being able to do.
While struggling to get my own work published, I've learnt that
writing, while remaining the only meaningful experience in the entire
publishing process, is merely a stage of the entire quest, and in that
light, it's been rewarding discussing some rather non-writerly
questions with other writers as well as publishers and critics.

Some of this project springs from personal frustration; the division
of books into categories that aren't immediately obvious (non-fiction,
for example, is completely inoffensive) has always disappointed me as
a reader, and as a writer, simply because nearly all my favourite
books, like my favourite people, are multi-dimensional; they defy
definition, they grumble greatly when categorized. My own work is
found in shelves marked, depending on the speculations of bookstore
managers, Indian writing, SF/fantasy, children's literature and once,
memorably, cookery. Literary borders are as difficult to draw as
political ones, though their creation fortunately involves less
bloodshed. That said, the social sciences of the literary world are
both fascinating and relevant, and their flaws, such as artificial
segmentation and aggregation, are the same as those of any process
that seeks to study heterogeneous objects as a mass.

This set of essays, however, is fundamentally flawed on many levels -
it is about a nascent, hard-to-define sub-section of literature, the
as-yet-mostly-nonexistent sub-genre of Indian speculative fiction in
English, which is itself a bastard child of two parents who, not
being dead, are difficult to analyze as they are not only infinitely
complex at any point, but, to complicate things further, change all
the time as well. However, since we're dealing mostly with science
fiction and fantasy here, I'll hope I can be forgiven for looking into
the future, and for making what might turn out to be wild, fantastical
claims.

What is Indian/South Asian literature in English? Even if we get past
the tricky question of origin, which has obsessed scholars since the
term came into being, and include the non-resident and the genetically
partially South Asian, in recent years the growing diversity in South
Asian English literature should lead to more questions – having
overcome the 'South Asian' part of the question by being
all-inclusive, how do we now define 'literature'? Do we include comics
and graphic novels, speculative fiction, thrillers, chick-lit, campus
novels and crime fiction, all of which have reared their heads in
India over the last decade? This should prove a lot more difficult for
the sagacious and scholarly to do, given that literary snobbery is far
more acceptable than racism – and that Indian-origin writers abroad
might have very thin connections with India, but large advances and
literary awards add a great deal of density to the study of the field
– build its brand, in other words, however gut-shrinking that might
sound, while diversity in the form of new, not necessarily mainstream
writing increases the number of spices in the curry, but, in the eyes
of many not-so-neutral observers, does not necessarily add to its
taste.

The term 'speculative fiction' is another puzzler. It's a beast that's
known by many names – weird fiction, SFF, literature of the
imagination – literature that in some way transcends the real, though
it's nearly always a mirror image of the real, with certain upgrades.
Speculative fiction, spec-fic to friends, is essentially an umbrella,
a bar where a number of disgruntled genres come to hang out, its
leading patrons being fantasy, science fiction, horror and alternative
history
. It's claimed by the bartenders that magic realism is also a
customer, though one suspects magic realism, a frequent invitee at
literary wine-and-cheese soirees, would deny this if asked. The term
is often attributed to Robert A Heinlein, who used it as a synonym for
science fiction in an essay in 1948. Whatever the genre includes, the
reason for the term's existence is simply that books within the genre
are difficult to classify, and terms like spec-fic sound vaguely
impressive, are easier to explain than more bizarre concoctions like
magic realism, and also convey that these books aren't Literature,
silence disgruntled writers complaining that their work isn't 'just'
SF or fantasy, and bring together a great many fascinating writers who
write about mind-bogglingly diverse things in mind-bogglingly
divergent styles, and allow everyone concerned to ignore these facts:
all (good) fiction is inherently speculative, all fiction involves
imagination, and escapism in literature depends on content, not
classification or theme.

In contemporary speculative fiction, one of the most frequently
discussed sub-genres is one that is in the process of being created –
the New Weird, a genre starring speculative fiction writers like Neil
Gaiman
, M. John Harrison and China Mieville, who all work under the
speculative umbrella, but blend their tales with other literary genres
as well. This is something science fiction has in common with science
– the most exciting work takes place in the overlaps between fields,
when boundaries are diffused and maps are redrawn.

"Something is happening in the literature of the fantastic. A
slippage. A freeing-up. The quality is astounding. Notions are
sputtering and bleeding across internal and external boundaries.
Particularly in Britain, where we are being reviewed in the papers, of
all things, and selling copies, and being read and riffed off by yer
actual proper literary writers. We are writing books which cheerfully
ignore the boundaries between SF, fantasy and horror. Justina Robson,
M John Harrison, Steve Cockayne, Al Reynolds, Steph Swainston and too
many others to mention, despite all our differences, share something.
And our furniture has invaded their headspace. From outside the field,
writers like Toby Litt and David Mitchell use the trappings of SF with
a respect and facility that has long been missing in the clodhopping
condescension of the literati."
-China Mieville, author of Perdido Street Station, The Scar, etc., in
a guest editorial in The Third Alternative 35

Of course, spec-fic and mainstream literature have often had
cross-border talks – think of the magic realism of Murakami, or
Rushdie, or Marquez, or the not-SF SF of Margaret Atwood. Some of the
most iconic writers of contemporary speculative fiction blend genres
frequently and with ease – consider the exuberant book-peopled
universe that is Terry Pratchett's Discworld, or Stephen King's Dark
Tower series – in the last few years, Susannah Clarke's Jonathan
Strange and Mr. Norrell was a successful marriage between speculative
fiction and the 19th-century English novel. And then, of course,
there's the most successful writer in the world, J.K. Rowling, whose
blend of spec-fic and school stories have changed the world. Philip
Roth does alternative history; Bret Easton Ellis does horror. In a
sense, the term New Weird examines a phenomenon that's not new at all,
in a literary world of which the most outstandingly weird aspect is
its compulsive need to segregate stories into categories in the first
place. Given that the term isn't very old, most New Weird writers
probably aren't even aware that they could be so described, because,
fortunately, no one wakes up in the morning and says, 'Today I will
start a New Weird novel.' Jeff Vandermeer, one of the New Weird's
leading lights, describes it as " an affliction visited upon many of
us involuntarily. Labels like that one are at this point simply a
marketing tool."

"I always tell wannabe writers not to read too much in the field where
they work. Obviously you need to keep in touch, but a deep knowledge
of the Old West or world history stands you in better stead than a
shelf of other people's fantasy books. Import, don't recycle. That's
actually wisdom, that is."
– Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld books, in an interview at
www.scifi.com

This is something Indian/South Asian writers of spec-fic would do well
to absorb. While it is, of course, necessary to keep in touch with
contemporary spec-fic (for practical reasons, to make sure you're not
reinventing the wheel, as well as for sheer reading pleasure) there's
no particular reason to feel disheartened by the fact that the first
glimmering of a body of work that could be called Indian spec-fic in
English began to be available in India about seven decades after pulp
SF magazines became wildly popular in the US, not to mention about a
century after Bengali SF became popular and a few millenia after the
Indian epics spoke of flying chariots, amazing weaponry and other
worlds – there's still a lot that Indian spec-fic could give the
genre, though there is also a lot of catching up to do. The sheer
richness of India as a spec-fic source material resource – not just in
terms of myth and folklore and history, but in contemporary politics,
the arts, entertainment and social trends, and in the completely
absorbing story of India as a growing, rapidly evolving nation – calls
out for imaginative speculative treatment. And typically, this
resource has already been mined by Western writers in search of
something exotic to offer saturated Western SF markets.

This is not to suggest even for a moment, of course, that Indian
writers should see themselves in anyway constrained to write only
About India, since that might be damaging for their own writing, and
might only reinforce stereotypes already present in the publishing
world - the last thing Indian writers like being reduced to is writers
whose only possible role could be Explaining India. At the same time,
there's obviously nothing wrong with Indians writing about India and
things Indian if that's the space in which the writing is naturally,
organically set, and there are several Indian stories that survive,
indeed, thrive on, constant retelling. And there are still a number of
brilliant spec-fic novels just waiting to be written that are, in
various senses, Indian, and if Indian writers don't write them, others
will. The process has already begun.

Even if we set aside the existence of India's wealth in natural
resources as far as spec-fic is concerned, the sparsity of finished
Indian spec-fic is all the more remarkable given the abundance and
immense popularity of Indian writing in English. Of course, the
absence of Indian spec-fic books on bookshelves worldwide does not
mean these books aren't being written – it just means they aren't
being distributed even if they are being published. Spec-fic and
literary publishing are mostly segregated (another reason for
genre/mainstream borders) and the remarkable success of Indians in one
field is in no sense a source of increased attention for Indian
writers in the other. Besides, the literati aren't the only with silly
prejudices in the publishing world; the SFF publishing space has its
own problems, the most blinding one being that readers of spec-fic,
especially in the US, are presumed to be looking for the familiar
unfamiliar – bug-eyed aliens, even more Tolkienspawn, more simplistic
George Lucas clones – that spec-fic, far from being literature that
explores new territory, boldly going where no books have gone before,
is as much literary comfort food as, say, most mass-produced
contemporary chick-lit. As publishers search for the familiar, much of
what is new and exciting but unfamiliar fails to break through the
crystal ceiling. Familiar plots, familiar characters, familiar tropes
gain strength through repeated cloning, making sure that the spec-fic
market remains white-male dominated, both in terms of protagonists and
writers. This is clearly something Indian writers will have to
struggle against, but they will certainly not be the first to join
battle – pioneers like Samuel R. Delany and Octavia Butler have
already made huge steps to make the spec-fic world aware of these
prejudices, and they haven't been the only ones. Thanks to a variety
of factors, such as a real tiredness among readers of repetitive plots
and the phenomenonal information/culture bomb that is the Internet,
even American publishers are slowly opening their minds and their
coffers to spec-fic material from across the world – consider the
success of manga, the fastest growing phenomenon in world publishing
today. Spec-fic is certainly less inward-looking than it used to be,
and the New Weird, however questionable its definition, is a very real
symptom of this.

And it's a better time now, than ever before, to be an Indian spec-fic
writer. The initial forays into Western markets have been made; Indian
spec-fic writing is increasing, albeit slowly, over various media as
the global popularity and increasing mainstream acceptability of
spec-fic trickle across to India; perhaps most importantly, the Indian
readership of spec-fic is growing and diversifying, as more
cutting-edge spec-fic, again, in various media, begins to be available
in ever-expanding bookstore chains. If good spec-fic is written now,
there's more chance of it reaching Indian readers, and readers
worldwide, than ever before. To achieve that, here's one possible
future; Indian writers bring their home-grown skills into the world of
spec-fic, blurring and reinventing genres, adding themes, experiences
and visions as yet unseen in the spec-fic world. In other words, they
colonize the New Weird, making it truly new. And truly weird.

Rana Dasgupta, author of Tokyo Cancelled, on putting books into boxes:

Q: In publishing terms, you're seen as a 'literary' writer. But in
your first novel, you've used themes that relate fairly extensively to
the domain of speculative fiction - the memory database, the woman who
turns into a store, the relationship with a doll, and so forth. but
since your writing style puts you under 'literature', these influences
would then fall in the realm of 'magic realism', another imposed
classification to distinguish speculative-in-literary from
straightforward genre fiction, putting you into yet another artificial
pocket with writers like Margaret Atwood, Toby Litt and David
Mitchell. What are your thoughts on literary/publishing
classifications like 'mainstream' and 'genre'? If, under threat of
torture, you had to classify your own work, where would you place it
on the speculative/literary spectrum?

A: Frankly I find the game of categorization very boring, whether it
is by nation or "genre". It may have some function for people in
marketing, but it's of no interest to me in my own writing. I write
something only because it seems to have a particular force to me, not
because it will satisfy the requirements of a particular genre, or
appeal to a certain kind of person.

In my personal view, books categorized as "science fiction" often meet
the standards of "literature" better than books categorized as
"literature" do. This is because i have a particular idea of
literature. for me, literature is philosophy: its purpose is not to
describe what we already know to be the case, but to create an
experiment with the imagination. Science fiction has always done this,
of course. Moreover, "reality" now seems to be an entirely science
fiction-style project, and to eschew science fiction totally is often
to retreat into some kind of improbable, and uninteresting, refuge.

I don't think serious writers have any business internalizing the
slogans and generalizations of industry. To me it is entirely
destructive to their work. It can only result in the censorship of
the imagination - because something does not fit easily within a
genre, or will be too complex for the imagined audience, etc. It is
precisely in
the moments when one is surprised by one's own writing, or fearful of
its implications, that one reaches into spaces that are interesting
and enduring.

          Clone & Sync Issue

Cloning a widget works fine but when every time I make a change in one of the cloned widgets ALL of the information gets copied over to the other cloned widget and I lose my information! I need to clone a widget but then I DO NOT WANT TO SYNC IT.

How do I solve this issue? I love using the sidebar but I need to be able to DUPLICATE and NOT SYNC the widgets.

Thank you,
Brent

          TechEd for Novices, 2012 Edition

Originally posted on: http://ferventcoder.com/archive/2012/02/24/teched-for-novices-2012-edition.aspx

In 2007, Microsoft created a "Tips for the Newbie" page for TechEd (which is apparently no longer available) and I created a follow-on post called Tech·Ed for Novices. I created a similar post in 2008  as well. With TechEd 2012 around the corner, I thought it would be good to bring it back.

TechEd is a huge event, topping out at over 14000 people (usually), with an equally huge amount of content. This post is designed to give first time TechEd attendees a fighting chance of finding their way around. (As Microsoft updates the content catalog, I’ll make sure this post is kept up to date with any change to session types, etc.)

Session Types

There are over six different session types available at Tech·Ed and each one is very different, so it is up to your individual learning style to decide which ones will be better. The problem is, what are the differences?

Birds of a Feather (BOF)

The Birds of a Feather sessions are not presentations, they are a moderated open-forum environment that promotes discussion and interaction. Because these sessions are led by third-party experts, attendees enjoy free-flowing dialogues about products, technologies, and solutions without necessarily focusing on Microsoft. They are generally fairly small in number, around 20 people or so, but that is an average.  These sessions are organized and facilitated by INETA.

Breakout Session

Breakout sessions are what everyone probably thinks of when they think of a convention like this. These are the speaker-lead presentations. They are usually not very interactive (except for a Question and Answer period at the end) and are a great way to learn about new technologies from some of the industries leading experts. These are the most common type of session you will probably be attending.

Hands-on Lab

The Hands-on Labs are self-paced technical labs. They are a great way to get direct access to the technologies being presented at the conference and "play". The labs come with a lab manual and additional resources about the topic as well as lab assistants to help you out if you run into a problem.

Instructor Led Lab/Workshop

Instructor Led Labs (or Workshops) are just like the Hands-on Labs, except you have an instructor to help walk you through the lab, answer technical questions and provide some level of interaction. All of the instructors for the Instructor Led Labs are Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCTs), so you can be assured that you are in capable hands.

Interactive Theater

The Interactive Theaters are probably not what you might expect. If you plan on going to one, get there early as they fill up quickly. These are very interactive, very informal discussions on a particular topic by someone who is usually very knowledgeable about that topic. These are an excellent way to get some very good, detailed information about a topic.

Lunch Session

Lunch sessions, as their name implies, occur during the lunch break and are usually an interactive discussion about a topic. They are a little more formalized than the Birds of a Feather sessions, but not quiet as interactive as the Theater sessions.

Building Your Schedule

While Microsoft generally considers the "Communications Network", also known as CommNet, as the place to start for TechEd, I think the place to start is with the online schedule builder before you get to the event. Hopefully the schedule builder will get a much needed overhaul to make it more user-friendly, similar to the current Content Catalog, but we won’t know until it’s available.

No matter what, the point is that you need to have an idea of what sessions you are going to before you get there. There are 12 technical tracks, making it difficult to figure out what is important. Fortunately, Microsoft provides a summary of the track content to help you focus on which tracks are important to you.

The thing to realize about the tracks is that they are a way to group session content on a large scale. Sessions can, and often do, cross multiple tracks and sessions aren't always in the track you might expect. As a result, don't try to focus on any one track and only go to sessions in that track. It's a good starting point, but that's it.

For example. if you are a solutions architect (or any kind of technical architect), chances are that the majority of your sessions will fall under the "Architecture & Practices" track, but that doesn't mean there won't be sessions in the "Developer Tools, Languages & Frameworks" track or the "Windows Azure" track that aren't important.

The other thing to understand about the tracks is that they are only useful if you want sessions covering a broad (or high-level) technology category. If you want information specific to a certain technology, such as Smart Clients, you will need to spend some extra time looking at each of the tracks and finding the sessions that are relevant.

Deciding on your sessions

Deciding on sessions is not a trivial task and can take at least several hours. When picking sessions, don't choose them based solely on what your employer has you working on. That's right, just because they are paying for you to go does not mean that you should restrict your sessions to what you think is important to them or your current project. Now, I'm not saying you should completely ignore it, either. Usually you're working there (and on that project) because your technical interests and skills match to some degree. If there is a technology that you are using that you feel you need more in-depth information about, then pick some sessions about it. Just remember to also pick sessions that are going to be interesting to you and help you in the long-run of your career. If you don't have any interest in the topic and are going to the session only because your employer told you to (or you think it's what they want you to go to) you aren't going to enjoy the experience and you won't get a whole lot out of it.

Don't forget that some of the sessions repeat on a different day. If the session is going to be repeated the first session should say "Repeated on xxxx" (where xxxx is the day) and the repeat session should say "Repeated from xxxx". The other indicator is that the session "code" for the repeated session should have an "R" at the end of it.

Session Codes

While we're talking about session codes, you should realize that they are just as important as the session titles and descriptions; they give you the "quick glance" way to see some basic information about the session. (Since the session builder isn’t available yet, I don’t know if this information is still correct. Once the session builder is available I should be able to confirm and correct anything here that needs it.)

The session code has the following format:

AAALLL[R][-SSS]

where

AAA: Technical Track (abbreviated)

LLL: Technical Level

[R]: The actual character "R", only present if the session is a repeat session

[-SSS]: The session (delivery) type. This is the actual "-" character followed by the 3 letter session type abbreviation. Remember, if it doesn't have one then it's most likely a breakout session.

The technical tracks all have a 3 letter abbreviation, which allows you to easily see what track a session belongs to. Remember, sessions can repeat across tracks, but they are assigned only one code. What this means is that the primary track (usually the one listed first) is the one whose code is used, so you may see SOA sessions in the SFT track.

There are two exceptions to this rule for the following session types:

  • Birds of a Feather - BOF
  • Lunch Session - LNC

The technical level is broken down by difficulty and is:

  • 200 - Intermediate
  • 300 - Experienced
  • 400 - Advanced

In reality, only the first number (2, 3, or 4) is important here. The rest of the number is just a sequential number that has no useful meaning (at least to us). Even though some of the other session types also have a technical level associated with them, this level is only used in the session code for Breakout sessions. The rest of the sessions just use a straight sequential number.

The session (or delivery) type is only listed if the session is not a breakout session. The session types are:

  • Hands-on Lab - HOL
  • Instructor Led Lab - ILL
  • Interactive Theater - TLC

Creating your calendar

Just because cloning isn't feasible and you can't be in two places at once doesn't mean you can't schedule multiple sessions at the same time. The best way to build your calendar is to do it in steps.

The first step should be all of the sessions you have an interest in. Don't worry if there is a lot of overlap. My own schedule usually has at least 3 sessions in most of the time slots. The goal here is to get all of the sessions you are interested in put on the calendar.

The second step is to look at each time slot and prioritize the sessions. If you are using Outlook, you can do this using the color categories. The idea here is that you want to rank the sessions in order of priority interest to you. The ones you most want to attend should be green, second most would be yellow, and third (or more) should be unmarked. This is a great way to see where your interests are heading and helps narrow the field.

It's alright to end up with multiple priority 1 sessions at the same time. Your schedule is not set in stone and it will change. Leading up to the event, Microsoft is still adding sessions and once the conference starts sessions will be canceled, rescheduled and repeat sessions will be added.

Communications Network (CommNet)

No, this isn't like SkyNet (from the Terminator movies or the UK), but it is the central hub for everything that is going on at TechEd. In order to log in, you will need to use the same user name and password that you were given by Microsoft when you registered. (This is the same one you use to access the online schedule builder tool.)

CommNet gives you key logistical information about the conference:

  • conference agenda
  • floor plans
  • bus shuttle schedules
  • city highlights
  • session schedule

At the end of each session, you will be asked to fill out an evaluation survey for the chance to win...something. You do this through CommNet. You can also download presentation materials for your session ahead of time (and sometimes after the session as well). Not all of the sessions get their content up before the session, so you will have to keep checking.

Wireless Internet Access

If you have a laptop or mobile device equipped with 802.11a/b/g/n wireless, then you can connect to the Internet throughout most of the convention center. Microsoft has Wireless Help Desks set up throughout the convention center to help configure your laptop or mobile device if you run into problems. Remember, the wireless network is an open, shared network, so there are no security protocols (WPA, WEP, etc.) enabled. Treat this just like you would any other public wireless network.

To be safe, follow the following steps:

  • Install all Microsoft critical patches and updates for your operating system. Visit www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate
  • Download and install the latest anti-virus signatures for your software
  • If you suspect that your system is not properly patched, visit the wireless help desk PRIOR to connecting to the network
  • Ensure that your personal firewall software is active
  • Ensure that your system is set to infrastructure wireless use only and is not associating to, or broadcasting, ad-hoc networks
  • Monitor your connections—do not connect to the wireless and wired networks at the same time

myTechEd

myTechEdLogo[1]

In 2007, Microsoft introduced Virtual Tech·Ed, which was the "one-stop" shop to extend the TechEd experience before, during, and after the event. This has subsequently been replaced by myTechEd, which has both an online portal and a Windows Phone app (if you don’t have a Windows Phone (you should get one!) you can use the myTechEd Mobile Web site. Using myTechEd, you can quickly:

  • Identify other attendees with whom you would like to meet
  • Share information about yourself and your background
  • Schedule meetings that will take place during the conference.

Dealing with the Information Overload

As you can see, there is a ton of information and it can be quite overwhelming for the novice attendee (and even some veterans). The best way to deal with the information overload is to:

  • Plan your schedule so you are going to sessions that you have an interest in.
  • Try to break up the content type, don't do just breakout sessions. Try some Hands-on or Instructor Led Labs, Birds of a Feather sessions, or the Interactive Theaters.
  • Don't worry about missing a session. The sessions are usually available online after the conference ends.
  • Hit the exhibit hall. It's a great way to relax between sessions and find out what other companies are working on or what's new from your favorite company. Yes, you will end up getting your badge scanned and probably have to deal with sales calls afterwards, but it can be worth it.
  • Take advantage of the free food. One thing that TechEd is known for is the extreme amount of snacks provided.
  • Go to the Jam Sessions and the event party. They are worth it. I make it a point to go each year and usually bring my family to it. Having them around helps decompress at the end of the day and gives them a nice mini-vacation.

In the end, enjoy the conference. It's a great way to get some excellent technical information and some excellent networking opportunities.

From Cyborgs to Hacktivists: Postfeminist Disobedience and Virtual Communities

Carolyn Guertin

For many the term postfeminist might call to mind the vanilla pleasures of metrosexuality, webcams, online soaps, and blog culture, but, for me, a 40-something cyberfeminist scholar, curator and some time activist, the politically-minded feminist texts I work with are in fact dyed-in-the-wool postfeminist ones that occupy a different place on the postfeminism continuum from those more loudly-lauded, lighter confections. Usually given a bad rap by the media, postfeminism has been accused of being antifeminist, whereas it is instead what the next wave of second wave feminism has become. Its name is not a marker or movement that intends to imply that feminism is dead and gone, any more than Donna Haraway’s “postgender” and N. Katherine Hayles’ “posthuman” mean the death of those old shoes. As Ann Brooks puts it in Postfeminisms, “the concept of `post’ implies a process of ongoing transformation and change” (1). Postfeminism is that indicator that shows us the organism formerly known as feminism has grown into something far more complex than its liberal origins would lead us to expect.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, second wave feminism, which had spoken predominantly from and to a position of white middle class privilege, began to fracture to include a broader chorus of voices, classes, and races. Postfeminism or, more exactly, postfeminisms have expanded to include a multitude of situated perspectives within the context of postmodern thinking, and have swelled to embrace the new emphasis on what Michèle Barrett identified in 1992 (the year that the World Wide Web was born) as “fluidity and contingency” - features that are the trademark stock in trade of the cyber age. Barrett believed feminism’s paradigm shift to be the result of a new interest in culture that in turn gave rise to a whole new collectivity of subjectivities. It is no accident that this shift coincided with the advent of a technology that foregrounded networked communications. It was only a few years earlier, in the fledgling days of the personal computer back when the Internet was still a vehicle predominantly for hackers and technogeeks, that Haraway first articulated a politics of connectivity for women in the context of these new technologies. In her “Cyborg Manifesto” Haraway’s half-woman, half-machine revels in the confusion of body boundaries and fractures all sense of an originary unity or simplex gender through embracing the cyborg as a model: a being who revels in discursivity, multiplicity, hybridity, and perversity. As the Web has evolved, it has become something of a gene pool for creative explorations of sexualities, subjectivities and identities - and has proved to be as liberating for men as for women in that regard. Cyberfeminist scholar Sadie Plant even argues for the feminizing influence of technology in a connected age. Without a doubt, though, this new technology’s most important role has been that of facilitating communication.

“cyberfeminism is post-feminist” (76) Cyberfeminism was born at a particular moment in time, 1992, simultaneously at three different points on the globe. In Canada, Nancy Paterson, a celebrated high tech installation artist, penned an article called “Cyberfeminism” for Stacy Horn’s Echo Gopher server. In Australia, VNS Matrix (Josephine Starrs, Julianne Pierce, Francesca da Rimini and Virginia Barratt) coined the term to label their radical feminist acts and their blatantly viral agenda: to insert women, bodily fluids, and political consciousness into electronic spaces. That same year, British cultural theorist Sadie Plant chose the same term to describe her recipe for defining the feminizing influence of technology on western society and its inhabitants.

-Judy Wajcman

Connectivity has been called the genius of feminism by theorist Robin Morgan (53), and this genius is being realized in electronic spaces and texts in more complex ways than in any other medium to date. Connectivity is the poster child of the postfeminist universe, which is why the first cyberfeminist collective, VNS Matrix, chose the image of the matrix - the cosmic womb - as its symbol The Australian collective VNS Matrix announced its inception with a rallying cry called the “Cyberfeminist Manifesto”:
__________
We are the modern cunt
positive anti-reason
unbounded unleashed unforgiving
we see art with our cunt we make art with our cunt
we believe in jouissance madness holiness and poetry
we are the virus of the new world disorder
rupturing the symbolic from within
saboteurs of big daddy mainframe
the clitoris is a direct line to the matrix
VNS MATRIX
terminators of the moral code
mercenaries of slime
go down on the altar of abjection
sucking the visceral temple we speak in tongues
infiltrating disrupting disseminating
corrupting the discourse/we are the future cunt
(http://www.obn.org/reading_room/manifestos/html/cyberfeminist.html)
__________
Its separatist nature bears a resemblance to philosophies put forward by hackers.
. Another cyberfeminist collective, the Old Boys’ Network, defined its local chapters as “nodes” that “collide, disintegrate, regenerate, engage, disembody, reform, collapse, renew, abandon, revise, revitalize, and expand” (OBN FAQ 7). These structural and mechanical concerns are not accidental. Postfeminisms do not inhabit a network; they are the network of feminist discourse in virtual space and they are at their best when they are helping to forge communities of practice. In its incarnation most familiar to ebr ‘s readers, the electronic, hyperlinked text is both a narratological structure and the means of navigation in space and time. In the webbed space of hyperlinked fiction, the pregnant gaps between the nodes are at least as important as the textual nodes themselves. The nodes exist in conjunction with the dynamic space of the journey and cannot be discussed in isolation. So with the newest literary forms of the postfeminist universe. They cannot be separated from the communities and material praxes that they both engender and nurture on and off the Web.

In the cyberfeminist corner of the postfeminist universe, girl gamers such as Brenda Laurel and Mary Flanagan immediately spring to mind; so too do techno-performers such as Laurie Anderson and Coco Fusco, and new media artists such as Mez or Olia Lialina, but the most important and distinctive Web-native postfeminist form is, I would argue, hacktivism. The term was first coined in 1998 The rallying cry of hackers has long been “information wants to be free.” to describe an emerging hybrid form that united the best attributes of peaceful social protest - activism - and tech-savvy online civil disobedience - hackerism The term “hacktivism” has been attributed to a Toronto-based hacker who goes by the handle of Oxblood Ruffin.. It is a solution-oriented form of political action that inserts bodies and media-based dissent into real time material concerns. It should not be confused with its adolescent and illegal cousins, cractivism - code cracking, vandalism, data blockades (DDos) and the loss of digital data - or cyberterrorism - acts and agents of wanton destruction including worms and viruses. One of its trademark features is that the Web cannot contain hacktivism’s flows, allowing it to spill out into the world in the form of political protest at WTO and G8 events, for example, and in books, pamphlets, net.art, and performance art.

Hacktivism as a praxis was born in December 1997 when Critical Art Ensemble Critical Art Ensemble has been very much in the news lately since one of its members, Steve Kurtz, a professor in the Department of Art at SUNY Buffalo, was arrested on 12 May 2004 and charged with bioterrorism under the American Anti-Terrorism Act. These trumped up and widely protested charges have resulted in the FBI appropriating CAE’s materials and equipment used for testing for the presence of genetically- modified DNA - the tools CAE uses in creating their political art. member and software engineer Carmin Karasic was so appalled by the events of the Acteal Massacre - 45 Zapatistas were murdered at the hands of the Mexican government - that she set out to create a Web interface that would perform political protest as an aesthetic act. Three other Critical Art Ensemble members joined her in forming a new collective they named the Electronic Disturbance Theatre. (The group’s name is drawn from the concept of civil disobedience first proposed by Henry David Thoreau.) Their electronic civil disobedience engine is named FloodNet; funded by RTMark and launched in September 1998, it is Karasic’s brainchild in her war against injustice. Filling the browser page with the names of the dead, this activism tool “would access the page for Mexico’s President Zedillo seeking bogus addresses, so the browser would return messages like “human_rights not found on this server” (Cassell). Unlike the attacks launched by cracktivists, no damage is done by this software agent. When the Electronic Disturbance Theatre alerts its “online activists to `commence flooding!’” they visit EDT’s website and click on FloodNet’s icon (Harmon). The software then directs their browser to the target, and cues the same page to load over and over again.

As a postfeminist work, it is no accident that FloodNet must function as a community-based performance:

FloodNet’s action only drew its validity from the number of people showing support. “It was only actualized through thousands and thousands of participants,” she remembers. “It was meaningless without the masses.” Popular support transforms a random act of vandalism into a show of presence, Karasic argues. “This is an important difference between the single hacker/hacktivist who takes down a server with a single script” (qtd. in Cassell).

Similar to the disruptive aestheticization of codework by the Dutch trio jodi.org, Karasic sees her collectivity interface as something more closely akin to “conceptual art” than to cyberterrorism (Harmon). No one and no data are harmed in these `attacks,’ but websites are effectively shut down while the protest is being transmitted.

Advancing human rights through the electronic media is also the purview of another collective, a cyberfeminist one called subRosa. It is currently comprised of Laleh Mehran, Hyla Willis, Steffi Domike, Lucia Sommer, and Faith Wilding. It was also formed in the fall of 1998 - around the same time that Karasic was vowing to respond to Mexican excesses with FloodNet. Donna Haraway was the first to identify science as one of the most insidious cultural forms women needed to address to regain control of their bodies; subRosa follows in that tradition. subRosa uses its art to critique “the relationships between digital technologies, biotechnologies and women’s bodies/lives/work” (Griffis). The goal of these hacktivists, akin to the Electronic Disturbance Theatre’s, is the creation of communities, what they call “female affiliations that respect difference and create productive projects in solidarity with others who are working on similar ones” (Griffis).

Embracing bell hooks’ definition of feminism as that which seeks to eradicate ideologies of domination (qtd in Griffis), subRosa undertakes projects of activism and public education on topics as wide-ranging as eugenics, Frankenfoods, stem cell and cloning research, and Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Seeing their purpose as a pedagogical one, they launch inclusive electronic campaigns, publish pamphlets and books, and travel out into (particularly third world) communities to perform their topical art. These are what they call resistant projects, tactical cyberfeminist ones, and situational information theatre: “As cyberfeminists and artists we are using the framework of participatory performance as an information theatre of pedagogical art that models various tactics for intervening and commenting on the seductive representations of the flesh machine” (subRosa). One of the keys to their successful distribution of information is their willingness to mix media and cross boundaries, producing their art and materials in a plethora of formats contextually situated for their audiences. Like FloodNet’s participatory form, subRosa’s mode of information distribution is reproducible, for it argues “[i]n the digital age, resistant cultural producers can embrace recombinance for subversive ends” (subRosa).

All of this may seem somewhat removed from the electronic book and literary traditions, but when postfeminisms meet the new media they encourage these kinds of pleasures in the confusion of boundaries between bodies, texts, technologies, politics, and cultures. In a hyperlinked age when the only true path through a text is a personal journey, the many roads of postfeminism show that comminglings of radical politics and material concerns are alive and well in both the virtual and real worlds. How effective these hacktivist actions are is difficult to measure, but they are remarkable as tools for global mobilization and peaceful protest. It is clear that they are very effective at allowing women’s voices to be heard.

If you just want to re-create one map, use whatever program you’re familiar with. If you’re not familiar with any (advanced) graphics editor or would like to do more than one map, definitely try a vector graphics editor like Inkscape. Especially grouping, aligning and cloning features make your life a lot easier.
After a failed attempt with GIMP, I re-created the Austrian map without any prior knowledge of Inkscape. It took me a good tutorial and about 2 hours to get it done. Afterwards I did Puerto Rico - in 20 minutes. (Neither of those look as polished as the maps above though, but that wasn’t my intention anyway ;) )

          Tech·Ed for Novices, 2008 Edition

Originally posted on: http://iamsaif.com/archive/2008/02/25/techmiddoted-for-novices-2008-edition.aspx

While I'm waiting to find out if I'll be able to go to Tech·Ed again this year I am still keeping an eye on what's going on with the conference. For last year's Tech·Ed, Microsoft created a "Tips for the Newbie" page (which is apparently no longer available) and I created a follow-on post called Tech·Ed for Novices. Since the conference this year is split into two separate weeks, I thought it was even more important for some tips on how to deal with the information overload and what Tech·Ed has to offer.

Session Types

There are six different session types available at Tech·Ed and each one is very different, so it is up to your individual learning style to decide which ones will be better.

For Tech·Ed Developers, the sessions are organized and facilitated by INETA, while Culminis is responsible for Tech·Ed IT Professionals.

Hands-on Lab (HOL)

The Hands-on Labs are self-paced technical labs. They are a great way to get direct access to the technologies being presented at the conference and "play". The labs come with a lab manual and additional resources about the topic as well as lab assistants to help you out if you run into a problem.

Instructor Led Lab (ILL)

Instructor Led Labs are just like the Hands-on Labs, except you have an instructor to help walk you through the lab, answer technical questions and provide some level of interaction. All of the instructors for the Instructor Led Labs are Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCTs), so you can be assured that you are in capable hands.

Interactive Theater (TLC)

The Interactive Theaters are probably not what you might expect. If you plan on going to one, get there early as they fill up quickly. These are very interactive, very informal discussions on a particular topic by someone who is usually very knowledgeable about that topic. These are an excellent way to get some very good, detailed information about a topic.

Lunch Session (LNC)

Lunch sessions, as their name implies, occur during the lunch break and are usually an interactive discussion about a topic. They are a little more formalized than the Birds of a Feather sessions, but not quiet as interactive as the Theater sessions.

Building Your Schedule

While Microsoft generally considers the "Communications Network", also known as CommNet, as the place to start for Tech·Ed, I think the place to start is with the online schedule builder before you get to the event. Hopefully the schedule builder will get a much needed overhaul to make it more user-friendly, but we won't know for another few months.

No matter what, the point is that you need to have an idea of what sessions you are going to before you get there. For Tech·Ed Developers there are 16 technical tracks while Tech·Ed IT Professionals has 20 technical tracks making it difficult to figure out what is important. (Hopefully I'll be able to provide a summary of the track content to help you focus on which tracks are important to you.)

The thing to realize about the tracks is that they are a way to group session content on a large scale. Sessions can, and often do, cross multiple tracks and sessions aren't always in the track you might expect. As a result, don't try to focus on any one track and only go to sessions in that track. It's a good starting point, but that's it.

For example. if you are a solutions architect (or any kind of technical architect), chances are that the majority of your sessions will fall under the "Architecture" track, but that doesn't mean there won't be sessions in the "Developer Tools and Languages" track or the "Web and User Experience" track that aren't important.

If you are using Outlook 2007, you can do this using the color categories. (Outlook 2003 users can use the Label feature.) The idea here is that you want to rank the sessions in order of priority interest to you.

No, this isn't like SkyNet (from the Terminator movies or the UK), but it is the central hub for everything that is going on at Tech·Ed.

If you have a laptop or mobile device equipped with 802.11a/b wireless, then you can connect to the Internet throughout most of the convention center.

Virtual Tech·Ed

Starting with Tech·Ed 2007, Microsoft introduced Virtual Tech·Ed, which is the "one-stop" shop to extend the Tech·Ed experience before, during, and after the event. In addition to Virtual Tech·Ed, you also have Tech·Ed Connect, which allows you to connect with other Tech·Ed attendees before the conference starts.

Using Tech·Ed Connect, you can quickly:

All attendees will receive a DVD set containing all of the presentations a few months after the conference ends. A lot of the breakout sessions are recorded during the event, so you can actually watch them from the DVD.
One thing that Tech·Ed is known for is the extreme amount of snacks provided.

Why Vivo Prides Itself In Doing Group Selfies

If you think taking selfies are hard, it'll be a lot more difficult if you are taking a photo of a group right? Imagine your Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, your Aunts, your Uncles, your siblings, your cousins in one frame. That is a problem people have to face everytime there is a family gathering and you have to do it in one place. In the past, it'll probably be sacrificing one or more of these people and have them be cut out of he picture just to save this memory of your loved ones, this is where Vivo listens.

The latest on the V5 line called Vivo V5s boasts of a 20 Megapixel Front Camera with an F 2.0 aperture capable of catching a great amount of light so your images stay crystal clear even in difficult lighting conditions. Your selfies won't need to be attached to sticks anymore as the OS has built in camera software that can take panoramic selfies so you just take a photo in the front and swivel the phone from side to side so you cab have your friends and family fit inside the frame. That only means you don'y have to call the waiter or bother someone else when you're taking group selfie shots in a party, in a gathering or just about any event you could imagine.

Not to discount the other splendid things like 13 Megapixel Rear camera that's got an F 2.2 aperture too which you can use for Ultra HD shots up to 52 Megapixels. The OS of the phone also has got an App Cloning feature so you don't have to log in and out on different Facebook accounts, IG or Twitter if you need to use it from one brand to the other (perfect for social media managers no?)

Aside from that, it does take those other phone branda a run for their money because this phone only costs Php 14,990. Way better specs, camera and features, why shouldn't you switch phones if you are gonna get more for the same price right?

You can decide for yourself, but think about what you will get for the same price point okay? :) oh and to answer the question, they simply do not make the task too hard for users. They pride themselves with these phones because they think about YOU. :)

Woolly Mammoth Sparks Debate Over Cloning
A woolly mammoth carcass that was frozen in ice for 40,000 years may make it possible for scientists to bring the extinct species back to life. The mammoth was found embedded in ice on a remote island off northern Russia in May 2013.
