          Grid Custom Cell Editor Closing

Hi Kendo UI Team,

I'm trying to create a custom editor for in cell editing within a kendo grid.  Our custom editor is a combination of your multiselect/treeview ui widgets.

The problem I am encountering is that when you click the cell and the editor appears, attempting to further interact with the editor will then cause the cell's custom editor to minimize - I suspect the grid thinks I am clicking out of the scope of the editor (because the editor is larger than the cell that contains the bound data and has absolute positioning below that cell) and thus closes it.  Is there any way to get around this problem?  As it is right now, I am unable to interact with the custom editor without it closing the cell's edit mode.

(unfortunately our custom editor is... complex... so I don't think I have a nice code sample to put here for you)

Best,

Jeff

Determine Parent Row When Row Detail Template Is Slected

I have 2 Gridviews. Gridview B is nested inside GridView A. GridView B's ItemsSource comes from A.SelectedAttachments.

When I select a row in gridview B is there a way to programatically select GridViewA? I want to try to remove a row inside gridview B but how would I do that if I don't know the parent object it belongs to.

My main goal is to be able to remove items from A.SelectedAttachments through a context menu of GridView B.

          progressbar in a column

thanks georgi. that works perfectly.

a couple of other random questions on this.

your example code as well as my code utilizing your technique contains a period at the end of the bar . how do I get rid of that

also how can I center the percentage text and and a % sign.

again thanks for the code its just what I need

          3.0.0 exception

It was the tns-core-modules version.  Thank you.

I am also having a performance issue.  You can find the code to replicate it here: https://github.com/simplec-dev/radlistview-performance

It works reasonably well on an x86 emulator.  When I put it on an actual android device, the performance is bad.  First, it takes a while to render - my actual app navigates to a page like this and it hangs for 2-5 seconds.  Second, once it is rendered, the first scroll lags by 1-2 seconds.

I've been playing with it for about a week and can't get it to perform better.

Some things I have noticed:

1) linear layout doesn't have the same problem

2) I have tried using itemWidth and itemHeight to give the rendering process a hint.  It has no affect visually or with performance.

3) I added height to the top level css "show-tile" and it had no affect on performance

4) I tried the webpack aot compile and it didn't affect performance

Any help would be appreciated.

It creates a functioning dropdown Inline, but in PopUp the input field does not render, but rather shows the HTML:

          Image Orientation Issue: RadImageEditorUI

The image I'm working on has some metadata because of which the landscape photo is displayed portrayed. User can rotate once loaded, but what I'm trying to achieve is load the image with proper orientation in first place. I have tested my C# code to read the metadata orientation of image and correct it accordingly to load it properly in normal WPF image control. But I'm having problem using the same code in the Telerik RadImageEditorUI. Basically, I'm looking for an event that could be raised when user selects open>select image from radImageEditorUI dialog box, which then I can use to handle the orientation handling code.

So, my question is, is there something in Telerik RadImageEditorUI that can handle the orientation issue when loading image? or Is there some kind of image loading or image selected event raised?

How to get event id in custom editor on document ready?

I'm using a custom editor to incorporate some extra fields we are saving with our events. I am trying to set up the editor so that certain fields are hidden on an event add, but show on an event edit. I'm trying to do this by running some jQuery on document ready of the custom editor, to test if the event id is 0. What I'm finding however, is that on that event, the id is always 0 and it doesn't populate until some time later.

Do you know of any way I can get that id when document ready fires for the custom editor? Or is there another event I can use that would have the appropriate timing to get the id in time to hide those fields?

Please let me know if any code examples would be helpful.

CHAPEL TO REMAIN UNCHANGED WHILE ECU REVIEWS REQUEST
Kathryn P. Boswell Memorial Chapel
Kathryn P. Boswell Memorial Chapel

East Central University announced it is immediately withdrawing its efforts to remove religious icons from the historic Kathryn P. Boswell Memorial Chapel. The action was in response to a recent letter from the Washington, D.C.-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State letter to the state university.
“We moved too quickly,” said Katricia Pierson, ECU president. “We regret not taking time to pause and thoughtfully consider the request and the results of our actions on all of the students, faculty and community members who we serve.”
Pierson said initially the university removed some items to show support for all cultures and religious beliefs. The chapel is used for various religions, student clubs and events.
“This requires a more thoughtful and deliberate approach to the request,” Pierson said. “That will be our next step.”
Pierson said the university will immediately begin convening a committee of students, faculty and community members who represent a diversity of viewpoints to study the issue.
“I commend ECU for reviewing the policies, and taking the time to thoughtfully consider the impacts on everyone in the university and Ada community,” says Senator Greg McCortney.
“ECU is committed to diversity and welcomes different perspectives. This is an opportunity to have a thoughtful dialogue,” adds Pierson.  “ECU will not take further action until the committee has had ample time to discuss and establish policies or guidelines for religious expressions in the art, history, architecture, study and areas of worship on campus.”
“Any further actions will be taken after our conversations with the committee and our valued community of students, faculty, alumni and Ada citizens,” Pierson said.

Jeepers (It's Christmas) in July Giveaway Hop

Welcome to Jeepers (It's Christmas) in July blog hop! Sponsored by Aroma Foundry, giving one lucky winner a $25. Gift Code. Hosted by  MamatheFox.com, and co-hosted by The Mommy Island and The Kids Did it. Brought to you by Mom To Grandma! After my entry form you will find many more bloggers with great prizes for you to win, Enjoy and Good Luck!

We received a sample in exchange for a honest an unbiased review.

We have had the opportunity to receive some essential oils from Aroma Foundry for a review.

So many people are turning to essential oils. Essential oils are liquid extracts that are distilled from plants, flowers and trees. It often takes the entire plant or more to produce a single drop of oil, making essential oils very concentrated.

I received Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, and Peppermint Essential Oils from Aroma Foundry. I found, compared to some other places that sell Essential Oils, Aroma Foundry has very affordable prices. Other places can get costly.

Eucalyptus Essential oil is 100% pure and all-natural. This Essential Oil is sourced from the United States, hand bottled in California, and hand-inspected and boxed at their facility in Santa Barbara.

Eucalyptus Essential oil is highly effective for treating respiratory problems, such as asthma, bronchitis, COPD, pneumonia and even tuberculosis. It is good for colds and flu, hair nourishment, odor removal from air and more.

Tea Tree oil was first extracted in Australia. Aroma Foundry sticking to their native theme, sourced their 100% pure and all-natural Tea Tree oil from down under.

The Tea Tree, which has become my favorite, can do just about anything. It's Antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal. Can you imagine the list I could come up for the uses of Tea Tree oil. If your going to invest in essential oil, I would recommend putting Tea Tree oil on one of your first orders.

Peppermint Oil is 100% pure and all Natural as well. A hybrid of spearmint and watermint. It has a reputation for bringing calmness and serenity when inhaled. Grown in Washington in the United States, smelling it creates a sensation like a cool northwestern wind. The smell of this is amazing! Use it in a difuser.

Lavender Essential Oil is one of the most useful, unique, and popular essential oils. Aroma Foundry gets theirs in the United States; when you catch a whiff it'll recall lavender flowers you walk by in a planter or garden. Steam distilled from the violet blue flowers, its 100% pure and all natural and is also 100% made from lavender oil.

I have used these essential oils in my difuser to make the house smell amazing. I have used them to replace some of my chemical cleaners. I love them and I don't think I'll be going back to some of those cleaners. Aroma Foundry makes getting these essential oils at a cost that wont hurt our budget.

Aroma Foundry is a Santa Barbara, California company founded by a team with a goal to create quality All Natural products that let Mother Earth show off what she can do. They put the customer first, and rest assured they use all of our products ourselves before we offer them to the public.

You can connect with Aroma Foundry via Facebook , @AromaFoundry , Instagram and Aroma Foundry Website .

Must be 18, US only, sorry friends. Winner must return winning e-mail within 48 hours or forfeit. Please give the RC a moment to load. While any one entry will enter you, the more tasks you complete, the higher your chances. Good Luck Everyone!

          Mengapa Yahudi?

Mengapa Yahudi Terlalu Berkuasa?

Oleh : Dr Farrukh Saleem
Semakan Oleh : Mohd Taha Hassan

There are only 14 million Jews in the world; seven million in the Americas , five million in Asia, two million in Europe and 100,000 in Africa . For every single Jew in the world there are 100 Muslims. Yet, Jews are more than a hundred times more powerful than all the Muslims put together. Ever wondered why?

Jesus of Nazareth was Jewish. Albert Einstein, the most influential scientist of all time and TIME magazine's 'Person of the Century', was a Jew. Sigmund Freud -- id, ego, superego -- the father of psychoanalysis was a Jew. So were Paul Samuelson and Milton Friedman.

Nabi Isa (Jesus of Nazareth) ialah Yahudi.

Here are a few other Jews whose intellectual output has enriched the whole humanity: Benjamin Rubin gave humanity the vaccinating needle. Jonas Salk developed the first polio vaccine. Alert Sabin developed the improved live polio vaccine. Gertrude Elion gave us a leukaemia fighting drug. Baruch Blumberg developed the vaccination for Hepatitis B. Paul Ehrlich discovered a treatment for syphilis (a sexually transmitted disease). Elie Metchnikoff won a Nobel Prize in infectious diseases.

Selain mereka banyak lagi orang Yahudi yang hasil kebijaksanaan mereka berupaya menghasilkan keperluan untuk kita semua: Benjamin Rubin memperkenalkan jarum suntikan pelalian. Johas Salk mereka vaksin polio yang pertama. Gertrude Elion mencipta ubat melawan leukemia. Baruch Blumberg mencipta vaksin Hepatitis B. Paul Ehrlich menemukan rawatan untuk siflis. Elie Metchnikoff menang Hadiah Nobel untuk penyakit berjangkit.

Bernard Katz won a Nobel Prize in neuromuscular transmission. Andrew Schally won a Nobel in endocrinology (disorders of the endocrine system; diabetes, hyperthyroidism). Aaron Beck founded Cognitive Therapy (psychotherapy to treat mental disorders, depression and phobias). Gregory Pincus developed the first oral contraceptive pill. George Wald won a Nobel for furthering our understanding of the human eye. Stanley Cohen won a Nobel in embryology (study of embryos and their development). Willem Kolff came up with the kidney dialysis machine.

Bernard Katz menang Hadiah Nobel kerana kajian mengenai transmisi neuromuskular. Willem Kolff mencipta mesin dialisis (mencuci) buah pinggang.

Over the past 105 years, 14 million Jews have won 15-dozen Nobel Prizes while only three Nobel Prizes have been won by 1.4 billion Muslims (other than Peace Prizes).

Sejak 105 tahun, 14 juta Yahudi menang 15 dozen Hadiah Nobel, sementara tiga dimenangi oleh 1.4 bilion umat Islam.

Why are Jews so powerful? Stanley Mezor invented the first micro-processing chip. Leo Szilard developed the first nuclear chain reactor. Peter Schultz, optical fibre cable; Charles Adler, traffic lights; Benno Strauss, Stainless steel; Isador Kisee, sound movies; Emile Berliner, telephone microphone and Charles Ginsburg, videotape recorder.

Mengapa Yahudi Terlalu Berkuasa? Stanley Mezor mencipta mikrocip pertama. Did you know that Harrison Ford, George Burns, Tony Curtis, Charles Bronson, Sandra Bullock, Billy Crystal, Paul Newman, Peter Sellers, Dustin Hoffman, Michael Douglas, Ben Kingsley, Kirk Douglas, Cary Grant, William Shatner, Jerry Lewis and Peter Falk are all Jewish? To be certain, Washington is the capital that matters and in Washington the lobby that matters is The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC. Washington knows that if PM Ehud Olmert were to discover that the earth is flat, AIPAC will make the 109th Congress pass a resolution congratulating Olmert on his discovery.

William James Sidis, with an IQ of 250-300, is the brightest human who ever existed. Guess what faith did he belong to?

So, why are Jews so powerful? Answer: Education.

Oleh yang demikian, mengapa Yahudi terlalu berkuasa? Jawapannya: Pendidikan, pelajaran, ilmu.

Mempengaruhi

Walter Annenberg menderma untuk membina ratusan perpustakaan berjumlah AS$2 bilion.

Jadi, mengapa mereka ini terlalu berkuasa? Mengapa umat Islam terlalu lemah?

Amerika sahaja, menghasilkan barangan dan perkhidmatan bernilai AS$12 trilion, China AS$8 trilion, Jepun AS$3.8 trilion dan Jerman AS$2.4 trilion.

          ILOGIC BOM UPDATING ISSUE

Hello,

I attached my entire assembly, this way you can actually look at the code for yourself. The issue is with the code in the "EVENTTRIGGERRULE". There are two separate actions happening, the first code is triggered when either "sewn" or "formed" is selected in the form. Then It will determine which parts are active and set them either to Phantom or Normal based on whether sewn or formed was chosen. The issue is that it does not always update correctly and I have checked the code but it looked all right.

The second part of the code is triggered by the inputs of "Collar1" and "Collar2" in the form, this is a numerical input. Based of the inputs it will choose the correct clamp to use based on the input size and if it is over 12" then It will determine the quantity of clamps based on the Variable parameters. Anything under 12" uses 1 clamp.  So the issue is that the BOM will not update the quantities when the clamp is over 12". I tried using event triggers but It is still having issues.

I would really appreciate some help because I have tried everything I could think of.

Thank you,

Cameron

Create File Dialog with 'Open from vault' capability using VBA

Hey guys,

I developed a program for the company I work for to export a formatted bill of materials from an Inventor assembly file. Currently, I have a 'Use active assembly' option and also a 'Browse for file' option. Unfortunately, when you browse for assemblies, the file dialog can only look for local files. In the program, I current use Application.FileDialog(msoFileDialogFilePicker) for creating the file dialog. I recently found a chunk of code that launches an Open file dialog that looks exactly like the one you get when pressing Open from the GUI. The only problem is that the little Open from Vault commandbutton is not on the VBA launched, Inventor style, file dialog. Is there a way to mimic what is launched from the GUI. I basically want to give the users the ability to open assemblies from the Vault that are not on their workspace.

Here is the code I found:

Public Sub TestFileDialog()

    'Inventor style open dialog

    'Create a new FileDialog object.
    Dim oFileDlg As FileDialog
    Call ThisApplication.CreateFileDialog(oFileDlg)

' Define the filter to select part and assembly files or any file.
    oFileDlg.Filter = "Inventor Files(*.iam;*.ipt)|*.iam;*.ipt|All Files (*.*)|*.*"

' Define the part and assembly files filter to be the default filter.
    oFileDlg.FilterIndex = 1

' Set the title for the dialog.
    oFileDlg.DialogTitle = "Open File Test"

' Set the initial directory that will be displayed in the dialog.
    oFileDlg.InitialDirectory = "C:\Temp"

'Set the flag so an error will be raised if the user clicks the Cancel button.
    oFileDlg.CancelError = True

' Show the open dialog. The same procedure is also used for the Save dialog.
' The commented code can be used for the Save dialog.
    On Error Resume Next
    oFileDlg.ShowOpen
    'oFileDlg.ShowSave

' If an error was raised, the user clicked cancel, otherwise display the filename.
    If Err Then
MsgBox "User cancelled out of Dialog"
    ElseIf oFileDlg.Filename <> "" Then
        MsgBox "File " & oFileDlg.Filename & " was selected."
    End If
End Sub

Is there a property that can be set so the Open from Vault commandbutton appears on the file dialog?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Simulate left click, API textbox Movement

Hello everyone, I'm having trouble getting textboxes created by AddFitted or AddByRectangle to work with the movesketchobjects and RotateSketchObjects methods.

I have code that I wrote that moves textboxes in an assembly based on the origin of a textbox and the rotation of a textbox in API and moves the textboxes to a location above a component.

The code worked just fine with the User Interface created textboxes, but not the  API created textboxes. The Idea is that someone could delete one of the textboxes and then the illogic would look through each of the sketches, check the formatted text of each of the textboxes, create the textboxes that are missing, and capture the textbox indices for moving the textbox later in the code... And I can confirm that it does that.

The Problem is that even though inventor knows where the textbox is, and can spit out what text is in the textbox and display it in a message box. Despite not missing any of the necessary parameters the move sketch objects method doesn't move it...

Changing the API textboxes "Rotation" Property does work, but only allows me to turn it 90 degrees, compared to the Rotate Sketch Objects method that   would allow me to rotate it any amount that I need to. (I'm using a wingdings 3 Arrow)

Anyway I was thinking if I could somehow use the user command "sketch text" or  " ThisApplication.CommandManager.ControlDefinitions.Item("AppTextWrapperCmd")" through Ilogic I might be able to get around my problem...

However I don't know how to convince Inventor that I left clicked inside the Sketch.

Does anyone know how to do this? Either Simulating left clicking in inventor or a work around for moving API textboxes?

If you do, that would be a lot of help.

Thank you!

(Sorry, it's my first post.)

          Ilogic Save As not working

I created a Do until loop that will run through and make all my parts for me, while reading the parameters for each part from excel. I have the user input the values in the attached pictures before running the rule. My problem is that even though it correctly reads in the parameters from excel, and i've put in message boxes to show me that the parameters are correct throughout the rule, when the part gets to the save as, it only saves out the template. So even though throughout the creation of part 1, the width shows up as 20, when I open the part afterwards, the width is back to being 50.

Before I had it set up so that instead of having a do until loop it would bring up the save as dialog with the next name on the list and all I had to do was hold down the enter key until all the parts were made. That worked, but I was really hoping to automate it so that I could be working on other things while this ran.

This is the excel it is reading from:

Replace reference file for a specific drawing view.

Hi,

I am trying to add a specific workflow into our Inventor but I am failing to do so.

 The situation

We draw pressure tanks and vessels, on these tanks there are many nozzles that are the same (components), but only vary in size.

Our workflow now is draw 1 nozzle and create a copy design, change the size and there is a new nozzle. We do this until the 3D model is finished.

Then we start to create detail drawings for these nozzles, which works quite fast, but.. (here is the problem) We copy the drawing view to another drawing, and then use change model reference to create the detail the next nozzle.

The problem

The copying to another drawing and then copying it back is too much work.. as we do this alot... So what I was attempting to is eliminating these steps.

I tried having the user select a drawing view, and then replacing the referenced file. But when I do this the reference for the other drawing view is also changed.. ughh bummer!

Here is my code ( quick code for testing) but how can I change the drawing view reference file for a specific drawing view?

        ' Get the active document
        Dim oDoc As DrawingDocument =
            _invApp.ActiveDocument

        ' Get the selected view
        Dim oDrawingView As DrawingView =
            oDoc.SelectSet.Item(1)

        ' Return the model reference
        Dim oReference As String
        oReference = oDrawingView.ReferencedDocumentDescriptor.ReferencedFileDescriptor.ReferencedFile.FullFileName

        ' Browse for a file
Dim fd As OpenFileDialog = New OpenFileDialog()
        Dim strFileName As String

        fd.Title = "Open File Dialog"
        fd.InitialDirectory = IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(oReference)
        fd.Filter = "All files (*.*)|*.*|All files (*.*)|*.*"
        fd.FilterIndex = 2
        fd.RestoreDirectory = True

        If fd.ShowDialog() = DialogResult.OK Then
            strFileName = fd.FileName
        Else
            Exit Sub
        End If

        ' Replace the reference
        oDrawingView.ReferencedDocumentDescriptor.ReferencedFileDescriptor.ReplaceReference(strFileName)

FileDescriptor.ReplaceReference Method

Parent Object: FileDescriptor

Description

Method that replaces the referenced file.

Syntax

FileDescriptor.ReplaceReference( FullFileName As String )

Parameters

Name Description
FullFileName Input string that specifies the full file name to which the reference should be switched.

Remarks

The file being replaced and the replacement file must share ancestry (i.e. they must have the same InternalName). Documents have the same internal name if they are copied using 'Save Copy As' or a file explorer copy.

Version

Introduced in Inventor version 11

Custom Bom Export to excel template

Hello All! I have been gaining a lot of knowledge from using this forum but I need some help exporting an Inventor BOM.

My employer uses a standard excel template that all manufactured parts are entered into. (We use this for standard or custom jobs). I have attached that template here. The goal is to loop through the top level assembly and place the description in the G cells starting at G4, the Rev starting at F4, and the PN starting at E4. The top level assy will be made up of subassemblies (all I-Assemblies) whose node names at the top level are 101,102,103, etc. The program has to loop thru 101, enter the node name in the column header, enter all the qtys for that section in the j column, then 102 and put the parts in K column, etc. If a bracket is used in 101 and 102 then the program has to look thru the spreadsheet and rather than enter it on a new line, it needs to place the qty in the correct column.

My first stab was to look in the help files. I found the loop portion that looks through all BomRows one item at a time. I see the ItemQuantity variable but can't seem to access it. For now I was just trying to see if I could get a simple message box to appear. (error: object required. ---didn't I declare the object a few lines before?) See bolded below.

Public Sub BOMQuery()
' Set a reference to the assembly document.
' This assumes an assembly document is active.
    Dim oDoc As AssemblyDocument
    Set oDoc = ThisApplication.ActiveDocument

    Dim FirstLevelOnly As Boolean
If MsgBox("First level only?", vbYesNo) = vbYes Then
        FirstLevelOnly = True
    Else
        FirstLevelOnly = False
    End If

' Set a reference to the BOM
    Dim oBOM As BOM
    Set oBOM = oDoc.ComponentDefinition.BOM

' Set whether first level only or all levels.
    If FirstLevelOnly Then
        oBOM.StructuredViewFirstLevelOnly = True
    Else
        oBOM.StructuredViewFirstLevelOnly = False
    End If

' Make sure that the structured view is enabled.
    oBOM.StructuredViewEnabled = True

'Set a reference to the "Structured" BOMView
    Dim oBOMView As BOMView
    Set oBOMView = oBOM.BOMViews.Item("Structured")

    Debug.Print "Item"; Tab(15); "Quantity"; Tab(30); "Part Number"; Tab(70); "Description"
    Debug.Print "----------------------------------------------------------------------------------"

    'Initialize the tab for ItemNumber
    Dim ItemTab As Long
    ItemTab = -3
    Call QueryBOMRowProperties(oBOMView.BOMRows, ItemTab)
End Sub

Private Sub QueryBOMRowProperties(oBOMRows As BOMRowsEnumerator, ItemTab As Long)
    ItemTab = ItemTab + 3
' Iterate through the contents of the BOM Rows.
    Dim i As Long
    For i = 1 To oBOMRows.Count
        ' Get the current row.
        Dim oRow As BOMRow
        Set oRow = oBOMRows.Item(i)

'Set a reference to the primary ComponentDefinition of the row
        Dim oCompDef As ComponentDefinition
        Set oCompDef = oRow.ComponentDefinitions.Item(1)
        Dim total As Long
        Set total = oRow.ItemQuantity
        MsgBox (total)
        Dim oPartNumProperty As Property
        Dim oDescripProperty As Property

If TypeOf oCompDef Is VirtualComponentDefinition Then
'Get the file property that contains the "Part Number"
'The file property is obtained from the virtual component definition
            Set oPartNumProperty = oCompDef.PropertySets _
                .Item("Design Tracking Properties").Item("Part Number")

'Get the file property that contains the "Description"
            Set oDescripProperty = oCompDef.PropertySets _
                .Item("Design Tracking Properties").Item("Description")

            Debug.Print Tab(ItemTab); oRow.ItemNumber; Tab(17); oRow.ItemQuantity; Tab(30); _
                oPartNumProperty.Value; Tab(70); oDescripProperty.Value
        Else
'Get the file property that contains the "Part Number"
'The file property is obtained from the parent
            'document of the associated ComponentDefinition.
            Set oPartNumProperty = oCompDef.Document.PropertySets _
                .Item("Design Tracking Properties").Item("Part Number")

'Get the file property that contains the "Description"
            Set oDescripProperty = oCompDef.Document.PropertySets _
                .Item("Design Tracking Properties").Item("Description")

            Debug.Print Tab(ItemTab); oRow.ItemNumber; Tab(17); oRow.ItemQuantity; Tab(30); _
                oPartNumProperty.Value; Tab(70); oDescripProperty.Value

'Recursively iterate child rows if present.
If Not oRow.ChildRows Is Nothing Then
                Call QueryBOMRowProperties(oRow.ChildRows, ItemTab)
            End If
        End If
    Next
    ItemTab = ItemTab - 3
End Sub

Any help is appreciated. (I don't expect anyone to write the code for me, I would rather get bits and pieces and stitch it together myself.) The excel portion I have no idea what to do there. I have not written any code to interact with excel from Inventor.

ps - can anyone explain what the output of this sample program is from the help files? It doesn't seem to do anything except throw a message box....

iLogic Subassembly virtual parts in being created in Top assembly

I am using the attached code, "Calc_Hole_Assembly", "VirtPart_Creation", to count holes and then create virtual parts in my iCopy subassembly for purchased parts and cut lengths of purchased material. I create the iCopy in my Top level assembly and run the code, "Run_Rules", before I save the file to update all of the subassemblies in the top level that have those rules. When I run this code, the virtual parts are being created in the top level assembly and are not updated in the subassembly.

I have attached a screencast as well of the operation. Inventor crashed on completion of running "Run_Rules" in the screencast.

I am running Inventor 2016

Thank you in advance for any help you can give!

          My Italian Summer Bucket List
Schooooools out for summer! Yes that's right. 8th of June was officially the last school day here in Italy, where the kids have about 3 months worth of summer holidays. Hugely exagerated if you ask me. Just bare minimum if you ask my son. Either way, that time needs to be at least partially filled if you don't want to go bonkers, as my son isn't yet of the age that he would rather be left alone by his parents.

This year, as one of my resolutions/wishes was to travel and experience more, I wanted to be better prepared in regards to what places to go to, where to visit, during the summer months instead of having to scramble for something last minute, which often resulted in a rut style "meh okay, it's late already let's go to our usual place".

Here are some places  that I would love to see this summer. Many of them I haven't yet been to, even tho I moved here some oh my gosh 13 years ago. It's about time, yes?

Functional Jobs: OCaml server-side developer at Ahrefs (Full-time)

What we need

Ahrefs is looking for a backend developer with a deep understanding of networks, distributed systems, OS fundamentals and taste for simple and efficient architectural designs. Our backend is implemented mostly in OCaml and some C++, as such proficiency in OCaml is very much appreciated, otherwise a strong inclination to intensively learn OCaml in a short term will be required. Understanding of functional programming in general and/or experience with other FP languages (F#,Haskell,Scala,Scheme, etc) will help a lot. Knowledge of C++ and/or Rust is a plus.

Every day the candidate will have to deal with:

  • 10+ petabytes of live data
  • OCaml
  • linux
  • git

The ideal candidate is expected to:

  • Independently deal with bugs, schedule tasks and investigate code
  • Make argumented technical choice and take responsibility for it
  • Understand the whole technology stack at all levels : from network and userspace code to OS internals and hardware
  • Handle full development cycle of a single component - i.e. formalize task, write code and tests, setup and support production (devops), resolve user requests
  • Approach problems with practical mindset and suppress perfectionism when time is a priority
  • Write flexible maintainable code and adapt to post-launch requirements’ tweaks

These requirements stem naturally from our approach to development with fast feedback cycle, highly-focused personal areas of responsibility and strong tendency to vertical component splitting.

Who we are

Ahrefs runs an internet-scale bot that crawls the whole Web 24/7, storing huge volumes of information to be indexed and structured in a timely fashion. Backend system is powered by a custom petabyte-scale distributed key-value storage to accommodate all that data coming in at high speed. The storage system is implemented in OCaml with thin performance-critical low-level part in C++. On top of that Ahrefs is building various analytical services for end-users.

We are a small team and strongly believe in better technology leading to better solutions for real-world problems. We worship functional languages and static typing, extensively employ code generation and meta-programming, value code clarity and predictability, and are constantly seeking to automate repetitive tasks and eliminate boilerplate, guided by DRY and following KISS. If there is any new technology that will make our life easier - no doubt, we'll give it a try. We rely heavily on opensource code (as the only viable way to build maintainable system) and contribute back, see e.g. https://github.com/ahrefs . It goes without saying that our team is all passionate and experienced OCaml programmers, ready to lend a hand and explain that intricate ocamlbuild rule or track a CPU bug.

Our motto is "first do it, then do it right, then do it better".

What you get

We provide:

  • Competitive salary
  • Informal and thriving atmosphere
  • First-class workplace equipment (hardware, tools)
  • Medical insurance

Transect tussle: CodeNEXT changes might not be as dramatic as reported

City planners throw a CodeNEXT curveball; Transect zones picked apart
Update: City officials dispute the Austin Monitor's report, saying that transect zones remain a part of CodeNEXT. The original story is below. A major component of CodeNEXT — Austin's huge revamp of its land development code and permitting process — may go away. City planners, according to the Austin Monitor, are thinking of ditching so-called transect zones from the draft plan. Within the 1,130-plus pages of the draft CodeNEXT, perhaps the most significant update would have been a shift away…

          Hawkeye: Worst Fight Club Ever

Project Mayhem: Venice Chapter

Come one, come all to the thing we can’t talk about…ah screw it, fight club! That’s right, on August 2, return to a blood and sweat soaked Venice basement reminiscent of the Hotel California to work out your frustrations, and then maybe never leave. Hosting, as always, is creator Kelly Thompson and her partner in creation, Leonardo Romero.

Location: We plead the fifth.

Time: When the need for violence arises.

Rules:

  1. Do not talk about fight club.

*We understand that by making this you probably think we broke this rule, however, see rule 3.

  1. No rules! We don’t play fair.

*This is fight club, not whine about someone blinding you with dirt club.

  1. We do what we want.

*We, the people running the club, do what we want. You, do whatever we say. It’s the golden rule: He who runs the fight club makes the rules.

A word from our Sponsor:

Introducing our newest gladiator: Kate Bishop! That’s right, super hero Hawkeye has joined our ranks and will be fighting her way through not only our seasoned champions, but also some heavy daddy issues. Poor thing got caught up tracking down someone else’s father in her latest case, but it’s her own she’s really after.

“We’re finding Kate in a much more emotional state than we’re used to finding her,” says Thompson. “She really grew up with her father mostly believing there were some aberrations there but she thought he was a really good man in general. So peeling back those layers and finding out that’s not really true not only calls into question things about him, but it makes her question things about herself.”

Looks like daddy Hawkeye may just end up on his daughter’s super villain hit list…talk about your family drama. Good thing she has come to us in her time of need. It’s time to punch the pain away, Kate.

“Kate is a very good fighter so even if she doesn’t look like the guys who are down there in these cages, she’s going to do well in a one on one fight. She’s incredibly smart, she’s well trained, and she’s a super hero,” warns Thompson. But let’s not forget that, that means she must stick too a code, she can’t just hurt people willy-nilly. Sounds like prime time for you newbies to make your mark, so come on down!

Reviews:

StreetFighter212: YAAASSSS!! I’M GONNA WRECK YOU WUSSIES!! COME AT ME BRAH!

Deadpooled: Kate is going to wipe the floor with you.

Clint4life: Whatever, she’s not even the real Hawkeye.

Cagedfighter16: Is anybody reading this?! COME AND RESCUE ME!!! They’re keeping me in a cage and I don’t want to be here!!!

TheRealKateBishop: Okay I was playing along with this at first but now it’s on. I’m not the sad seal at the zoo, for one thing I can’t balance a ball on my nose…I’m busting everyone out, finding Molly’s dad and taking you creeps down!

Deadpooled: Oh snap!

Be sure to grab seats for Kate’s fight club debut and find out if she solves her case or gets lost in a whirlwind of fists and emotions in HAWKEYE #9 out August 2, written by Kelly Thompson with art by Leonardo Romero.

Entering Contest of Champions: Punisher 2099

Bullets and blades blast and slice across Battlerealm as Jake Gallows, the Punisher of 2099, brute forces his way into “Marvel Contest of Champions” as the game’s 100th character.

We talked to Kabam Art Director Gabriel Frizzera and Character Designer Simon Cameron about what makes this particular Punisher tick like a time bomb.

Marvel.com: I gotta ask, how much effort does it take for The Collector to reach through the past and future to snatch up a specimen?

Gabriel Frizzera: The Punisher 2099 was captured in the original batch of Champions for The Contest. But it wasn’t necessary for Collector to reach through time, since Jake Gallows had travelled back to the 21st century to execute Carnage, as part of an initiative by the future Hydra regime to punish criminals in different timelines. They’re very proactive at the Secret Empire— they won’t let small things like the space-time continuum get in the way of their punishment!

Marvel.com: And what makes Jake Gallows so special that he gets to fight it out in The Contest?

Gabriel Frizzera: Gallows was one of the characters Marvel allowed us to redesign for the CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS comic book, and appeared briefly in the last issue—before being quickly dispatched by Frank Castle. We had plans to put him in the game for a while, and when the opportunity to do a Secret Empire tie-in came about, we decided to have him as the villain. Turns out he’s also our 100th playable character, so it worked out great that he’s one of our original designs!

Marvel.com: 100 characters is a super cool milestone, and outside of Angela, this may be my favorite looking combatant in “Contest of Champions.” Seriously, this Punisher looks absolutely awesome! What can you tell us about his design?

Gabriel Frizzera: We are fond of his ‘90s garish outfit and gadgets, but we wanted to push him to look more like a “futuristic shock-police on steroids.” The central piece of the design is the chest skull made of knives and guns—which teleport into his hands; not a second to spare in the future. His whole arsenal is white to contrast with the black and red suit, but also to speak to the nature of 2099’s technology: all weapons would be freshly formed and reconfigured on the spot by nanotechnology. His original concept had way more weapons—like mag-blades on his arms and an electro-baton—and a tactical helmet, which ended up having to be cut for memory reasons. But we kept his bad-ass disintegrating gun and “Grenazers”!

Marvel.com: Aside from his bad ass new look, what sets him apart from Frank Castle?

Gabriel Frizzera: We joke in the office that Jake Gallows makes Frank Castle look like a soft-hearted hippie! We had a lot of fun writing the contrast between the two, the same way other writers love to contrast Frank Castle among more “straight” heroes like Captain America. In the story, when placed between Jake Gallows’ and Steve Rogers’ radically different views of justice, Frank Castle is forced to admit he might be a bit closer to Cap than the fanatic Punisher 2099. It was fun for me to write dialogue where Gallows calls Castle a “half-measure,” the same way Castle called Matt Murdock [“Marvel’s Daredevil” on Netflix]. That shows how far Punisher 2099 has strayed into villainous territory.

Marvel.com: Tell me a little about Punisher 2099’s abilities…

Simon Cameron: Punisher 2099 gets much of his strength from his Nano-Tech, which is powered by the Nano-Tech Battery. This charge builds over time, and his Special 1 gives him an Overcharge Passive effect, giving him additional Nano-Tech charge for a few seconds. This charge is spent by a number of automatically triggered effects—things like: Triggering a Heal Block on an Opponent when they trigger a Regeneration Buff, Draining the Charge to Regenerate Punisher 2099 if his Health drops below a threshold, or adding a Stun effect to his Heavy Attack. He also enters an Overdrive mode if his Charge reaches 100%. This drains his Charge over time, but grants him additional Attack, and reduces the amount of Power his Opponent gains when they’re struck by Punisher’s attacks.

Marvel.com: And what’s Retribution 2099 all about?

Simon Cameron: Retribution 2099 is Punisher’s Signature Ability. It lets him start the fight with his Nano-Tech Battery partially charged; it also adds a new automatically triggered effect to spend his Nano-Tech Charge on. This ability triggers when his opponent hits full power, draining a small amount of it, and power locking them for a couple seconds. It’s a little like a Special 3 get out of jail free card.

Marvel.com: And when can we hope to bring the Punisher’s weapon mastery to bear on the bad guys?

Simon Cameron: Punisher 2099 opens fire on The Contest June 29!

Spider-Man Returns as Vulture Attacks ‘Marvel Avengers Academy’

Spider-Man and some of his spectacular friends swing back to “Marvel Avengers Academy” as Peter’s other school—the Midtown School of Science and Technology—prepares for their homecoming celebration. But the villainous Vulture has other ideas! He launches an attack on both learning institutions and it’ll take everyone at the Academy—plus some new pals Peter’s made over the last year—to thwart his plan and save the dance.

We sat down with Allen Warner, Lead Narrative Designer at TinyCo, to learn everything Spidey brings with him in this latest event.

Marvel.com: What’s bringing the web-head and his spider-powered crew back to “Avengers Academy”?

Allen Warner: At the end of our previous Multiverse event, we learned that someone had been scavenging Maestro’s collection of “trophies” for tech and weapons, along with various labs and superhuman battle sites across New York. Nick Fury tasked Spider-Man with finding the perpetrator, and he’s coming back to report what he’s found. It also coincides with the homecoming dance at the Midtown School of Science and Technology, so Spidey will be bringing the party to Avengers Academy, and bugging everyone for dating advice.

Marvel.com: Why is Vulture so set on laying waste to Midtown Sci-Tech and the Academy?

Allen Warner: Vulture is a brilliant scientist and inventor, but was turned down by both Avengers Academy and Midtown Sci-Tech after being accused of stealing other students’ tech and ideas to further his own goals. He feels like his fellow super-scientists don’t respect him, and the entire world is conspiring against him, so he starts using tech and weapons found in various superhuman battle sites to rebuild and repurpose mechanical monstrosities into things like an army of Vulture-ized Octobots. He wants power and respect, and he’ll destroy everyone and everything at both Avengers Academy and Midtown Sci-Tech to get it.

Marvel.com: The event district gives us a peek at Peter’s life outside the Academy; what new things will players discover?

Allen Warner: The event district is Midtown Sci-Tech itself, decked out for homecoming. It’s completely different than anything we’ve done before, and really cool because it brings a lot of fun, school flavor the campus. Unfortunately, Vulture shows up to ruin the party, so he’s perched atop the school with his prisoners and minions, plotting his attack on Avengers Academy.

Marvel.com: And the event building carves out a space for one particular Spider-heroine…

Allen Warner: Yes, we’re big Spider-Gwen fans over here too, so we wanted her to share the spotlight. The event building is a multi-tiered punk rock venue where Gwen and some surprise guests are going to perform, and throw their own brand of homecoming bash. The building represents Gwen really well with its gleaming white exteriors, colorful neon blue and pink graffiti, a unique stage and dance floor, and some other really cool surprises.

Marvel.com: How will players battle Vulture and his refurbished Octobot army?

Allen Warner: Players will battle Vulture’s tech on the campus as a team, while battling Vulture himself, and a couple of foes he’s tricked into fighting by his side. Part of his plan is to create chaos and keep the heroes busy by setting Symbiotes loose in New York, so your heroes will also battle in the streets of New York to protect the city.

Marvel.com: What new faces will join the Academy—and the fight against Vulture—as Peter calls on more of his friends from across the multiverse?

Allen Warner: A really cool collection of various Spider-Heroes, amazing friends, and one grumpy newspaper publisher. Players will be able to recruit Silver Sable, Spider-Girl, Agent Venom, J. Jonah Jameson, and Silk. J. Jonah Jameson was really popular as a cameo character during our first Spider-Man event, and I’d forgotten how fun he is to write until this event came around. His personality is great to bounce off of the students, and I can’t wait for everyone to see his visual upgrades. Silver Sable is one of my favorite Spidey characters. She looks amazing, and is a cool fit alongside some of the spies and mercenaries running around the school. Agent Venom is one of the most awesome Symbiotes, and he brings something completely unique to the table, and of course [his alter ego] Flash [Thompson] and Peter Parker have a classic rivalry. Spider-Girl and Silk are two of the coolest spider-powered characters in my opinion. They both were very close to making the cut in our first Spider-Man event, so I’m really excited to see them finally make it into “Avengers Academy.” As always, our art and animation teams have knocked it out of the park with everyone’s designs and actions, and I think players are going to love having all of these characters at their school.

Marvel.com: And there must be some cool new outfits on the way as well…

Allen Warner: Definitely. There are new outfits for Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, Mary Jane, Venom, and Doctor Octopus. It’s a cool mix of some iconic looks, some seldom-seen but awesome outfits from the comics, and a couple of classics given fun Avengers Academy-style re-imaginings. It’s a really cool group that I think people will love.

Marvel.com: With the second Guardians of the Galaxy event, players were able to recruit the heroes from the previous event; will we see something similar here?

Allen Warner: Yes, we got a really positive response from players during the Guardians 2 event who enjoyed that opening week featuring characters from the original event because it gave them a first or second chance at characters they’d missed out on before, so we decided to do a similar thing here. The opening week will give new and longtime players the chance to get one of the outfits and a few of the characters from the original event, as well as a new character and outfit. Over the course of the event, players will have a chance to get every single character and outfit from the original Spider-Man event, including Miles Morales, Mysterio, Black Cat, Electro, Green Goblin, and many more.

Marvel.com: Once the Vulture is thwarted, what new adventures will players be able to look forward to?

Allen Warner: We’re going to find that Vulture isn’t the only person who’s secretly holding a grudge against Avengers Academy. He’s been sharing his scavenged tech and weapons with some faraway enemies, and they’re ready to go to war.

          Black Bolt: Royal Likeness

Over the years, Blackagar Boltagon has filled many roles: leader of the Inhumans, husband, father, intergalactic ruler—and now, prisoner! Writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Christian Ward set up quite a challenge for the one-time king when they launched BLACK BOLT a few months back: escape from an epic space prison!

Teamed up with the likes of Absorbing Man, Black Bolt continues to figure out how to flee the seemingly inescapable jail in the stars so he can find his way back to his family. We talked with Ward about designing Black Bolt’s cage, working on the silent hero, and making his mark on a childhood favorite.

Marvel.com: This book has definitely taken Black Bolt in some unexpected directions. How has it been crafting these stories with Saladin so far?

Christian Ward: I’m drawn to stories I can’t predict. I think that’s one reason why shows like “Breaking Bad” and “Game of Thrones” are so enjoyable. Reading Saladin’s scripts for BLACK BOLT [has] had those same unexpected elements and I’ve loved reading them. Bringing a story to life that you’re already enjoying in its script form is easy. I have a background in creator-owned comics; I’m used to working on books I’m personally invested in and working on BLACK BOLT with Saladin has felt no different.

I think he would agree that we’ve really clicked working on BLACK BOLT. It’s been an absolute joy and I feel very lucky to be working with Saladin. I felt like we’re telling one story together infused with all these personal elements. I definitely feel like we’re trying to say something with BLACK BOLT, whilst remembering it’s a super hero comic and it should also be a lot of fun. Even with his first comic, Saladin’s going to be [among] many peoples’ very favorite writers. He’s certainly one of mine now and hopefully this will be the first of many projects we do together.

Marvel.com: The story mixes elements from classic prison break tales with sci-fi and super heroes. Do you enjoy playing with those pieces and building new structures with them?

Christian Ward: I do! Lots of my previous projects—like ODY-C for instance—have been about clashing genres together. I love the tension you get from mixing disparate ingredients. With BLACK BOLT, as well as the genres you mentioned, I’ve been having fun approaching parts like a Gothic horror, not just with the scenery and the lighting but also trying to use page layouts to make it feel foreboding or claustrophobic.

There have been pages where I’ve tried to make the panel [borders] feel as much of the prison bars as the ones I’ve actually drawn. Becoming narrower and narrower as our characters are contained or crushed within them. It’s been fun to allow the different genres, like horror, influence how certain elements of the book look and even let each issue feel a little different. For instance, in issue #4 I’ve been playing with formal nine-panel grids and half tone textures as a way to exaggerate the old school comic book-ness of the issue. It keeps me on my toes and hopefully it keeps the [book] exciting from issue to issue for the reader.

Marvel.com: You’re setting much of the action inside of this jail. How much of it did you have designed ahead of time?

Christian Ward: Lots of great design is about tension and what Saladin had in mind for our prison was perfect to play to that idea. He had this idea that it would be equal parts Victorian gaol and [Jack] Kirby techno, so for every stone pillar there has to be this contrasting piece of insane, impossible machinery.

I read about Panopticon so I knew I wanted there to be eyes everywhere because big floating over-watching eyes are always creepy and it had to feel huge, I wanted Black Bolt to feel insignificant there. I certainly didn’t design a physical place like an architect would, rather I spent a lot of time thinking about how it would feel, or maybe how the inmates would feel being held there. I wanted the prison to feel intangible, like a monster glimpsed in the darkness, a place that was ever changing. Somewhere it would be impossible to get your footing or stay sane. An M.C. Escher drawing come to life.

Marvel.com: BLACK BOLT has incorporated some interesting characters from Absorbing Man to Death’s Head. How has it been putting your own spin on them and making them work in this story?

Christian Ward: The first thing I have to say is what a huge and continuing honor it is to be drawing these characters that so many greats have drawn before me. It’s very exciting to, as you say, put a spin on them. It’s a tricky balancing act to honor what’s come before and try to shine a different light on them. Hopefully success comes from loving the characters in the first place. For instance, when I was a teenager Death’s Head was my favorite character growing up in the UK. He was my Hulk, my Spider-Man, my X-Men. He was my number one. So when I came to design my take on him I let that love guide the design. What I love about the character—that’s what I bring to the forefront.

And oh boy, Absorbing Man! I love drawing Carl. This might be Black Bolt’s book, but I think Crusher’s the heart of it. It’s been so much fun to draw him not as a bad guy, but as a man, and try and make him feel real. Whereas I’m trying to keep Bolt at arm’s length I really want readers to feel very empathetic towards Crusher. I’ve really grown to love the guy so I hope that’s coming through.

Marvel.com: Does Black Bolt’s silence offer any particular challenges when you’re working from panel to panel?

Christian Ward: It’s a huge challenge. I remember reading about the difference between TV, movie, and stage acting and the “volume” in which actors have to project or emote in each. Unlike in theater, for instance, on a giant movie screen the smallest of facial movements can be read. I’m aiming for giant movie screen acting here. I’ve always enjoyed comic book acting and it’s huge fun to try and convey all the subtleties of Bolt’s face. I really wanted to have him feel reserved and withdrawn from us but that as the story progressed the wall that he’d built up around himself—his own personal inner prison wall—would break down and we’d see more of those emotions showing on his face and in his body language. You know, as much as I love the big cosmic moments of the book, it was the challenge of drawing Bolt that made me take the project on and I’m having the time of my life with it.

BLACK BOLT #3 breaks into stores on July 5, with issue #4 following on August 2, thanks to Saladin Ahmed and Christian Ward.

          RE: Is it just me...
No, it's not just you, there's very little in the article that seems to relate to its title. Shared source for RISC OS seems to me to be too little, too late. It's also currently fiction, since there's no source published. I'm not really convinced that anything can be done for RISC OS to bring back users. There's several reasons for this... 1) RISC OS is closely tied to a single processor ARM architecture, which inherently restricts its speed, since there are no 3GHz ARM chips. Performance will therefore never be competitive without major re-writes of most of the OS. 2) The hardware cost, as a minority platform, also makes things prohibitive. Hardware price will therefore never be even remotely competitive. 3) Porting to a different platform is impractical (at best) owing to a reliance on ARM code. You'd either need ARM emulation integrated into the kernel, or you'd loose compatibility. 4) Running under emulation also isn't practical as a means of survival - you'll inevitably gradually lose users to the host OS.
          RE: Is it just me...
Adding features to the OS will not "drag ex-users back". The real underlining problem is in the groups of people trying to create/support the OS. I dumped my Amiga because not only was it not improving, but they were going in the direction of expensive hardware that was not flexible in what it supported, plus the old 'add features till it breaks' approach that told me they were lost without a firm goal. Worse there was not even a working base of code, rather two different code bases being developed at the same time that were not compatible with each other. Presently I am a BeOS fan looking forward to Haiku. Progress has been slow, but it has been steady too. It is important to note that all the other BeOS clone projects that planned to out-BeOS BeOS collapsed under the weight of their ambitions, while the ports to Linux stalled on the amount of interfacing code needed. Haiku planned for a single, reachable goal and is still going strong. Amiga, RiscOS and others main problems do not seem to be in the nature of the OSes but rather the in the nature of the people controlling the development.

          RE[2]: Is it just me...
1) Depends what you mean by 'speed'. The current machines are 'responsive' in ways that more modern machines are not. For example, as nothing ever gets swapped out to disk, there are typically no pauses when the user makes a menu selection. There is no disk thrashing under normal application use as everything always in RAM. In terms of raw multi-media crunching bandwidth, I agree, the ARMs just aren't comparable with a top of the line desktop Intel chip. Having said that, for something like 'movie playback' hardware MPEG could perhaps do a better job anyway. 2) That neededn't be the case, if the OS were more open. As I said in the article, consumer grade ARM powered hardware is everywhere. 3) RISCOS itself is fast. Perhaps JIT emulated ARM code could be viewed as a sort of 'byte code' in which the OS is written. Speed critical parts always be written in native code. With the commercial JIT powered RO emulator (that I admit that I have never even seen running), I bet some UI operations are faster than the same operations on the underlying Windows PC. 4) Probably.

Alert Notice 585: Monitoring of Evryscope targets requested for follow-up

June 30, 2017: Dr. Octavi Fors (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and colleagues have requested AAVSO observers' assistance in following up on some targets from the Evryscope survey.

Dr. Fors writes: "The Evryscope team is running a survey of transiting planetesimals around white dwarfs (WDs). To date, WD1145+017, discovered by Kepler, is the only WD found to have disintegrating transiting Ceres-mass objects. The debris/planetesimals transits candidates found by Evryscope need to be confirmed with V or R Johnson filtered, higher SNR (~50) and faster (~25-60s) cadence photometry than Evryscope. We encourage AAVSO observers to follow up these debris/planetesimals transits candidates.

"As a by-product of this survey, Evryscope is also detecting WDs and hot sub dwarfs which show variability of all kinds which we encourage to follow up too."

The first set of targets in this Evryscope-AAVSO follow-up collaboration is given in the list below. The targets will become increasingly observable over the coming weeks and months. Please add them to your programs if possible as soon as they become observable from your location.

Target

R.A.(2000)   Dec(2000)   Range

Type
EC 01541-1409 01 56 31.90 -13 54 26.4 12.29-12.33V 4-5 (u) V361HYA (very rapidly pulsating hot sub-dwarf B star)
GD 1068 02 00 13.26 -17 28 43.8 11.95-12.13V 5-6 High proper motion star**; R (close binary with strong reflection)
HE 0218-4447 02 20 24.49 -44 33 28.5 12.89-?V 2 runs x 5 Variability type unknown
HE 0218-3437 02 20 59.77 -34 23 35.3 13.39-13.40V 2 runs x 5 ELL (rotating ellipsoidal close binary)
2MASS J05144393-0848064 05 14 43.93 -08 48 06.4 11.21-?V 4-5 (u) Hot subdwarf
ASAS J102322-3737.0 10 23 21.89 -37 36 59.9 11.61-11.83V 4 EA+R
JL 94 22 01 52.22 -75 52 04.4 13.03-?V 2 runs x 6 Hot subdwarf
EC 23073-6905 23 10 35.60 -68 49 30.5 12.59-?V 4-5 (u) Variability type unknown

*Number of hours each target should be observed in  a single night. (u) means debris-like targets which need uninterrupted photometry for 4-5 hrs.
**GD 1068 proper motion values (mas/yr) are RA -20.7, Dec -40.5

Dr. Fors adds that "Transits/dips due to debris-like/planetesimal eclipses around WDs have periods of 4-5hrs (at least in the case of WD1145+017). Thus, we would like to obtain uninterrupted (except for readout time) photometry runs of 4-5hrs imaging the same candidate. If target visibility prevents doing so, at least 2.5hr-runs would be valuable; 2 or 3 runs of 2.5 hrs each would be great."

Johnson V photometry is preferred; if V is not possible, R is okay. Remember that when you are submitting your data to the AAVSO, the letter 'R' stands for Cousins R; 'RJ' stands for Johnson R.

Cadences of 25-60 sec should allow resolution of a debris disk or period determination for the variables on the list. A SNR>50 or higher is requested for all targets.

Charts: Finder charts with comparison star sequences may be created using the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP). For GD 1068, a 'D' or 'E' scale chart will need to be created to see the comp stars. Also, observers are reminded that GD 1068 is a high proper motion star.

Submit observations: Please submit observations to the AAVSO International Database using the names given in the target list, making sure to include spaces between parts of a name as given.

This campaign is being monitored on the AAVSO Observing Campaigns webpage and is being followed on the Campaigns and Observation Reports Forum at https://www.aavso.org/evryscope-campaign-2017.

          Observing Campaigns - new page

[Note: if you are seeking confirmation of what you believe is a recent discovery, click on the link in the box at the right.  For general inquiries, please use our Contact form and select "General Observing" as the subject.]

AAVSO Observing Campaigns are special projects concentrating on one star or a number of stars for a given researcher and for a specific research program.  Campaigns are designed to obtain a specific set of data or fulfill a specific research objective, and should be (a) within the capabilities of a significant number of AAVSO observers, and (b) last for a finite length of time. When warrented, a campaign may be extended in order to obtain additional data.

The AAVSO will issue a call for observations at its discretion, but any well-justified program is eligible for AAVSO support.  If you have questions about establishing an AAVSO Observing Campaign, or if you believe your research program would benefit from the participation of the AAVSO observer community, please contact the AAVSO Campaign Coordinator.  The AAVSO can assist with campaigns beyond announcing them; if your project requires substantial assistance of AAVSO staff, we may request grant support for staff activities.  Also, please consider becoming a member if you are not one already!

An observing campaign is announced to our observers via an AAVSO Alert Notice. Please go to the Alert Notices page for more information and for the list of Alert Notices issued to date. Observers learn about campaign-related observing targets via the Alert Notices and the AAVSO Target Tool.

[Note: if you are inquiring about establishing your own personal observing program, about observations in general, or in learning more about the AAVSO and its data, please use our general Contact form.]

For Observers: Please read the requests for observations in full, and use your own best judgment as to whether your equipment and abilities are well-matched to the specific project.  When in doubt please contact AAVSO HQ for guidance and recommendations.  If you are an instrumental observer, we strongly recommend that you calibrate your data and transform all photometry to a standard system!  For some projects this will be required, but it is good practice in general.

Please visit our observer resources page to find our Visual, CCD, and DSLR observing manuals, guides to photometry, and other tools to help you assess whether a campaign is a good match for you!

For Researchers: Any research effort requires focused and enthusiastic leadership, and the leader of the observing campaign should be you, the researcher.  The more you interact with the observer community, the more likely it is that you will attract observers and obtain good data.  Ideally, the AAVSO's role is merely to issue a call for observations, establish communications between you and the observers, and coordinate the collection of data; your role should be to motivate and encourage observers who participate in your work, analyze the data, and publish the results. The AAVSO online forum on Campaigns is the most direct way to reach the most observers. Also, it is required that
the work of observers be properly recognized; if any individual observers contribute data that are critically important to the research, we strongly encourage you to offer coauthorship to the observers on any resulting papers.

Please visit our Research portal to find more information about how the AAVSO and its observers can aid you in your research.

The Fair Representation Act has been introduced to Congress

I’m sponsoring the Fair Representation Act because Congress is broken. It is hyper-partisan. It is far too polarized. The FRA creates a structure where members of Congress are incentivized to work together. This is the right thing to do to give voters the strong voice that they deserve in our elections.

--Congressman Don Beyer (VA-08)

On June 26, 2017, Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA) introduced H.R. 3057: The Fair Representation Act. He was joined by co-sponsors Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Ro Khanna (D-CA). This is a historic moment. The Fair Representation Act is the most comprehensive approach to reforming congressional elections in United States history. It would truly realize the vision of the House of Representatives as “The People’s House.”

The Fair Representation Act

FairVote has called for expanding the use of multi-winner ranked choice voting in United States elections since its founding 25 years ago. Ranked choice voting can replace the broken, zero-sum, winner-take-all system - in which the biggest group of voters in a district are the only ones earning representation - with fair representation for all. In this era of fierce partisan divisions, nowhere needs this change more than the House of Representatives.

RCV-ballot-09.pngUnder the Fair Representation Act, every state would use ranked choice voting to elect its Representatives. Voters would be free to rank their choices without fear of “spoilers.” Instead of only one candidate winning with the most votes, several candidates would win based on how many votes they earn. For example, in a state like Oklahoma or Connecticut that elects 5 winners, 17% of voters can elect 1 of the 5 winners; 34% of voters can elect 2 of the 5 winners; and so on. A majority of voters can always elect a majority of seats, and everyone earns their fair share.

States that elect up to 5 winners will not need any districts at all. Larger states will use districts, but the districts will elect 3, 4, or 5 winners each. That means that a state like Massachusetts that elects 9 Representatives will divide into equal thirds, with each of the three districts electing 3 winners with ranked choice voting. To adopt a district map, these states will form independent redistricting commissions composed of ordinary state citizens (not politicians or lobbyists) who will operate transparently and hold hearings around the state to find the district map that makes the most sense for their state.

The use of ranked choice voting in multi-winner elections will transform the House of Representatives. The current system only allows the biggest group of voters in each district to win representation, all other voices are silenced. As a result, there are millions of voters who prefer Democrats stuck in safe Republican districts and millions of voters who prefer Republicans stuck in safe Democratic districts, women and people of color are under-represented, and everyone has too few choices. The Fair Representation Act can elevate those voices, giving them more power to elect candidates they support and who will go to Congress to work for them.

A Historic Moment

Under the Constitution, Congress has the responsibility to act when our federal elections are not working. It has acted on that responsibility many times in the past, passing laws changing how we elect Congress in 1842 (requiring single-winner districts), 1872 (equal populations per representative), 1901 (requiring that districts be “compact”), 1929 (repealing the requirement to use districts), and 1967 (re-imposing the requirement to use districts). It has been 50 years since Congress has acted in this arena, even as the current system fails to deliver on the promise of a representative House.

Representative Beyer has shown tremendous leadership in holding Congress to its constitutional responsibilities. The attention it attracted from the public demonstrates the hunger that voters have for a more empowering system. FairVote livestreamed Rep. Beyer’s press conference, which was viewed over 44,000 times and ultimately reached over 554,000 people.

https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FFairVoteReform%2Fvideos%2F1622439381102173%2F&show_text=0&width=560560315border:none;overflow:hiddenno0truetrue

The day after the bill’s introduction, Rep. Beyer published an opinion piece in the Washington Post explaining why he introduced the Act. It begins “Democracy is in crisis. Even as the country is deeply divided along class and ideological lines, it seems to be unified in its frustration with our current brand of politics.” Other voices have also weighed in on the need for the Fair Representation Act, including:

As more media coverage happens in the coming days and weeks, we'll add it to the list on our website.

You Can Help the Fair Representation Act Gain Momentum

Now that the vehicle for transforming elections to the U.S. House of Representatives is a bill in Congress, you can help to move the conversation forward. Contact your Representative today to ask them to support the Fair Representation Act. You can find your Representative here, and email them a letter supporting the Fair Representation Act. A sample letter is provided here. You also could consider calling your Member, which increases their likelihood of responding. Better still would be to form a group to have a meeting with your Member and their district office staff.

Finally, we want to keep adding names to our petition in support of the Act. We currently have over 1500 signatures. Please consider sharing the petition online and drawing people’s attention to our new video and our public resources, at FairRepresentation.com

Spirent supports testing of New H3C 100 GBE switch
Spirent Communications, a supplier of network test and measurement solutions, announced that it supported New H3C in conducting what is believed to be the highest density 100 Gbit/s data centre switch test.

Spirent also announced it had partnered with the China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI) to demonstrate automated testing of virtual core networks.

100 Gbit/s switch testing

The test, completed by Spirent and the New H3C Group and moderated by independent test lab Network Test, demonstrated the line-rate forwarding capacity and hyper-scale IP route announcement capacity of the H3C S12500X-AF chassis loaded with 100 Gbit/s ports and achieving a density of 768 x 100G ports per chassis. The S12500X-AF switch can support 48 x 100 Gbit/s QSFP28 pluggable optical modules per slot.

The test involved Spirent TestCenter and the N11U chassis, representing Spirent's flagship network performance test solution, equipped with the high density dX3 12-port 100 Gbit/s test modules designed to verify next-generation data centre architectures and routers.

For the testing, Spirent TestCenter generated 100 Gbit/s line-rate transaction traffic of various frame lengths and provided packet loss, latency, jitter, frame sequence, code errors and FCS error analytics to reflect the quality of transmission in real time.

The Spirent dX3 quint-speed test module can support twelve 100 or 40 Gbit/s ports per slot, 25 x 50 Gbit/s ports, or 48 x 25/10 Gbit/s ports per slot. It also supports key interface features such as FEC, auto-negotiation and Link Training. The module can be used to verify data plane QoS for hyper-dense network devices at line-rate, and for testing complex routing, data centre and access protocols on switches and routers.

Virtual core network testing

Separately Spirent announced a collaboration with the China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI) to demonstrate automated testing of virtual core networks at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai. Spirent noted that the demonstration is part of a joint effort to develop a methodology for automated testing of the functionality and performance of the China Mobile TIC (Telecom Infrastructure Cloud).

The partners plans to incorporate the test methodology into an automated testing system developed by CMRI to speed testing of services in operational virtual core networks and to form part of the complete vEPC environment developed by CMRI.

At MWC, Spirent has provided the test engines for the demonstration, including the virtualised mobile core network emulation and performance testing tool, Landslide Virtual, and the automated testing platform, iTest. The solutions automate performance and functionality tests used to develop, spin-up and monitor the vEPC. In addition, devops models have been developed for the test methodologies, allowing tests to be automated and incorporated into the virtualised network.

Bob & Gene – If This World Were Mine (+2 Bonus Tracks)
Image: 1610565 Ten years ago we were excited to release an archival collection of the sweetest soul from upstate New York in the 1960s, BOB & GENE’S IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE.... The beautifully packaged LP sold out quickly and has remained out-of-print ever since. It’s stature has grown over the years and is, these days, a desirable but hard-to-find record for fans of sweet soul.

So to respond to the demand of soul fans worldwide we’re releasing a remastered pressing of IF THIS WORLD WAS MINE... for all of those who missed out on this sensational album the first time around, this time with TWO bonus cuts.

In 1967, two teenage friends, Bobby Nunn and Eugene Copland, were the stars of Mo Do Records, a Buffalo, NY label run by Bobby’s dad, William Nunn. As BOB & GENE they recorded several sides for the label along with other local gospel and soul artists and the dozen or so 45s on Mo Do play back with unconventional humanity and anomalous presence.

William’s dream of a Bob & Gene album would never be realised in his lifetime, but in February 2007 we jumped at the chance to pull together these sweet and soulful recordings into an album that’s remained a Daptone favorite ever since.

A decade later and we’re thrilled that it’s back in the racks at your favorite purveyor of soulful platters.

KEY SELLING POINTS:
• Remastered with two new songs not previously available on the original version, “I Really Love You” and “It’s Not What You Know (It’s Who You Know).”
• Original pressing from 2007 has been out-of-print and heavily sought-after for over 5 years.
• Includes MP3 download code.

The darken and lighten effects on rollover are the css rollover styles I chose to include in the plugin for simplicity as they work nicely on almost all designs. There’s not the option to customise with a specific rollover colour in the plugin settings itself, however you could override using CSS. Target the CSS selector #ssb-container ul li a:hover

          PARIS RIVERSIDE RESTAURANT
Registration Deadline: Sep 30, 2017; Submission Deadline: Sep 30, 2017

Paris and the entire country of France is world-famous for its cuisine, with a non-exhaustive list of delicacies and culinary systems. The culinary reputation of Paris is very rich, cultured and diverse. French food culture,  according to UNESCO, is important for 'bringing people together to enjoy the art of good eating and drinking' and the power to create 'togetherness, the pleasure of taste, and the balance between human beings and the products of nature'.

French food culture includes such wonders as the croissant, éclair, bouillon, crepe, and, of course, the baguette. Wine (there are as many types of wines as there are regions in France), bread (usually eaten in some form with each meal) and cheese (there are over 400 types of cheese in France made from all types of milk, including goat) are the staples of French food culture and French life.

The word and idea of a restaurant, which really came into modern times at the end of the French Revolution when the nouveau riche (newly rich) had more money to spend, come from French. From cafes to bistros, the world owes a lot to the French for the commercialization of specialty foods and making them available to the public. The first Parisian restaurant was founded by Beauvilliers in 1782 in the Rue de Richelieu, called the Grande Taverne de Londres. He introduced the novelty of listing the dishes available on a menu and serving them at small individual tables." Following the revolution, the abolition of the guild system made it easier to open restaurants. Also, since so many aristocrats fled or were executed, their former cooks and servants found new employment and Paris became the center of the new restaurant scene, which, to some degree, it remains today.

The aim of this architecture competition is to design a new 21st century restaurant and wine bar on the promenade along the River Seine in Paris. The restaurant should be unique and innovative in all respects and should invent new ways to provide an overall sensory experience to the customers. The restaurant should experiment with unique materials, volumetric compositions layout systems and other transitional spaces to make it a new prototype and exemplary typology that will become an active gastronomical hub in the heart of the French capital. The participants should:

Create an architectural icon along the River Seine, that will become a popular destination for the residents and everyone who visits the city.  The participants must consider the attributes of light, color, materiality, aesthetic quality that will add a sense of identity to the restaurant, eventually creating a landmark along the picturesque context of River Seine. The participants are free to create their own design language, ranging from contemporary to traditional but should be able to merge the shell with the existing context in a respectful and additive fashion.

Create an experience within a restaurant shell that adds to the programmed interior space. The participants must try to create a wholesome experience for the end user rather than just a self-referential interior space. The participants are free to design a thematic or a generic interior environment but it should have an immersive effect on the customers, stimulating their sensory experience.

Maximize the use of the waterfront context and the promenade into the architectural concept for the restaurant. The participants are required to use the unique nature of the site into their design proposal and architectural built form. The participants can use the water element and picturesque surroundings and develop the restaurant as an open, semi-open seating zone. The quai or the dock-promenade can be used as an extension of the restaurant and cultured into a social and leisure zone.

Indian-Americans and Spelling Bees: Adding some nuance
It's that time of the year again. The only night of the year when desi people dominate ESPN primetime in the United States. The Scripps National Spelling Bee. Yet again, the winner...or rather co-winners..came from the families of Indian immigrants.

This has been happening for over a decade now, and every year, the aftermath of the Bee in Indian media and Indian and Indian-origin social media follows a similar pattern. There are a few think pieces about why Indian-Americans are so good at spelling bees. Some folks go all uber-patriotic extolling the superior virtues of our intellectual tradition and what not (cue...Bhaaaaarrrraat maaata kiiii.......). And some folks sneer, indulging in a mild form of communal self-loathing. I don't have kids but my close Indian-American friends who do are very emphatic about how they will not make...or even let their kids participate in something as nerdy and inherently uncool as a spelling bee.

Through Twitter I came across this post that quotes Varun Grover's interview in the excellent excellent documentary I Am Offended (do watch if you haven't) which references spelling bees. That blog, and Varun in that documentary, are making a larger point about how the Indian education system is centered around rote learning, stifling creativity and basically preparing "middle managers". And that the success in spelling bees is a symptom of that.

While I agree with Varun and Auctorly on the larger problem, I don't think it is correct to link spelling bees to that problem. I see where they are coming from, and the reason for that is a couple of myths about spelling bees in general which merit some attention.

Myth #1 Spelling Bees are all about memorizing thousands and thousands and thousands of words, and regurgitating them on stage.

I used to think the same way, but it's not really that way. A few years ago, I had a long chat with a student of mine (I am a college professor) who in her school days had participated in the spelling bee. She didn't win, but talked to me about how much fun it was, and ended up giving me a different perspective on this activity that I too once sneered at. Then I read some more about it, watched the documentary Spellbound, talked to some more students over the years, and I think it is necessary to add some nuance to how we view the "sport".

Spelling bee as a contest is more about pattern recognition than just rote memorization. Don't get me wrong. Of course it is important to know and remember many many words to participate in a spelling bee. But the same is true of scrabble. Or crosswords. Or trivia quizzing. Heck, memorization is key even in chess. A serious chess player will have thousands of moves and games memorized.

Just like all those activities/sports, spelling bee is about, yes, having a memory bank of relevant information, but at the top level, it is often about recognizing patterns, working out clues, and then formulating an answer by accessing the relevant information from your brain.

You know how the kids ask for meaning, language of origin, use it in a sentence etc etc? It is not for theater. It has important information, and many times, can even help you make an educated guess at the spelling of a word you've never heard of by using what is basically pattern recognition.

Let me give you an example about how I, without memorizing any words, was able to correctly guess one of the words in the final this year. The word was chremslach. When it was first uttered, I thought it would start with "Kr" and maybe end with "che" or "kh". Then I heard that the word was Yiddish. And the meaning was a kind of passover pastry. Instantly I thought of a pastry that a Jewish deli near my house excels at - rugelach. The end sounded the same. So it had to end in -lach. And the different pronunciations of the starting syllable suggested chr not Kr. The repeated usage by the moderator further confirmed what I had in my mind. A pattern emerged and voila. There the spelling was.

I felt thrilled at having worked it out before the contestant answered. It was a thrill similar to the one I get as a trivia quizzer when I crack a cleverly framed Final Jeopardy style "workout-able" question. Or the thrill I get when I crack a particularly cryptic clue in crosswords.

The aforementioned student kept stressing about how much fun the whole thing was for her. She said it was a form of solving puzzles. And I saw what she meant. I asked her, isn't it boring to memorize thousands and thousands of words. She said no, she LOVES words (sidenote - she always wrote the most well-crafted and thoughtful term papers in my class). And again, I see her point.

When you enjoy any activity built on pattern recognition so much that you want to seriously compete in it, you don't think of the underlying memorization as a drab chore. I like to play scrabble semi-competitively, and it is fun for me to have those cruel 2 letter words memorized so I can gain advantage on the board despite not having great tiles. And I'm sure poker players don't think of probability calculations as mundane.

Myth #2 These desi spelling be winners will most likely end up as middle managers, code coolies, cogs in the corporate machine....just total drones.

Although it seems like Indian-Americans have been winning the bee for ages, in reality, it's been less than two decades that it has been happening consistently. So the sample of winners is not statistically significant, but from whatever I read in "where are they now" type stories, I saw very few, if any, ending up in those drone type jobs.

A lot of them were in some form of research, which to me, as an academic researcher, makes sense. Research is like the rigorous grown-up impactful form of pattern recognition that is built upon a deep memory bank of knowledge about a subject. A bunch of them were doctors and lawyers. One was a professional poker player (again, pattern recognition and memory). And so on. I even googled a few names of winners and always found that the person was doing something really cool.

Maybe a systematic study will throw up more details.

Myth #3 We Indians are just awesome at English and we are such brainiacs and we have the bestest education-centric culture so we are awesome at Spelling Bees

While the first two myths were in the self-loathing category, this one is in the uber-patriotic category. I have no problem with Indians or Indian-origin feeling proud or elated or whatever at this dominance, although I am personally from the Bill Hicks school of thought when it comes to patriotism.

But let us dispel with this notion that there is something really inherently culturally genetically special about Indians that our kids just go to America, show up at spelling bees, and start winning them left and right. There is actually a pretty strong and well-organized training infrastructure that is making all this possible. Remember that these contestants train with the rigor and discipline of athletes. It is not done in isolation, but requires broader support like with any sport or activity.

What you see on ESPN is the culmination of a year of smaller contests, local spelling bees, practice bees, and other such events on the local circuits. And there's a kind of feedback loop that forms. Successive generations build on the success of previous generations. Legacies and even "dynasties" are created and inspire some to adhere to it. I could keep going, but I came across this article that explains the quasi-institutional reasons behind the dominance in more detail.

If some other community starts taking such a deep interest in the sport and organizes in such a serious grassroots way, other communities could start dominating too.

One thing to note is that the winners have all been kids of Indians who migrated to the United States. Recent Indian immigrants, much like recent immigrants of other communities, tend to socialize more with their compatriots and do so in a very community-based way, with associations and groups and mandals and so on. But second generation Indian-Americans are more assimilated in the American mainstream. So when they grow up and have kids of their own, they are not as plugged into the Indian-American groups and associations as their parents were.

So you don't see many (or even any?) third generation Indian-American children winning the spelling bee or even making it to the national finals, because they don't have automatic access to that community-based infrastructure.

The best way to end this post is to quote a now-grown-up Nupur Lala, the star of the Oscar winning documentary who arguably started this Indian-American phenomenon.

“Having watched Spellbound, I realized that several of my competitors weren’t any worse than me ability-wise, but they didn’t have the same advantages—economic privilege, educational background, family dynamics,” she says. “I know that played a big, big role in my success. As a 14-year-old, I really thought I was one of the best spellers out there. In hindsight, I think, yeah, I was a very good speller, but I also had some of the best preparation and resources out there. I had a mom who had a graduate degree in linguistics. Parents who have literally hundreds of books in the house, and who were very motivated to help me succeed.”

Antu Barva by P. L. "PuLa" Deshpande
Fourteen years ago today, Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, arguably the most influential and beloved person from Maharashtra, died at the age of 81. He left behind a gargantuan legacy in the form of his books, plays, songs, movies, essays, social work, but more than that, the lasting impact he has had on Maharashtra. Every couple of years, I translate one of his essays or short stories on this blog. This time, I have chosen Antu Barva, a fictionalized life sketch that he created as an amalgam of several people he knew in Konkan. It is not exactly LOL funny, but is light-hearted while still tugging at your heart-strings. It is meant as a depiction of the tough life in Konkan in the middle of the 20th century, and the sort of complex and poignant characters such a life spawns.

But as somber as the basic subject matter is, PuLa manages to inject humor into it, even if the humor is dark. When I first read Antu Barva, I just read it as a slightly humorous life sketch. As I have re-read it and re-heard its narration over the years, I have come to recognize it as something beyond just that. It is one of PuLa's best allegorical social commentaries in my opinion. He was duly recognized for Vyakti Aani Valli, the book that this sketch appears in, with a Sahitya Akademi Puraskaar. In that book, I think this is THE most impressive and multi-layered sketch.

For years, I considered translating Antu Barva here but was too intimidated given how nuanced it is. PuLa gave Antu a specific Konkani "voice" (in text form as well as when he narrated the sketch for TV) that is impossible to translate. No matter how well I tried, I thought I would end up doing injustice to the original work. This is in addition to the usual difficulties in translating PuLa's wordplay and nuanced observations. So it is with a great sense of trepidation that I am even attempting this today. A LOT will get lost in translation. But I hope PuLa's fans will forgive me any errors. Because I think this particular piece is one of the greatest literary achievements from an Indian and it deserves a wider audience.

Miss you, PuLa. Bhool-chook maaf kara.

Ratnagiri's middle lane has been home to some towering personalities over the years. God used a unique formula when creating these people. These people tend to be a metaphorical amalgam of Ratnagiri's most famous products - sweet mango, rough jackfruit, hard coconut, irritating colocasia leaves, and intense betel nuts whose one bite will make your heart jump up your throat.

It is in this unique Ratnagiri soil that Antu Barva grew and ripened. Actually, Antu's age doesn't really justify people casually calling him just "Antu". When I first met him 12-14 years ago, not just his stubble, but even the hair on his ears and chest had turned white. His teeth had mostly gone "Annu Gogtya".

Going Annu Gogtya = falling.

This is an idomatic phrase that Antu Barva coined. A lawyer from Ratnagiri named Annu Gogte has been standing in the local elections for many years. Standing and then falling. Repeatedly, without even coming close to winning. So even if a bucket falls in a well, Antu asks "has the bucket gone Annu?"

When someone is talking about old Antu, they just refer to him in the singular casual "Antu". As it is, characters from Konkan are quite singular. But no one calls Antu just "Antu" to his face.  They call him Antu sheth!

True blue Brahmin Antu got this trader caste suffix "sheth" decades ago. After all Antu himself had committed a sin justifying this demotion. During the first world war, Antu started a shop near the docks. It failed spectacularly even before the Treaty of Versailles. But that short-lived stint as a shopkeeper was enough to turn Antu into Antu sheth.

After that, no one remembers Antu doing anything specific to make a living. He manages to somehow score at least two square meals a day from somewhere. He has a little plot of land with a garden that has a couple of dozen coconut and Alphonso mango trees, sprinkled with the odd jackfruit and tamarind tree. He has a little single-room shack on that land. He has the right to draw water from the nearby well. Antu sheth manages to get by on all this.

I first met Antu at Bapu Hegishte's store. I had gone there to buy some cigarettes when Antu's face peered out from behind a newspaper. He slid his reading glasses up his forehead and said,

"You're Lawyer saheb's son-in-law, right?"

"Yes" I replied.

"Ahha! I recognized you right away! Please, have a seat, please. Bapu, some tea for our jawaibapu (a respectful term for son-in-law)!"

I had no idea who this guy was, suddenly acting so familiar. Antu sheth himself explained,

"Your father-in-law is a good friend of mine. Tell him Antu Barva said hello."

"Sure."

"Hmmm....when did you come from Pune?"

"Two days ago."

"Of course....the first Diwali after you got married....haha...ask him for a Ford car!"

"He is your friend. Why don't you tell him?"

"Haha, you're from Pune after all. Can't get the last word with you." he laughed. "So...staying long or just a flying visit?"

"Just a short trip. I'm leaving in a couple of days."

"Excellent! It's always good to keep such visits short. Familiarity breeds contempt and all that. Don't end up like that Kasopkar's son-in-law. He set up camp for six months. Finally Kasopkar lost his patience and made him plow his land! When a son-in-law stays with you for too long, he starts feeling like a pain in the neck, right?"

"You're right." I nodded.

"Bapusheth, I hope you recognized our lawyer's son-in-law. We are both your father-in-law's clients, jawaibapu."

Bapu Hegishte smiled and folded his hands in greeting.

"Welcome. Would you like to have some tea?" he asked.

"No, it's okay. It's really hot right now."

"Of course, it's always going to be hot in Ratnagiri!" Antu jumped in. "You can't sleep in a cowshed and then complain about the stink of cow piss! If Ratnagiri had cool weather, they'd have called it Shimla, not Ratnagiri!"

Before I could say anything, Antu continued,

"But the heat is way worse in your neighborhood with all those houses next to each other. Come to my garden near the beach. My garden is...how do you say...."aircondition"!"

Antu sheth said the last words in English and laughed, and then added,

"That's our country joke, jawaibapu!"

Then he addressed Hegishte again.

"Bapusheth, did you know our jawaibapu here is a writer? Writes plays and movies and what not. Behave properly when he is around or he'll write a hilarious farce about you."

The pride I felt on my fame having spread even to someone like Antu Barva was dashed by Bapu Hegishte's next question. Bapusheth looked me up and down carefully for a few seconds and said,

"What do you do?"

"What the hell do you mean what does he do?" Antu thundered. "Are you insane, Hegishte? Take out that pile of raddi old newspapers and open them. You'll see his name and picture in dozens of places! He makes movies!"

"Movies!!?? Really??" Hegishte's expression changed to one of wonderment and he looked at me as if I was God.

"Jawaibapu, speaking of movies, can I ask you a question if you don't mind?"

I could see the naughty expression on Antusheth's face as he asked me this.

"Sure, go ahead."

"How much money do you make from one movie?"

This wasn't my first trip to Konkan. So by now, I had gotten used to dealing with such intensely personal questions.

"That really varies from movie to movie." I deflected.

"But still....I mean I have read that you get like a million or a million and a half."

"No way! There isn't nearly that kind of money in Marathi films."

"Yeah, but still. Even if you don't get fistfuls, you must be getting at least 2-3 pinchfulls?"

"You get it sometimes, and also lose it sometimes." I stuck to being vague.

"Well of course, it's a business after all. When it comes to business, you win some, you lose some. It's all part of the game."

Antu sheth got philosophical. But only for a moment.

"Can I ask you one more question? Only if you don't get angry."

"What's there to get angry about? Go ahead."

"Well..you know....whatever we read about these film actresses in magazines and all....is that real or is it fake like Gangadhar Basthe's "real" Belgaum butter?"

"What do you mean all this about film actresses?" I kept a straight face and pretended to not get what he was saying.

"Quite a skillful guy you are, jawaibapu. Skillful! You'll make a great witness in court!" Antu sheth was having none of it. "All this about film actresses as in...the whole index finger nostril thing."

I didn't immediately get what he meant by the whole index finger nostril thing. So Antu sheth gently tapped his index finger against his nostril and winked. Fortunately, before I had to say anything, a waiter arrived with the tea Hegishte had ordered.

"Looks like all the cows in Ratnagiri are still pregnant, Jhampya!" Antu made a sarcastic remark to the waiter on the color of the tea. And then he poured the tea in the saucer and started slurping it.

Actually, Antu sheth could have just said to the waiter in plain words that the tea was low on milk. But he preferred the "all the cows are still pregnant" phrasing. Why just Antu sheth? Almost everyone from that middle lane in Ratnagiri spoke in that sarcastic obtuse way.

By now, Antu sheth and I have become good friends. In the last decade or so, whenever I have gone to Ratnagiri, I have spent time with him. He always included me in his group of friends, taught me the ganjifa card games they played. And over the years, I heard a lot monologues on the odd philosophy of life that those men in their 60s had developed.

I even learned all the idiomatic phrases the group had come up with. They all dressed similar. A cotton loincloth from the waist below, a small cotton scarf on the shoulder, worn-out sandals, one hand holding a walking stick, and the other holding a jackfruit. Dressed like that, Antu sheth would roam around in the neighborhood calling his friends to join him every afternoon.

"Govindbhat! Wanna play a couple of hands?"

"Paranjape? Are you awake or have you turned into a python?"

I too became a part of their card game gang. If once in a while, the card game wasn't really panning out well, Antu would put the cards down and say to me,

"Jawaibapu, why don't you sing a Malkauns or something? Godbolya, bash a little tabla with our guest. Khaju sheth, open your decrepit harmonium."

And then we'd have an impromptu jam session for a bit at Antu sheth's orders.

"Jawaibapu, your pipes are kick-ass!" he'd compliment my singing in his unique way.

Every other year or so, I'd visit Ratnagiri and attend Antu sheth's court. But with each visit, the court seemed to be getting smaller.

"Antu sheth, haven't seen Damu kaka around." I asked once.

"Who? Damu Nene? He is living it up! I am told Rambha is rubbing oil on his bald head, and Urvashi is airing him with a fan!"

"What????"

"What do you mean what? Damu Nene got transferred from Ratnagiri!" and Antu Sheth pointed to the sky.

"Oh!" I finally understood what he meant. "I am so sorry. I had no idea."

"Why would you have any idea about it? Do you think that they're going to announce on the radio that Damu Nene has croaked? His family did pay for an obituary in the newspaper though. Heh, they wrote he was loving, caring, friendly, pious, and what not. What do the newspaper folks care? As long as you are paying, they will publish any nonsense."

Antu continued in his characteristic manner.

"Damu Nene and loving? Hmpf! Even when he was lying dead on the pyre, the furrow on his brow was intact! One day he decided to sleep outdoors because it was too hot. They found him dead the next morning. Lucky bugger. Died on Ashadhi Ekadashi too! So there were two processions from Ratnagiri that day. One for Lord Vithoba and another for Damu Nene. Damu died on Ashadhi. And then on Dussehra, Dattu Paranjape crossed the border and did seemolanghan. The first guy croaked, the second guy croaked.....now waiting for the third. They say things happen in three."

Antu looked at me mischievously and shrugged.

And that's the essence of Antu Barva for you. Standing at less than 5 feet, bronze-fair complexion, small pockmarks on his face, small gray eyes, creased skin belying his advanced age, half his teeth fallen....or "gone Annu"...leading to a new habit of poking his tongue through the gaps while talking.... and with all this, weighing in at barely 100 lbs.

Every aspect of Antu Barva's earthly existence was getting worn out with each passing year except for two - the nasal booming voice and the slick intelligence fed by decades of rubbing coconut oil on his head.

It wasn't just Antu sheth. Almost all the men his age from that part of Ratnagiri were of a similar bent....which was a crooked bent. Their language was unnecessarily complex and their attitude exceedingly cynical. They didn't feel happy if someone did well, and didn't feel sad if a tragedy befell someone. There was no joy for births, no mourning for deaths. Most of them apart from Antu didn't really like music, but didn't dislike it either. And when it came to food, the taste and flavors didn't matter, as long as their belly got filled. The engine of their life never really faltered when it ran out of steam, nor did it go fast when it did have some steam. But the road their lives took was like every road in Konkan- serpentine.

That's the hand life had dealt them. Even though their lives were full of the wholesome coconut tree, their fates and thus their tastes leaned less towards the sweet creamy inside of the coconut, and more towards its tough shell.

One summer, a second-rate theater company from Mumbai was touring Ratnagiri staging Ram Ganesh Gadkari's famous play Ekach Pyala. I went to watch it. The production was barely competent in the first act. At intermission, I walked outside to the hissing clinks of soda bottles being opened. Under a Kitson lamp, I saw Antu sheth's diminutive form. He was talking to the fur-cap clad manager of the theater company.

"So....how's the attendance?" Antu sheth asked.

"Not bad." the manager gruffly replied.

"Not bad? Most of the chairs seem empty. Why don't you let me in for half price?"

"No way!" the manager shook his head rudely.

"Why are you brushing me away like a lizard? I heard the first act from out here anyway. The guy playing Sindhu doesn't seem to be very good."

[aside - in the early-to-mid 20th century in orthodox Maharashtra, it was taboo for women to perform on stage. So much like in Shakespeare's days, female parts were usually played by men. The legendary Bal Gandharva excelled at this and one of his most famous roles was playing Sindhu in the first staging of Ekach Pyala.]

"The guy playing Sindhu doesn't seem to be very good." Antu sheth said. "He sang 'lage hridayi hurhur' like a squeaking mouse. Did you ever hear how Bal Gandharva sang it?"

The manager got pissed off.

"I'm not begging you to come watch it!" he thundered.

"But the town is full of your advertising boards begging us to come watch it." Antu sheth instantly replied. "And yesterday your people were going door to door with fliers. As it is, it's mainly empty chairs you are showing this play to. How about four annas?"

"Four annas? What is this? A monkey performing on the street?"

"That's better than this! They perform first and then circulate a plate for money. Why don't you try that? If the next act is better than the first one, I'll pay you an extra four annas!"

The people standing around them started laughing and the manager got even more upset. That's when Antu sheth noticed me.

"Namaskar, jawaibapu! How's it going? How's Ekach Pyala?"

"It's okay." I said.

"I'm sure you got a complimentary pass. You're from the same community. I have heard that barbers don't charge each other for shaves."

"No, nothing like that. See, I bought a ticket."

"Then why a wishy-washy response like "it's okay"? You've paid hard-earned money for this, haven't you? Assert your rights as a paying customer. Call it what it is. Utter crap. Especially that guy playing Sindhu is totally useless!"

"What do you mean the guy playing Sindhu? It's a woman playing the role." I told him.

"WHAT??" Antu sheth looked genuinely shocked. "You're kidding me! That voice and that built! If she decides, she can lift Sudhakar up like a baby! Sindhu indeed.......more like Sindhudurg!"

"So you watched the play after all?"

"For a few minutes. Moved the curtains from the window and had a peek. Hmpf! Even gypsy performers are better than these idiots."

Antu sheth spat out another unsolicited opinion and walked away.

But that's pretty much what his life was - spitting out unsolicited opinions. I knew Antu for so many years, but I never found out much about his family situation. Once Anna Sane from Antu's court had let slip a mention of his son.

"What? Antu sheth has a son?" I asked.

"Of course he has a son. Not only that, his son is a Collector!" Anna Sane nonchalantly said.

"Collector???"

"Yup. He's in charge of collecting tickets on Byculla station." he deadpanned without letting a single muscle move.

"Doesn't look like he helps out his father financially."

"He does sometimes. When he can. He has his own family. Besides, a Western Railway compartment has been attached to a Central Railway train."

A PhD student could do a dissertation on those guys' peculiar idioms and phrases. I was well-versed in the language by now but it took me a few moments to realize that this was code for an inter-religion marriage.

"So you see, Antu sheth has trouble with his post-bath rituals at his son's place. Plus apparently his son is also into some other Anglicized habits if you know what I mean. So how can Antu sheth spend too much time there? Still, once Antu sheth swallowed all the insults and went to Mumbai to see his grandson. Came back looking like he had messed up a math problem."

"Every Dussehra and Diwali, Antu gets his son's love in the form of a money order. Not much, maybe 5-10 rupees. For a few days after that, Antu acts like he's won the lottery and splurges as much as he can. Which isn't much."

"Understandable." I said. "After all, how much can a ticket collector's pay be?"

"Yeah, the pay is pretty meager. But one hears that a ticket collector can also make a little more on the side, especially in holiday season if you know what I mean." Anna said. "Nothing wrong with it of course. If he has an opportunity to make some money, why shouldn't he? You know how it is in this country. If you get caught taking a ten rupee bribe, they put a striped cap on your head and send you to prison. But if you get caught taking a million rupee bribe, they put a Gandhi cap on your head and send you to Parliament! Democraticaly elected people's representative!"

Politics was the most favorite topic for Antu sheth and his buddies to express their unique opinions on. They had profound thoughts on every politician and party. One year, there was a famine in Konkan. Konkan is always facing a famine as it is. But this particular one was so bad that in Antu sheth's words it had "been approved under the Famine Act".

Nehru was touring the famine-hit parts of Konkan. He visited Ratnagiri for a speech and the whole town was caught up in Nehru-mania. One evening, someone asked Antu sheth,

"Antu sheth, I didn't see you at the speech?"

"Whose speech? Nehru's? Hmpf!" Antu sheth's disdain was obvious. "What nonsense. There's a famine here. Stop giving speeches. Give us food! This is like seeing a man drowning and instead of saving him, reading from the Quran to ensure that he doesn't end up in hell. Utterly useless. But everyone else is stupid. Oh, Nehru is here? He is giving a speech? He gives great speeches! Let's go! Bloody lemmings!"

"And now that Nehru is in Ratnagiri, what did they do? Idiots took him to show the house, room, and bed where Lokmanya Tilak was born! Morons. Tell me, did god appear in Gangadhar Tilak's dreams and tell him that your wife is going to give birth to a great leader? How would anyone even remember what bed Tilak was born on? But who cares? They just showed Nehru some random room and bed and bluffed - this is where Tilak first went WAAAAAAAAAA."

"Morons! Where's the proof? Where's the proof? Did they get the midwife from Tilak's birth to certify the bed? Hmpf! Forget Tilak. It's been a 100 years since he was born. You tell me. Can your own mother confidently identify the room and the bed where she gave birth to you? Go ask her and then tell me about Nehru and Tilak."

And so ended the rant.

I always wondered if there was anything or anyone in the world that Antu sheth and his friends had respect for. If they ever had a polite dignified response for anything at all.

Somebody's son became a Professor. And Antu's response,

"Professor? In a circus? There used to be this Professor Chhatre in circuses performing magic tricks."

Someone opened a new store. And Antu's response,

"Tell him to have a bankruptcy form ready. It'll save time when the inevitable happens."

Who knows what school of philosophy these guys followed. More than half of them survived on money orders from children and relatives. They saved money from that and file lawsuits for the strangest reasons. Every lawsuit is stuck in delayed hearing dates. These guys have a big beautiful sea coast, coconut trees, gardens, everything you could reasonably hope for to be happy. But that apparent prosperity gets punctured by an occasional bout of misfortune and all that remains is an impenetrable shield of gallows humor.

Somehow the topic of Gandhi came up. And Antu sheth got on his soap box.

"Gandhi? What Gandhi? Traveled all over the world, but never came to Ratnagiri! Because he was smart. He knew that here, no one gives a damn about his loincloth or his walking stick. We are all just as naked and just as skinny. And his obsession with spinning khadi. It's all useless. Our own Shambhu sheth. All his life, he followed Gandhi's teachings and spun khadi for his clothes. Forget the British government, even Ratnagiri's Collector Gilligan didn't fear his "civil disobedience". And you're talking about Gandhi."

"Then there are all his hunger strikes and fasts. Half of Konkan is hungry and fasting, and not by choice. Someone who is well-fed will find something remarkable about hunger strikes. What do we care? Don't get me wrong. I am not saying Gandhi wasn't a great man. He was. But in our books, under what column should we make an entry for his greatness? And if you are talking about independence, then that had nothing to do with Gandhi, or Tilak or Savarkar."

"So did independence just fall out of the sky?" I asked him.

"It's up to you to find out where it fell out of." Antu replied. "One thing I am sure of is that the Brits left because they got bored. What more was left for them to loot? Their Raj business started making a loss, so they effectively declared bankruptcy and went home. The potter left with his pottery, and we sit here cradling his leftover broken pieces. This is all just a cycle of life and bigger than anything we can comprehend. It's not British rule, nor is it Nehru's rule, nor people's rule, nor anyone's rule. It's the creator's rule."

"So how did your creator end up siding with the British?" I asked.

"Don't be silly. The creator is sitting pretty on his throne. He just played a small game."

"A game that translated into 150 years of slavery?"

"It's 150 years for you and me." Antu sheth was steadfast. "The almighty's wrist watch doesn't move forward by even one second unless a thousand years go by for us. In his eyes and on his scale, all this is just a minor game that lasted barely a millisecond."

When these emaciated old men started spouting this philosophy on the front yards of that impoverished middle lane in Ratnagiri, with dark shadows formed by the dim light of their age-worn oil lamps dancing on their wrinkled faces, my heart couldn't help but shudder.

"Socialism? What socialism? All nonsense, I tell you. Not even two mango leaves are alike. And these guys want to pretend all men are equal. In the creator's eyes, each individual is unique. How are they going to have equal opportunities or equal outcomes? But everyone is just blabbering....socialism is coming. Just like that Ratnagiri's legislator is saying...Konkan Railway is coming, Konkan Railway is coming. Sure, Konkan Railway is coming. And it's tracks are going through where one-armed Pandu Gurav's toilet used to be. Even if it does, is it going to make Pandu's shoulder stump sprout an arm? What difference will it make?"

"And without an arm to plow his field or pick his crops, no matter what you do with that damn railway, what good is it going to do him? He is still the same. Just because India became independent, does not mean that Hari Sathe's lazy eye got fixed. Nor did Mahadev Godbole's paunch disappear.  Nothing really changed. Even in the fabled Ram Rajya, Ram didn't uproot Hanuman's tail and attach it to his own ass. No. Ram stayed a man, and Hanuman stayed a monkey."

At such times, it almost seem like the Goddess of Wisdom Saraswati is sitting on Antu sheth's tongue.

"You're right." I said.

"Don't just say I am right for the heck of it to be polite. If I am wrong, say that and correct me. You might be younger than me when it comes to age, but when it comes to education, you are my elder, jawaibapu!"

Once in a while, Antu sheth will say something genuinely from his heart, without any sarcasm. But there is always some burning issue close to his heart underlying what he says.

The last few years, I could not go to Ratnagiri as often as I used to. In the meanwhile, Ratnagiri finally got electricity, its own college, tar roads, and all other features of 20th century life. When I met him after that, I said,

"Antu sheth, your Ratnagiri has now become posh! Electric lights and everything. Did your house get an electric connection?"

"No, not yet. But it's good that it's dark. Tomorrow even if I do get electricity, what is there to look at in that bright light? A penniless life? Who needs electricity to look at chipped walls and leaking shingles? It's better that my poverty stays hidden in darkness."

And then he laughed loudly for a full minute like it was a joke.

This time I saw that his teeth had gone almost completely Annu Gogte. I also learned that a couple of more friends of his had passed on and that the card game court was emptier than ever. For a change, I spotted a sense of love, longing, and kindness in the way Antu sheth spoke. I guess the empty seats at his card games were starting to make a place in his heart.

"Joglekar's son got a big promotion and moved to Delhi!" Antu sheth voluntarily shared some pleasant news without his customary sarcastic rejoinder. "Took his old man to Kashi, Haridwar, Vishweshwar, Hrishikesh and all. Fed a 100 brahmins there. Old man Joglekar was thoughtful enough to get me a small sealed pot with water from the Ganga. When you come visit next time, jawaibapu, you'll probably see that the seal has been broken and the water was poured down my throat if you know what I mean."

The next time I visited Ratnagiri, fortunately Antu sheth's Ganga water pot was still sealed.

"Wow, jawaibapu, wow! Congratulations! I heard you're going to England! Congratulations! Have a great trip. Just one "request" for you. Now I have to speak with you in English. So a "request"."

"What request?"

"Go see the Kohinoor diamond once. For some reason, it's an obsession I have always had, the Kohinoor diamond. I can't go see it, but you do it on my behalf. And then come back and tell me how it looks. See all the sights in London and Paris and everything!"

For some reason, I was overcome with a desire to touch his feet, something I had never done before. Right there on the street, I bent down and touched his feet.

"Live a long life!" Antu sheth touched my head gently. "You are a good person, which is why you are so successful."

I said goodbye and started to leave. I had barely gone four steps when I suddenly heard the familiar

"Jawaibapu!!!"

"Yes, Antu sheth?" I turned around.

"Forgot to ask you one thing. Are you going alone or with your wife?"

"Both of us are going."

"That's good. Don't mind me, I just had a nagging doubt, so I asked. You are going far away to learn something new. So I was reminded of Devayani's tale from mythology. Hahaha. Convey my blessings to your wife too. I am telling you, your good fortune is all because of her. That's all life is eventually about - the right woman."

Antu sheth paused and continued.

"Let me tell you something. Just between us. My wife passed away 40 years ago. Since then, the alphonso mango tree near my door has stopped flowering. When she was around, the tree yielded hundreds of mangoes every year. But since she left.....you know....fate can take really strange turns. Sorry, I am rambling. Anyway, safe travels. So when are you leaving from Ratnagiri?"

"Tomorrow morning by bus."

"Direct Ratnagiri to Mumbai?"

"Yes."

"Good call. Once someone completes that journey, then even traveling around the world seems easy in comparison. The other day Tatya Jog made the trip. He is still trying to locate all his bones.  Told me some 7-8 bones are missing!"

And he started laughing hard with his mouth wide open. I noticed that there was only one tooth remaining that hadn't gone Annu Gogte.

The next morning at 5 AM at the bus stand, I again heard the familiar cry,

"JAWAIBAPU!"

Antu sheth approached me and gave me a small paper pouch.

"I know you don't believe in god, jawaibapu, but do me a favor and keep this in your pocket. It is holy ash. It will keep you safe. You are going to London by air, so this small pouch shouldn't add too much weight to your luggage."

I put the pouch in my pocket. As the bus got going, I saw Antu sheth lift his shirt and gently wipe tears from his small blinking gray eyes. In that dim dawn light, seeing his bony chest and his concave stomach which had all but touched his back suddenly tugged at my heart.

Just like Konkan's jackfruit, it's people taste sweet only when they ripen for a long time.

          Halloween and Uncle Leo
Seven years ago this day was my first Halloween in America. I was a fresh PhD student still struggling with how much tougher the coursework was than I had expected. I had been in the country for a little over two months. That evening, after I finished my Stats homework at school and got on the bus to go home, I saw people in costumes all around me.

Ah, it's Halloween, I realized. Until then, most of what I knew of this country came from TV shows, movies, and books. So I knew that this was the night when kids accompanied by their parents roam their neighborhoods, knock on doors, and demand candy by yelling "Trick or Treat!!!". Oh great! So I will be expected to buy candy and hand it out? What a scam! But when in Rome, right?

Not wanting to be seen as a rude or clueless foreigner, I decided to take the necessary steps. I got off the bus at the stop in front of the grocery store. Bought lots of candy. Took another bus home. When I say "home", I mean a 3 bedroom row house I shared with two other Indian grad students who were both out of town that night.

At home, I put the candy in a bowl, turned the TV on and waited. The hours ticked by. Not a single knock on my door! I looked out the window. There were groups of kids and their parents dressed up in costumes knocking on doors around my building complex. So I guessed it was just a matter of time before they came to my door. But another hour passed by and there was no knock on my door. Before I knew it, it was 11 PM, the streets were deserted, and not a single person had come to my door trick-or-treating! All the candy was sitting there in the bowl. Except for the dozen or so that I had polished of watching TV.

The next day, I felt a little hurt. The neighborhood trick or treaters had ignored me! And as is the instinctive reaction for many of us, my first thoughts went to racism. It was because I was brown, I decided. These racist white folks didn't want to take their kids to an Indian guy's house. How shallow they are. And how bad I have it! I spent several hours indulging myself in the victim routine when everything that does not fit your expectations is due to racism. I became the Indian version of Jerry's Uncle Leo!
