Sowieci chcieli wykopać specjalny kanał, którym do Jeziora Aralskiego płynęłaby woda z syberyjskich rzek (Ob i Irtysz).

Edenia: a lost Yiddish utopia for Ukraine and its afterlife in modern-day Kharkiv

Kalman Zingman’s 1918 Yiddish-language novella In Edenia, a City of the Future imagines a new world of tolerance and culture in eastern Ukraine. Now the region is war-torn and the Jewish population decimated. A new exhibition in Kharkiv — the site of Zingman’s utopia — aims to bring his vision to bear on a divided modern nation

Edenia: a lost Yiddish utopia for Ukraine and its afterlife in modern-day Kharkiv

A design by Jewish avant-garde artist El Lissitsky from his 1922 version of the Yiddish folk tale Four Billy Goats

At one point in Kalman Zingman’s 1918 Yiddish novella In Edenia, a City of the Future, the protagonist Zalman Kindishman stands admiring a monument on the titular city’s Freedom Square:

A young girl with an ardent glance, her hair in loose curls, stepping with her feet on a snake, which is completely wrapped around her. In one hand she holds a blood-red flag and in the other — a black one. On the bottom of the red side is a bas-relief depicting high barricades, flattened faces — a war is going on. There is also a bas-relief on the other side, under the black flag, of the victims after the war, of those who were shot: a Russian, a Ukrainian, a Pole, a Jew, a Georgian, et cetera — all dead. The inscription reads: “They fought together, they died together.”

Edenia is a utopian future version of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, projected forward from the 1910s into the 40s. Now there’s another war going on nearby, this time between Russia and Ukraine; that, and the sickening disjunction between Zingman’s Yiddish fantasia and what actually befell the region’s Jews in the Second World War, might seem to discredit the author’s vision of cooperation and reconciliation.

For Russian-American artist Yevgeniy Fiks and American-Ukrainian curator Larissa Babij, however, the peculiar world of Zingman’s Edenia is worth remembering. Together, they have created a new exhibition named after his novella, currently on display in Kharkiv’s Yermilov Centre. In the novella, Kindishman visits Edenia’s art museum; Fiks and Babij have invited an international group of artists — the participants include Babi Badalov (Azerbaijan), Ruth Jenrbekova and Maria Vilkovisky (Kazakhstan), Aikaterini Gegisian (Greece/Armenia), Haim Sokol (Russia/Israel) and Nikita Kadan (Ukraine) — to contribute artworks towards a reconstruction of this imaginary space. In the process, they are posing many of the same questions of multiculturalism and futurism that occupied Zingman almost a century ago. What might a better future for Ukraine look like? And what position might religious and ethnic minorities hold within it?

“Utopian or futuristic Yiddish literature is not common,” Fiks tells me. “Most often Yiddish literature either talks about the present or remembers the past.” In Zingman’s text, Zalman Kindishman comes to Edenia to visit his old friend Yugendboym. Here, there is no money — every citizen has their material needs provided for. National communities — Jews, Ukrainians and others — live in complete harmony and are free to set their own laws. There are flying “aerotrains”, an artificially regulated climate, abundant gardens with children celebrating Jewish holidays by their thousands. Edenia is not a Jewish-only city, but one where questions of anti-Semitism have been superseded.

Zingman’s vision of a peaceful existence for Ukraine’s Jews clashes horribly with the country’s history. The post-revolutionary, short-lived Ukrainian People’s Republic (1917-1921) was the first modern state to have a Ministry for Jewish Affairs, and Yiddish was made a state language. But pogroms continued unabated, and between 1918, when Zingman’s book was written, and 1920, at least 31,000 Jews were killed in Ukraine — the real number may be as high as 100,000. The great majority died at the hands of nationalists and anti-Communists, many of whom saw Bolshevism as a sinister Semitic plot. Even greater horrors were to come in the Second World War, when the country was occupied by the Nazis and Ukrainian collaborators. An estimated one million Jews were murdered in Ukraine during the Holocaust; 70 per cent of the country’s Jewish population was killed or displaced.

The Drobitskiy Menorah, a memorial at Drobitskiy Yar, a ravine outside Kharkiv where over 16,000 Jews were murdered during the Holocaust

“Personally, I feel that the Yiddish question is precisely the question that should be raised when we talk about the present and future relationship between Ukraine and Russia,” Fiks says. “Perhaps the silence of Yiddish in the streets of both Ukraine and Russia, if acknowledged and contemplated, cries the need, the hope for a better world, a word of multiculturalism and autonomy.” For Babij, this is a question of both national and personal significance. “While working on this exhibition I could not help but notice how the site of multi-ethnic or inter-national coexistence has shifted to the scale of the individual,” she says. Hence the exhibition acts “not only as a reminder of Ukraine’s rich multicultural landscape of the past, but also as an attempt to present and enact a more complex understanding of cultural identity.”

What might a better future for Ukraine look like? And what position might religious and ethnic minorities hold within it?

The question of Ukraine’s past and its impact on the future is a live one; in Fiks’s words, the country is reinventing itself “with forces of multiculturalism on the one side and extreme nationalism on the other in a state of constant flux.” In its attempts to wrench itself free from Russian influence and plant its feet firmly in the western European community, post-Maidan Ukraine has not always trod delicately: from the controversial programme of “decommunisation” to the nationalist historical retrofitting promoted by Volodymyr Viatrovych’s Institute of National Memory and the uncritical public lionisation of wartime figures like nationalist militia leader Stepan Bandera. The reappraisal of Zingman’s novella and an attention to Ukraine’s historical hybridity is timely, even if, as Babij admits, the Kharkiv exhibition represents a “relatively small, bounded space”.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Zingman’s work is its combination of futuristic technologies with a lingering, “old world” devotion to eastern European Yiddish cultural tradition. Edenia is dotted with memorials exalting Jewish artists and writers: Yitskhok Peretz, Roza Fayngold, Sholem Aleichem, El Lissitsky. Its citizens are avid readers to the extent that the literary scholar Professor Shvartsvald is treated like a rock star, his lectures on Peretz overflowing onto the street.

For Babij, Zingman “maintains a separation between the realms of everyday activity, where technological advancements have increased the comfort and ease of residents’ lives, and the sphere of culture. It’s interesting to contrast this vision with that of the early Soviet avant-garde, which envisioned art and its formal possibilities as a means to transform out-dated ways of living, to shape and prepare society for new forms of organisation, often through a violent break with and obliteration of past cultural traditions.”

The exhibition itself jumps across time and space, its contributing artists turning their hands to themes of migration, religion and repression. Curandi Katz embroiders textiles with the borders of territories unrecognised by international law — including Russia-annexed Crimea, an open wound in the Ukrainian national psyche. Ruth Jenrbekova and Maria Vilkovisky have created a video guide to their own utopian projection: a world in which the Central Asian states have formed into a federation of autonomous tribes. Perhaps the most pointed commentary on the erasure and resurfacing of history is provided by Nikita Kadan’s Viewers (2016). The great Constructivist designer Alexander Rodchenko produced a series of portraits of Soviet leaders in Uzbekistan in 1934; when these figures were repressed a few years later, Rodchenko blacked out their faces in his copy of the album. Kadan reproduces these disfigured portraits, labelling them “the faces of the spirits of history… History (in other words, the accumulation of ruins) happens under their watchful gaze.”

Zingman’s novella ends abruptly with Zalman Kindishman’s mysterious disappearance and death. The Jewish culture Zingman so cherished was brutally cut down a few decades later. Many Ukrainians are now no clearer as to the future they are headed towards than their predecessors of the early twentieth century. What place does utopian thinking occupy in the modern nation state? “I think the term utopia, especially after the events of the twentieth century, is loaded and politicised,” Fiks concludes. “I think hoping and seeking happiness is a very basic, very human thing. But we must be very wary and very conscious about our methods.” For Babij, Ukraine today is “carried away by visions of a better future, whether in the shape of an idealised image of the European Union or the soothing promises of a strong, authoritarian neighbouring ruler or the hope that current Ukrainian politicians will miraculously change the way this country has been run for the past 25 years.” Hence the importance of history: “the past is really the only thing we can look at and talk about concretely.”

Edenia is governed by two sects. The Heavenly Ones “renounce all earthly pleasures, all the enjoyments that life can bring. They maintain that there is an even higher world, a more beautiful one.” The second sect are the “Earthly Ones, who say: enrich and improve life, so that heaven can be on earth.” This practical, materialist message is what is picked up and translated for modern Ukraine in Fiks’s and Babij’s exhibition. Our best bet might be to follow the advice given by Yitskhok Peretz, one of the Yiddish writers celebrated in Edenia, in one of his poems: “Don’t think the world is a wasteland — created/For wolves and for foxes, for spoils and for booty… Oh, don’t think the world is a wasteland.”

In Edenia, a City of the Future is on display at the Yermilov Centre in Kharkiv until 9 July.

Uzbeks angry with Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny over Pushkin comment

Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny has caused a social media storm and wider debate about Russian influence in Uzbekistan, after he claimed during a TV interview that Uzbeks were ignorant of Romantic poet Alexander Pushkin.

The prominent anti-corruption campaigner made the misstep during a broadcast on independent Russian channel TV Rain, when he and presenter Ksenia Sobchak posited that Pushkin is largely unknown outside of Russia, with the population of Uzbekistan particularly unschooled on the poet's life and works.

As a result of the broadcast, Pushkin has become the unlikely star of online debate in Uzbekistan — some social media users denounced the statement as untrue, while others took aim at their compatriots for bowing to Russian pressure.

A comment by one member of Facebook group Uzbek MDK that “We speak Russian better than people in some Russian-speaking regions!” was echoed in numerous videos of children reading reciting Pushkin poems in response to the Russian opposition leader's comments. Others pointed out that the poet's works are not only well known in Uzbekistan, but he also has a metro station, squares and parks named after him.

On the other hand, numerous other Uzbek users argued against their compatriots' apparent preoccupation with knowing Russian language and culture and suggested that they should instead appreciate and invest in local culture.

“Your knowledge of the Russian language does not develop Uzbekistan and Pushkin's poems do not bring well-being to your families. You should educate your children properly and teach them their own history,” contended a member of Uzbek MDK. “We do not have to know what they want us to know!” asserted another.

Uzbek is the official language of Uzbekistan, but Russian is still widely used. This is particularly true of the capital, Tashkent, where speaking Russian is seen as an indicator of high social standing.

A Libyan ambush, Central Asia’s security wobbles and Mozambique’s loan scandal: The cheat sheet

All eyes on Libya

It’s been a rollercoaster few weeks for Libya. A spot of good news first: Libya is pumping oil at its highest rate in four years, an important boon for a country that relies heavily on the petroleum industry. Now for a bunch of bad: This week, a convoy from the UN Support Mission in Libya was ambushed and, according to reports, their staff taken at gunpoint. The UN now says its staff are all safely in Tripoli, but the incident is yet another a sign of the chaos in Libya, where multiple forces claim authority and there is heavy fighting in some parts of the country, including Benghazi. The UN has just appointed a new envoy to the country – a former Lebanese minister of culture – a process that took four months, after the US rejected a Palestinian appointee because of his nationality, followed by retaliatory objections to other candidates from Russia and other countries. UNISMIL and various UN agencies have been gradually increasing their presence on the ground in the dangerous country, but this week’s ambush is likely to be a major setback. And with Italy threatening to deny entry to foreign ships docking on its shores – an effort to force its European partners to do more about the massive influx of migrants, mostly coming from Libya – the internal divisions and external debate over Libya make it one to watch.

Au revoir UNOCI

While it’s something to celebrate, the closure today of the UN’s peacekeeping mission in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI) has also generated some concerns. Although Cote d’Ivoire is one of Africa’s fastest growing economies, two mutinies this year by disgruntled soldiers suggests it has not fully healed from the 2002-2003 civil war and the post-election violence of 2010-2011. Human Rights Watch has called on the Ivorian government to address the rights issues at the root of past political violence, including the problem of impunity and the need to professionalise its security forces. It also pointed to the incomplete national reconciliation process and continued competition over land as potential flashpoints. With the peacekeepers’ withdrawal, a UN Security Council briefing noted the need for the international community to stay engaged. In a statement to the council, Sweden said the closure of UNOCI meant the “UN presence in the country is facing a ‘financial cliff’. This risks undermining the sustainability of the gains achieved.”

Is Afghanistan pulling Central Asia into chaos?

That’s the question at the heart of this new report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies. While Afghanistan’s downward spiral has been plotted meticulously by journalists and analysts, Central Asian states are often overlooked – to our potential peril, according to CSIS. The report notes that security has taken a nosedive throughout in Afghanistan in the past couple years, but asserts: “In the provinces of Afghanistan adjacent to Central Asia, the security situation has deteriorated even further than in Afghanistan as a whole on average.” That situation presents huge challenges to Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, which could become destabilized by smuggling, Taliban attacks and infiltration by extremists, among other threats. The report suggests some measures Afghanistan and its neighbours can take to mitigate those risks – including sealing borders and negotiating with the Taliban – but of none of them would be easy.

Seven more years

Few African leaders divide international public opinion as much as Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who will run for a third term in office in August, having overwhelmingly won a referendum to change the constitution in 2015. Kagame’s champions see him as the architect of stability and growth in a country where some 20 percent of the population was slaughtered in the 1994 genocide. They point to free basic education for all, the halving of infant and maternal mortality, and the emergence of a vibrant economy as achievements which merit his re-election. Detractors say Kagame’s authoritarian style and intolerance of opposition – some of whose leaders have been killed or disappeared, others accused of the cardinal sin of “genocidal ideology” – is a threat to democracy itself. Further evidence of this came in May, when politicians were told that all social media or online campaign content had to vetted by the National Electoral Commission 48 hours before publication. This rule was shelved a month later in the wake of domestic and international pressure, but the attempt to control the messaging will not be forgotten. Still, Kagame’s re-election is pretty much a foregone conclusion: he won with more than 95 percent in 2003 and 93 percent in 2010. Rwanda’s is one of four key African elections being held this year: the people of Kenya and Angola will also go to the polls in August, while Liberians will follow suit in October.

Lifting the lid on a Mozambique’s loan scandal

As scandals go, Mozambique’s $2.2 billion secret loan deal that crashed its economy was pretty bad (See IRIN’s report). But now we’re getting a handle on just how corrupt it all was. The recently-released executive summary of the Kroll audit report suggests that the Privinest Group – which was supposed to supply Mozambique with a tuna fishing fleet and maritime security vessels – overcharged by at least $700 million. For example, fishing boats were invoiced at $22 million each, but Kroll estimates the real price should have been just $2 million. And there’s more. Kroll says that $500 million “remains unaudited and unexplained”, on top of the $700 million overcharge. That’s partly because Privinest as well as the state security service, SISE, local banks and the Ministry of Finance all refused to provide the auditors with information requested. For more on the scandal, for which Mozambicans are being forced to pay the price as the economy totters and social services are scaled back, check out Mozambique News reports & clippings.

The unpromised land

Few places these days can be described as hospitable towards asylum seekers, but in recent years Israel has outdone most other states with its policies of deterrence and detention. Not content with keeping asylum seekers confined to so-called “open” detention facilities like Holot, starting in 2014, the authorities began offering one-way tickets to “safe” third countries in Africa. By the time IRIN reported on these “voluntary” deportations in April 2015, it was already clear that those who accepted the offer to go to Uganda or Rwanda, the two countries that had quietly stepped up to receive Israel’s unwanted asylum seekers, did not fare much better than those who opted to remain at Holot. This week, a year-long investigation into Israel’s “relocation process” by Andrew Green for Foreign Policy revealed that the vast majority of Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers who are sent to Uganda and Rwanda from Israel are quickly smuggled into neighbouring countries where they have even less protection and live in undocumented limbo. Meanwhile, Ugandan and Rwandan officials continue to deny having made any agreement with Israel to receive asylum seekers.

Watch out for an upcoming IRIN film – Unwelcome Stranger - about the life of a Sudanese asylum seeker in Israel.

Unit 416 by J. Leon Pidgen IIFive tough as nails men. One hard-assed Sergeant. The only chance to change their lives. These are the men of Unit 416 (available July 3, 2017).

Born and raised in America’s hardest streets, five men are faced with the ultimate choice: continue their lives of crime and incarceration or serve their country and join the Army. Master Sergeant Keeble is faced with no good choice: be the leader of a new section called Unit 416 or take him and his surgically-repaired leg out of the game for good. At first, all Keeble has to work with is a ragtag group of men with no regard for the rules and a huge chip on their shoulders. But as the men go through training and more together, they form a group so tight, so formidable, that nothing can break them apart. And when a secretive CIA directive leads them straight into the heart of Uzbekistan to infiltrate an arms cartel, Unit 416’s men will need all the grit, tough—and heart—they have in order to see this mission home.

          The 'Neoconservative' Sufi Muslim Council
The 'Neoconservative' Sufi Muslim Council

Who and what is the "Sufi Muslim Council"? They seem to have emerged from nowhere – suddenly their spokesman is interviewed on Radio 4 and Newsnight and a Channel 4 documentary gives their views some weight. They have a new website and a new magazine. But hardly anyone knows who they are or what they stand for?

We wanted to know the answer to these questions so we set about doing some basic research. We have uncovered very worrying links between this new council and the neocons in Washington. There are also links to some of the most brutal regimes in the world e.g. the Karimov regime in Uzbekistan. We have also unearthed allegations of dodgy business dealings and vote rigging.

The Neocon Link

Just take a look at the SMC website [www.sufimuslimcouncil.org] and the influence of the neocons in Washington becomes very clear. The majority of the content is written by neocons that criticise Islamic groups – 'Wahhabis', the Muslim Brotherhood, MCB, MAB, Hizb ut-Tahrir, Tablighi Jamaat and Jamaati Islami are some of the examples that come in for criticism. There are articles entitled "The Muslim Brotherhood's Conquest of Europe", "Hizb ut-Tahrir – Islam's Political Insurgency" and "Islamic Radicalism – Its Wahhabi roots and current representation".

We found that one of the prominent authors on the SMC website, who also writes for the SMC magazine "Spirit", is Zeyno Baran (left) – a self confessed neocon who works for the ultra right wing Hudson Institute. She is close to the Uzbek regime and close to the oil and gas interests in Washington and Central Asia. She tirelessly does the bidding of the dictatorial regimes of Central Asia by playing down human rights abuses and encouraging western governments to enact draconian measures against Muslims. She has condemned Sheikh Qaradawi and the International Union of Muslim Scholars, amongst others. She says that Islam should play no role in politics and condemns even the mere mention of Islam in the Iraqi and Afghan constitutions.

From our enquiries it seems that for some time now, Baran has been trying to establish a neocon-friendly Muslim organisation in the UK. She has talked of the need to, "provide money and help create the political space for moderate Muslims to organize, publish, broadcast, and translate their work." We also uncovered evidence that she has also held meetings with government officials in the UK, urging them to ban the Muslim Brotherhood and Hizb ut-Tahrir and cease working with Muslim organisations that mix Islam with politics.

What do real Sufis and local Muslim leaders say about the Sufi Muslim council?

In a recent survey of Sufi Muslim Scholars and Imams in the UK none had heard about the SMC or its founders until its launch. Most found it very disturbing that there was no real evidence of real tassawuf in their organisation.

The hard right neocon think tank the Nixon Center published a document by Zeyno Baran which encouraged using Sufism as a means to attack Islam.

Similarly the RAND corporation in their paper Civil Democratic Islam talk of using one group of Muslims against another - Shia vs. Sunni; Sufi vs. Non Sufi. Divide and Rule.

The Kabbani/Jack Straw link

The SMC is closely linked to Shaykh Hisham Kabbani of the Islamic Supreme Council of America (ISCA). The SMC website and magazine are full of Kabbani's writings and Haras Rafiq has admitted that Kabbani is the spiritual leader of the SMC.

On the 29th of April 2005, the head of the Islamic Supreme Council of America (ISCA), Shaykh Hisham Kabbani, met with the then UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw in Blackburn (right). The meeting was also attended by Haras Rafiq and Hedieh Mirahmadi, an apologist for the Uzbek regime and the founder of the neocon "Committee on the Present Danger". She is also a foreign policy analyst at the right-wing neocon think tank, the American Enterprise Institute.

While Britain continued to arm Israel and occupy Iraq, Kabbani, thanked Straw for the role the UK played in the Middle East and said, “We are glad to see changes taking place in the political mechanisms in the Middle East. We hope to see an end to tyranny and we are happy to observe a strong upsurge in freedom of speech, freedom of belief and political openness in the region.”

Most Muslim organisations in the USA, of all schools of thought, have strongly criticised ISCA for its close relationship with the US government and its strange theological positions, including outlandish claims that the late Princess Diana, Prince Charles and Hillary Clinton have all embraced Islam at the hands of the leaders of the ISCA.

Igor Rotar, the Forum 18 News Service Correspondent in Central Asia, has noted that, "The Uzbek government supports close ties with the Islamic Supreme Council of America (ISCA), which embraces Naqshbandi followers in the USA, and plays up its supposed popularity in the Islamic world. Although the number of ISCA members is relatively small, Uzbek propaganda represents ISCA as being one of the most influential Muslim organisations in the United States."

On January 7 1999, Kabbani infuriated the overwhelming majority of Muslims in the US when he gave a clandestine testimony to the State Department in which he claimed 80% of mosques and Muslims in the US were "extremists", Muslims pose a threat to the USA and the US government needs to act quickly and Israeli occupation is legitimate and should be accepted. Only those with State Department security clearance were allowed to attend the event. Following this meeting, all the major US Muslim organisations including CAIR, ISNA, ICNA, AMC, MPAC, AMA, ING, and IAP, issued a statement condemning the ISCA. In a later statement, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, of the Zaytuna Institute, joined the above groups in their condemnation.

Soon after the American invasion of Afghanistan, Kabbani had Iftar with George W Bush and US Secretary of State Colin Powell. There are also photos of meetings with Dick Cheney and Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan (below). The photo of George Bush with Sheikh Kabbani (above) has mysteriously disappeared from the ISCA website, but a trawl through internet archives unearthed it.

Zeyno Baran has enjoyed a very close relationship with the ISCA. In particular she has had a close relationship with Hedieh Mirahmadi, Executive Director of ISCA, a "former top aide" to Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani and a former senior adviser to the US embassy in Kabul. In writing the Nixon Center monograph "Hizb ut-Tahrir: Islam's political insurgency", Baran acknowledges the "tremendous intellectual and personal support" given to her by Mirahmadi.

Mirahmadi (left) is an apologist for one of the most repressive regimes on Earth. About a government that bans all dissent, represses religion and boils dissidents alive, Ms. Mirahmadi had this to say: "We were all grateful to experience for ourselves the spectacular growth of this new republic. We sincerely believe Uzbekistan will be a formidable contributor to Islamic tradition and culture for centuries to come. Their great history and scholarship will preserve the traditional Islamic teachings of our ancestors and deserves the support and acknowledgement of the American Muslim community." These were her words of praise for a viciously repressive government, uttered at the conclusion of her trip to Uzbekistan, where Mirahmadi was feted by the ruthless Uzbek dictator.

Who is behind the SMC?

There is very little publicly available information on the Islamic credentials of the Sufi Muslim Council. Unlike other Muslim groups from across the political spectrum, the leaders of the SMC are either underground or non-existent. Those who write for its magazine are unknown, other than those who work for neocon organisations in the US. Many of the articles in its magazine are just a "cut and paste" from ISCA publications. The most prominent person since its establishment is a guy called Haras Rafiq who originates from Rochdale in Lancashire.

Some may have noticed that the previously unheard of Rafiq has suddenly been giving interviews, claiming to speak for the "silent majority" of Muslims in Britain.

Haras Rafiq has said, "The prime minister and others have on many occasions rightly called for moderate Muslims to stand up and be counted. In response to this call, and following extensive consultations within the Muslim community, we have decided to establish the Sufi Muslim Council."

In most of his interviews, Haras Rafiq, talks a lot about representing 'apolitical' Sufis. However, from our investigations, the majority of Sufis in the UK had never heard of him. In an interview on Radio 4, when asked who supported the SMC, he did however say that they were supported by the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

We did find evidence of Haras Rafiq's involvement in Bridges TV UK, a company incorporated on 24th August 2004. Reports suggest that it was envisaged that this would be a "Muslim version of Sky One". They have been involved in a trademark dispute with Bridges Network in the US. Contrary to an agreement with Bridges Network, Rafiq registered Bridges TV UK as a trademark in the UK in March 2005. The US district court in New York ruled against Rafiq in January 2006 and granted a temporary restraining order. Soon after that ruling, Bridges Network UK Limited changed its name at Companies House to Crescent Network UK Limited. Rafiq is also listed at Companies House as being the Director and Secretary of the little known Bury based Communications 4 Business Limited.

It is also noteworthy that the 'apolitical' Haras Rafiq also supported Labour Friends of Israel MP Lorna Fitzsimmons' re-election campaign in Rochdale in the 2005 general election.

Rafiq was also presented in Martin Bright's Channel 4 documentary "Who Speaks for British Muslims?" In that documentary, Bright and Rafiq, said that the majority of Muslims were Sufis and 'apolitical'. Not much evidence was brought to substantiate that contention, but it was clear that Bright wanted Western politicians to utilise 'apolitical' Sufis to soften condemnation of Western foreign policy.

The other person who appears in a photo (right) with Haras Rafiq and the Labour Communities Secretary, Ruth Kelly, at the 'apolitical' SMC launch in Parliament is the staunch Blair supporter, Azhar Ali, a former Labour councillor in Lancashire. He stood for the Labour NEC elections in July 2006.

The Labour party website makes no mention of Ali's new found interest in Sufism, merely stating, "Azhar has been a community activist since 1984 when he became NUS President at his local college, and a Labour party activist since the early 1990s. Azhar's politics have been shaped by living in a mill town in Lancashire hit hard by Thatcherite policies which led to urban and social decay." [http://www.labourhome.org/tag/Azhar%20Ali]

Not surprisingly, no mention is made of allegations in the Guardian of vote rigging involving Ali: "The Guardian counted at least 96 [declarations of identity] which were witnessed by Mr Iqbal, and dozens which were witnessed by Azhar Ali, Labour's leader on the council. On behalf of both councillors, Mr Iqbal denied that this was improper practice."

Speaking in Parliament, Lord Greaves, said, "I have a file of more than 100 cases in which we believe that either declarations or signatures—by either the witness or the voter—were forged. I have photocopies of them here. I do not understand why the police have not been able to deal with the evidence that we have provided."

Conclusion

We set out to discover who and what the SMC was about. We have uncovered very worrying links between this new council and the neocons in Washington, links to some of the most brutal regimes in the world and allegations of dodgy business dealings and vote rigging.

The SMC state, "We appeal to UK based Muslim organisations to openly disclose their ties to foreign groups and movements."

After this investigation, will they now disclose the full extent of their links to the neocons in Washington and Blair's new Labour? Or do they think the Muslims will be fooled by a Parliament launch, a magazine and the odd press release?

We will continue to watch the SMC's every move and will continue to expose its links to the neocons in Washington.

Riforma.it

The problem of terrorism in India or The curse of terrorism

THE PROBLEM OF TERRORISM IN INDIA
                                     OR
       THE CURSE OF TERRORISM
Terrorism means ‘to use terror-inspiring methods by terrorists to force a government or a community to make them agree to fulfill their demand.’  When a group of persons want to have an independent state, they attack the established government with arms and ammunition. Such persons are called terrorists. They disturb the peace of the state and the people. They kill innocent persons and peace-loving community and thus create terror in the hearts of people. Now-a-days terrorism has become a perennial problem for many countries of the world. India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Serbia, Uzbekistan etc., are some of the countries, that are suffering from this problem. There are some countries of the world that prepare terrorists. They give them training in arms and other necessary things for their training and living. Then they send them to their neighboring countries only to create trouble there.
During the British rule, a group of young persons, inspired by patriotic feelings killed many English men, who oppressed our countrymen. These patriotic young men were called terrorists by the British government in India. But for Indians those patriotic youngmen were freedom-fighters. They are called martyrs and are remembered with great respect by the Indians. But the terrorism of today is quite different. It is against humanity. The terrorists of today are killing innocent persons for their selfish aim. Minor success of some evil persons in the achievements of their aims inspires others to follow it.
In India, terrorism has prevailed in North-eastern states in Nagaland, Mizoram, Assam and Tripura. In Jammu and Kashmir and some times inPunjab, Pakistan has been creating a great trouble and terror. This country has been sending terrorists into our country for many years. It has been supporting them with arms and ammunitions, money and training. The aim of this country is to annex Jammu and Kashmir through creating terror in our country. Thousands of lives of peace-loving people are killed. So it is the duty of every government to crush terrorism with an iron hand. An international conference should be held to deal with this problem of terror under the sponsorship of the United Nations. Peace and prosperity can prevail if terrorism is ended..

          Bunga Raksasa Untuk Kekasih

Cinta memang buta. Beginilah rasanya jika sedang mabuk cinta.

Three-Card Monte by Whit Haydn and Chef Anton
Three-Card Monte by Whit Haydn and Chef Anton

Three-Card Monte by Whit Haydn and Chef Anton

The School for Scoundrels DVD Three-Card Monte contains close to three hours of video on two discs, including fine-point instruction in all the major moves, psychology, and misdirection used in the monte, plus a three-camera shoot on the street of a reenactment of Cracker Parker’s London mob scam, an interview with Gazzo discussing the methods of the London Mob, and actual footage of three-card monte being played on the streets in Khiva, Uzbekistan.

The DVD also contains Chef Anton’s complete presentation and explanation of Three-Card Gold, an excellent, unique exhibition routine created by Chef and Whit Haydn.

Also on this DVD are appearances by Gazzo, R. Paul Wilson, and Doc Eason discussing their original handlings of the climax of the monte in exhibition, as well as a unique contribution to the bent corner ruse from Ron Wohl.

Whit Haydn demonstrates and explains Bob Kohler’s incredible ending for the monte, called Knifed! In this sensational ending, the performer has the spectator hold on to a quarter of the Ace, and pin the rest of the Ace facedown with a pocketknife. Even so, the Ace escapes. The spectator ends up holding on to a quarter of the Joker, and the penknife is stuck firmly through three-quarters of a Joker! Bob has worked out every detail of this ending to make it practical, certain, and a real killer.

Further, both DVD’s can be opened in a computer as data discs. Inside is found a complete non-printable e-book (.pdf file) version of our most recent edition of the book The School for Scoundrels Notes on Three-Card Monte. This book contains over 160 pages and more than 180 photos and illustrations, and contains a ton of material on the patter, psychology, moves, glossary, history, and application to magic of three-card monte. Most authorities consider this book to be the best resource on the monte to date:

What People are Saying:

“If you’ve missed anything, I can’t find it! Your historical research is astounding.”

--Gary Ouellet

“This is clearly the definitive book on three-card monte. Nothing else even comes close.”

--Darwin Ortiz

The School for Scoundrels Notes on Three-Card Monte is the best resource for information on this con that I have ever read.”

--Michael Close

“This is the best single reference on the Monte to date.”

--Jamy Ian Swiss

Also included on the ROM section of the discs is an historical appendix containing a collection of interesting and printable photos, and long passages from several of the most important primary sources on the monte, including eye-witness accounts of three-card monte being played in the nineteenth century from “Beyond the Mississippi,” and “Wanderings of a Vagabond,” as well as George Devol’s defense of Canada Bill Jones from “Forty Years a Gambler on the Mississippi,” and Allan Pinkerton’s eye-witness account of Canada Bill in action from “Criminal Reminiscences and Detective Sketches.”

Both the video and ROM portions of the disc are meant to provide the student of three-card monte with the most complete, accessible, and illuminating resource on the game ever offered. Much of the information contained in this set is original and/or unpublished.

Whether you are a magician, gambling expert, historian, or hustler—everything you need to become a true “expert” on the game is right here in this two-volume DVD.

          Wikipedia Against Censorship
Wikipedia’s Fight Against Censorship
wikipedia

If you tried to search for Emma Watson’s Wikpedia page in Iran in 2013, you wouldn’t have been able to find it; the article was one of 963 blocked by the government. This tidbit about the Harry Potter actress is found in a 2013 University of Pennsylvania report on Iran’s censorship of Wikipedia. Researchers at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society recently built on this publication by analyzing censorship of the site in 15 countries since 2014. In a report published in May, they found that censorship of Wikipedia has declined since then due to the site’s new security measures.

In fact, they discovered that only three countries blocked access to parts of Wikipedia during the duration of the study: China and Uzbekistan were blocking the Chinese- and Uzbek-language versions of Wikipedia (read more coverage of censorship in China, and its use of fake social media posts to influence public opinion). Thailand had once blocked the Yiddish version—most likely “a weird misconfiguration,” says Justin Clark, a software developer at the center and the principal author of the report. They derived their results partly by analyzing data from the Wikimedia Foundation (Wikipedia’s parent organization) that showed when people load Wikipedia articles, and partly from 41 servers located in different countries around the world that tried to load Wikipedia and could determine if the website was blocked.

Clark says there are multiple reasons for the changing levels of censorship. The first is Wikipedia’s transition from HTTP to HTTPS. HTTP (“hypertext transfer protocol”) guides the way a website’s data is sent to a browser. Because the connection is unencrypted, however, other people can intercept that connection and see the data being sent. In HTTPS, the “s” stands for “secure”; the major difference between the two protocols is that HTTPS encrypts the data being communicated.

Wikipedia’s transition affected the way countries could block access, Clark explains. With HTTP, a country could block an individual Wikipedia article. But with HTTPS, the country needs to choose between blocking every article or none. Countries are choosing the latter. As the report states: “Russia once again blacklisted Wikipedia over a single cannabis-related article, but the ban was reversed less than 24 hours later.”

Monitoring censorship of Wikipedia matters because “Wikipedia is one of the most prominent, and most important, sites out there,” says Rob Faris, the research director at the center, who also worked on the report. “How countries treat Wikipedia,” he continues, is indicative of how important Internet freedom is not only to them, but also to the rest of the world. Clark adds that understanding the information controls imposed on the Internet is “important for allowing an informed citizenry to emerge.”

As the first “complete empirical deep dive into incidents of the blocking of Wikipedia projects around the world,” Faris says, the report will inform future research as other investigators follow its methods. He also notes that accessing Wikipedia server data is novel. Such research paves the way for examining global Internet outages, Clark says, especially those deliberately caused by countries during elections or protests. He adds that after the study concluded, China blocked access to Wikipedia in additional languages spoken there, and Turkey in all languages, so the Berkman Klein Center will “continue to monitor Wikipedia around the world.”

          UNCTAD Investment Policy Monitor
In the March 2017 issue of its Investment Policy Monitor, UNCTAD reports that, during the review period (October 2016-February 2017), several countries took noteworthy investment policy measures at a national level. Among them are the issuance of a comprehensive circular to attract foreign investment in China. Another important featrure was new privatisation measures in France, Greece, South-Korea, The Netherlands and the Russian Federation. On the other hand, Indonesia introduced a foreign ownership limit on electronic payment service firms.

The universe of international investment agreements (IIAs) is expanding, as countries continue to sign and negotiate new IIAs, including megaregional initiatives. During the reporting period, countries concluded 11 bilateral investment treaties and 2 treaties with investment provisions, bringing the total of IIAs to over 3,300.

NATIONAL INVESTMENT POLICIES

Entry/Establishment of investment

18 countries - Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, (South-) Korea, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Romania, Russian Federation, United States of America, Uzbekistan ad Viet Nam -adopted new policy measures relating to the entry and establishment of foreign investors. The majority of them relaxed restrictions on foreign ownership or opened up new business opportunities.

Among the most noteworthy investment liberalisation measures are:

* China issued a circulat setting out the blueprint for its policies on attracting foreign investment. Inter alia, the Government decided to revise the "Catalogue for the Guidance of Foreign Investment industries", and to further open various industries.

* The Central Bank of India amended regulations in order to further liberalise and rationalise the investment regime for foreign venture capital investors and to encourage foreign investment in startups.

New regulatory or restrictive investment-related policy measures included:

* Indonesia imposed a 20% limit on foreign ownership in companies that offer electronic payment services

* The United States prohibited the acquisition of a U.S. subsidiary of Aixtron by a Chinese company on the basis of national security concerns.

Treatment of established investment

10 countries - Argentina, China, Colombia, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Myanmar, Poland and Romania - took measures with respect to the treatment of investors after establishment in the host country. For example:

* Indonesia increased the minimum local content requirement for domestically-produced 4G smartphones that are sold in the Indonesian market from 20% to 30%.

* Myanmar revoked the ceiling on the amount of funds that foreign-local joint venture trading firms can use in their operations. This removes the obligation to register any additional amounts of foreign currency required for investment purposes.

MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL PRESENTS: "Punk From The Middle East And Asia"

Last year Maximum Rocknroll had a fundraiser of sorts for their record archive. It passed a "collection" many years ago, and has evolved into one of the most comprehensive archives of punk vinyl in the world, well over 50,000 records (and growing). The funds were raised to help create a database (that will include original reviews, and will be free and searchable) and curate the existing archive - it was (is) a shitload of work, and shitloads ain't free, you know? Various incentives were offered to encourage donations, including mix tapes....giver's choice. Some enterprising (and brilliant) fukkr asked for the following tape: "one side Asia (non-Japan), one side Middle East." Well played, punk rocker. Archive coordinator Shivaun crushed this mixtape, and I hope that you will be as thrilled as I was digging on the gems she uncovered from all over the damned place. Not surprisingly, Tian An Men 89 Records makes several contributions (I mean, come on - of course that's the first place you look, right?), but Pakistani grindcore? OK....I'm sold. Bands from: Syria, India, Uzbekistan, Iran, Turkey, Singapore, Armenia, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Algeria, Israel, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, Sound Korea, Lebanon, Morocco and United Arab Emirates.

          Yurt Life
We are moving into my mom's charming little yurt today!

While waiting for our permanent home to be renovated (which, as it turns out, takes even longer than building a new home) - we've been living semi-nomadic life for close to four months now, about three of them in a yurt.

Life in the yurt is different. There is no way around it (pun intended). For one thing, it provides a round space, that encompasses most of life's functions in one area: cooking, eating, reading, puzzling, snuggling, cat-feeding (an extra duty we've picked up on the way to freedom - not unlike an unwanted pregnancy that you just can't get herself to terminate), office work (whenever my MacBook Air has enough power to work for me - not to mention its battered battery now needs replacement, which turns out to be a HUGE ordeal in the land of milk and honey), Pilates practice, and even occasional entertaining (when it rains even my dear family avoids it like the plague). It's not truly all in one space, because it actually has an annex to the north, with the washroom (including a shower and a compost toilet - a killer combination for dirt and cleanliness), as well as a sleeping den which has beautiful greenery all around it, as it is built from old wooden windows.

That beauty comes with the price of this space being as cold as the outdoors in the winter. In the summer this room is actually a lifesaver, because the yurt collects way too much heat, although it is much better insulated than the sleeping den - even when its skylight is open. We don't have an oven, but were able to pull together delicious and nourishing meals from the two-flamed gas stove, and have even prepared some raw treats for our daily tea parties. To be perfectly frank - mostly, we've been lazy and buying baklava and cookies whenever we are in the vicinity of a bakery - so I am now in the know of where to get good baked goods. I'm sure this knowledge will come in handy in the not so far future, even after we're back to our productive baking life. When it comes to baking, it's always good to have a good back-up plan.

Of course, that did not stop us from being experimental in the kitchen, trying new ingredients such as nigella seed spread and authentic freekeh, which is an amazing way of preparing green wheatberries by burning them off the wheat chaff. The result is a smoky, nutty grain that is delicious and easy to cook (and digest) and really gives unmistakable character to dishes (the one I bought in Canada was actually stale wheat dyed green). More on that in another post!

To sum it up - living in a yurt is "an experience". Just like camping is an experience. In camping terms this is a five star facility. I'm sure with its running water and gas-operated refrigerator it is also considered a luxury in comparison to straw huts in Africa or yurts in the Mongolian steppes. You get the picture. It's an experience. And we're three months into it and can't wait to experience something else.

To lift the edge off the nervous anticipation for proper housing, I've decided to compile a little list of fragrances (both mundane and wearable) that will let you into this experience, even if just a little... This compilation is a random array of fragrance fit for yurt life, even though I imagine most people who choose to live in this humble abode would rather dab some animal fat and cooked cabbage juice behind their ear than any designer's fragrance. Nevertheless, I find the task amusing, and I hope it will make for a fun read.

We are moving into my mom's charming little yurt today! Here is a view of the inside.

I also hope that my mom does not get hurt because apparently in our parts of the world, patience ("Savlanut") is considered a virtue (which very few uphold), and also belongs grammatical to the same root as the word suffering ("Sevel"). And in this part of the world, stating the facts is considered complaining... I'm sure those who choose to live in a yurt or even just stay in it for a short amount of time will thoroughly enjoy it - it is cute, rustic, pretty, calm and completely in tune with nature. You get to experience all the elements - fire (sun), air (wind), water (we have running water, and thankfully also very little of water leakage despite its very temporary feel); and last but not least - you can't get any closer to earth than this. It is a very, very earthy dwelling and you really feel Mother earth's belly as you tickle it with your slippers walking to and fro. Last but not least: nothing compares to coming out of the yurt at night and seeing the clear black skies dotted with bright stars.

Muscs Kublai Khan - for the obvious body odour effect - musk-enhanced unwashed hair and sweaty armpits with hints of rose and aldehydes.

Kiehl's Fig Leaf & Sage - milky herbacous weirdness. It's unusual yet very easy to wear and has a freshness without being boring. It also goes well with the cucumber and parsley scented products we currently have in the house - hand wash, shampoo and conditioner. Something green and clear-smelling yet non pretentious.

Aromatics Elixir - an earthy, big sage scent that is sophisticated yet at the same time rustic enough to wear in the wilderness. Especially grateful for it on cold wintry days.

Arabie - the spice market, sweat and dusty cobblestones - and all the spices I have in storage (and don't have in my kitchen) kvetched into one bottle. Awesome.

Coco Noir - the opposite of yurt life: polished, elegant, artificial and urban. Jasmine, berries and plums, rose, patchouli, musk and vetiver with a a dusting of cocoa.

Poivre Samarkand - because I heard that there are also yurts in Samarkand (Uzbekistan). Can't find any perfume inspired by Mongolia (which is where the yurts supposedly originate). Besides, it's a perfect sprinkle of heat on those chilly nights when the shower runs only boiling water or ice cold ones, and when you step out of the shower it's the same temperatures as outside (not as extreme as in Canada, but 5-11c is cold enough to feel like real winter).

Musc Nomade (Annick Goutal) - I'm picking this one because of the name alone. I remember smelling it very vaguely and that is was vegetal and delicate... Admittedly I'm also too lazy to go digging in my shipping container now and find the little box where I "filed" all my music samples but I'm pretty sure I've only tried it once when I was in Paris.

Tam Dao - if you've ever encountered compost toilet, you know that it's the human equivalent of hamster cage. pine or cedar shavings are used to cover up the mess, and the result is a more subdued version of human waste, that eventually turns into a nice scent of the forest floor. Anyway, this explanation made me think of Tam Dao, which is a fine sandalwood and cedar fragrance and also has some clean smelling musks underneath, to make you forget all the other business.

Tea for Two - We've been enjoying my limited selection of teas that I make a point of finishing off. True to form, we've been brewing lots of chai, which I've been already giving you plenty of recipes for... And of course Hulnejan - the wonderful root brew of galangal, dried ginger and cassia bark.
Zangvil also reminds me of this "witch brew" with its notes of fresh and dried ginger, honey, amber, jasmine and ginger lily.

Finjan - we've been drinking lots of espresso on the stove top mocha machine, and lots of Arabic/Druze/Turkish coffee (each nationality claims it as their own - but essentially this is very dark roasted coffee with cardamom that is brewed on the stove). The latter is well represented in the perfuem I created titled Finjan (the name of the little porcelain "shot" cups that you sip the coffee from; mistakenly, most Israelis refer to the little pot used to brew it as "finjan" - but its real name is "Ralai").

Mastic - Whenever it rains or gets really chilly, the mastica bushes and wild ivy behind the yurt release their fresh, green-balsamic scent. Grin's smell encompasses this verdant freshness with its notes of galbanum, violet, oakmoss and a classic floral bouquet.

Geranium and Wild Oranges - My citrus orchard was overcome by wild orange shoots, and I've really let it go. We finally pruned the orchard this fall, which mean an overwhelming amount of wild oranges that had to be put into use somehow. The result? An orange cello with a touch of herbs from the yurt's garden, among them rose geranium. One sip of this liquor is enough to uplift the spirits.

E-Card registration fee reduced registration numbers: MEF
PETALING JAYA: The action by the Immigration Department in imposing almost RM600 to apply for the Enforcement Card (E-Card) are among the factors that had stopped employers from registering undocumented workers sooner, claimed Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) executive director Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan.

Shamsuddin claimed that the Immigration Department had initially not imposed any charge during the implementation of the E-Card registration system before the government decided to impose the fee.

"When employers are asked to pay even half of the processing fees, they will not be interested as they do not know whether the workers that they register can be employed again," he told theSun when contacted today.

He further described the E-Card system as "pretty much" similar with the previous system implemented by the Immigration Department.

"Thus when a similar system is in place not many employers would be interested in registering their undocumented workers because what the government wants employers to do is for them to come to the Immigration counters and admit that they have undocumented workers," he said.

The MEF, he said, had proposed that undocumented workers themselves register with the Immigration Department instead of the employers.

"The proposal was to allow employers the opportunity to recruit documented workers upon registration. However, the same system is applied instead," he said.

However, Shamsuddin added that employers who failed to register their undocumented workers in time would have to face the full brunt of the law.

Following the end of the E-Card registration deadline on Friday, Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali announced that 1,035 undocumented workers including 101 women, three children and 16 employers were detained on Saturday in a nationwide operation.

The majority of the workers were from Bangladesh (515), followed by Indonesia (135), Myanmar (102), the Philippines (50), Thailand (five) and Vietnam (two).

The E-Card, valid until Feb 15 next year, is to enable employers to apply and rehire the foreigners legally in addressing shortages in several key economic sectors.

Only 97,469 cards were issued between Feb 15 and May 31, although there are 400,000 to 500,000 workers.

The deadline will not be extended and employers were warned that the department will go on a nationwide crackdown on the undocumented workers on July 1.

The E-Card is only for workers from 15 countries — Bangladesh, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Sempat Populer, Bra Peluru Ini Digemari Para Aktris Hollywood
