Water Street Tampa will go vertical in fall
A joint venture linking Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and hockey team owner Jeffrey Vinik expects to break ground this year for a $3 billion redevelopment of 50 acres along the waterfront in downtown Tampa. Strategic Property Partners (SPP), a joint venture between Gates’s Cascade Investment, LLC, and Vinik, the owner of the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning, plans the mixed-use, multi-phase development spanning nine million square feet, called Water Street Tampa. It says that no matter what happens there are going to be terrible wars, there are going to be diseases, whole nations are going to be wiped out, there are going to be 3 days darkness, there are going to be epidemics that will wipe out whole nations overnight (great culling), parts of the earth will be washed away at sea and violent tornadoes and storms. It's not a nice message at all." ~Fr Malachi Martin on portions of the real 3rd secret of Fatima
My oh my, we may be getting glimpse into how the Deep State will ultimately respond to the extreme scrutiny that they are undergoing. The Deep State is losing control of the narrative and they desperately need a game-changer. And the following may very well represent what is coming.

Bill Gates and the Discovery Channel are Promoting a New Show on Pandemics As a Threat to Humanity

The Discovery Channel is airing a show on July 6th which details how easy it would be for a pandemic to wipe out a significant amount of humanity. The content of the show is not newsworthy unto itself. However, when they bring the richest man in the world, who has made a large portion of his wealth from vaccines, come in and promote the show’s trailer, namely Bill Gates, that is worth noting.
Bill Gates is certainly no stranger to the subject of pandemics and it is interesting that he is featured in such a prominent manner.

If I wanted to obtain credibility on a widespread basis, I would not be selecting Bill Gates to promote anything that has to do with health, particularly in the arena of health administration. The old saying, “with friends like this, who needs enemies”, certainly applies. Please consider what Bill Gates previously did on a mass scale to young women in India. The following is from Natural News:
“In 2009, the tribal children of the Khammam district in Andhra Pradesh were gathered together and told they would be receiving healthcare shots. Even though the Gates foundation has the wealth to give these tribes access to clean water, sanitation services, nutrition and low stress living conditions, they instead push for HPV vaccines and call them “well-being” shots. The shot these young girls received was an HPV vaccine manufactured by Merck and administered by the state’s health department. The young girls, aged 9–15, were instructed to line up for three doses of the vaccine. As the months rolled on, the health of the 16,000 girls rapidly deteriorated. Five of the girls died shortly thereafter.
In Vadodara, Gujarat, another 14,000 or more tribal children were put to the test. This time the Gates Foundation carried out their humanitarian healthcare mission by providing the HPV vaccine called Cervarix, made by Glaxo SmithKline.
Giving no informed consent, the Gates Foundation coerced the tribal people on the belief that the shots were beneficial and necessary. However, when virus material, heavy metals and other preservatives foreign to the body are injected into young, developing women, drastic changes are bound to occur in their bodies. Having no idea that they were being signed up for vaccine trials, thousands of young girls were injected with these experimental vaccines purported to prevent cervical cancer.
Instead of seeing their health improve, the tribes reported numerous, bizarre adverse events in the days, weeks and months following vaccination. Young girls in India lost weight, appetite and stamina. 16-year-old Aman Dhawan had no idea he was even signed up for the vaccine trial. Soon thereafter he began to lose weight and energy, as the life was sucked right out of him. The same problem broke out among girls in Colombia, where the same vaccine had been doled out to the young girls there”.
Again, with friends like this, who needs enemies?

A New Pandemic Is the Fulfillment of Gates Self-Appointed Destiny

On February 28, 2013, Bill Gates appeared on the Charlie Rose Show and he was as candid as a globalist could be. On the show, Gates indicated that he has contributed large sums of money to numerous causes such as the Global Polio Eradication Initiative originally launched in 1988 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the CDC, and UNICEF.
Gates expressed his love affair with vaccines and his clear intention to reduce the world’s population when he stated the following:
“The world today has 6.8 billion people… that’s headed up to about 9 billion. Now if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by perhaps 10 or 15 percent.”

Quite clearly, Gates is a devoted subscriber to Eugenics and depopulation. On his television show, Charlie Rose asked Gates the following question:

“You mentioned the five or a six year plan the new initiative has learning from old lessons and therefore, coming up with new approaches. What are the new approaches?”
To that question, Bill Gates answered:
“Well, we’re able to use new technology like satellite photos to see are there people moving around, nomadic roots. You know we see if when we go out to get all the children, if there’s some settlement areas that we’ve actually missed. We also put a – – a phone in the vaccine box they carry around that looks where they’re located every three minutes and so it has that GPS data. At the end of the day you plug that in and compare it to where they were asked to go, and you can see if you’re – you’re really covering all the kids.”
Gates is clearly advocating for an extreme Orwellian society that will be monitored and targeted for vaccinations that do more harm than good. The ultimate goal is depopulation, not saving lives. Unfortunately for the fate of humanity, Gates seems to know something ominous is coming our way when we consider what Gates recently wrote in the New York Times.

Bill Gates Writes for the New York Times

On March 18, 2015, the King of vaccinations  wrote an editorial piece in the New York Times in which he stated that the “Ebola epidemic in West Africa has killed more than 10,000 people. If anything good can come from this continuing tragedy, it is that Ebola can awaken the world to a sobering fact: We are simply not prepared to deal with a global epidemic“.
Gates also stated the following:
“As menacing as Ebola was this past year, other pandemics are a greater threat to the human race.
The Ebola epidemic in West Africa has killed more than 10,000 people. If anything good can come from this continuing tragedy, it is that Ebola can awaken the world to a sobering fact: We are simply not prepared to deal with a global epidemic.
Of all the things that could kill more than 10 million people around the world…there are many things worse than Ebola”
Gates spoke about the deadly Spanish Flu and other epidemics which could (probably will) serve to threaten humanity. Frighteningly and prophetically, Gates is advocating for the United Nations should “fund a global institution” to coordinate the efforts to conduct mass vaccinations. Would anyone like to place a bet that the new round of vaccinations will be mandatory? The United Nations and the World Health Organization would be in charge according to Gates. After all, according to Gates, Ebola was terrible, but next time, “it could be much worse“.

Gates Has Already Put His Money Where His Mouth Is

Can we only imagine the enormous profits that can be realized by vaccinating every child in the third world? If we apply Gates’ penchant for investing in causes which produce a hefty “return on investment” (ROI) then one could reasonably suspect that Gates is positioning himself to profit on the $50 million he has invested in the Ebola cause which conveniently includes the CDC, the holder of the patent for Ebola and this is just one small example of how Gates has positioned himself to enormously profit from a pandemic:

“When an unsuspecting public is finally told of the existence of an Ebola vaccine, coupled with the fact that the Global Fund will be in charge of the distribution of the vaccine. Interestingly, Bill Gates has donated a total of $560 million dollars to the Global Fund. The Global Fund has also positioned themselves to be in charge of the distribution of the “newly developed”, and not yet announced vaccines for TB and HIV.  Since the goal is the vaccination of every man, woman and child on the planet with multiple vaccines, Gates’ $560 million contribution to the Global Fund is chump change compared to the expected ROI…”

If one really wants to get conspiratorial, consider that back in 2014 I previously published an article entitled:

The CDC, NIH & Bill Gates Own the Patents On Existing Ebola & Related Vaccines: Mandatory Vaccinations Are Near

Predictive Programming Supports Gates’ Prepositioning to Profit from an Engineered Pandemic

TNT is currently home to a very popular show known as The Last Ship. From a technical standpoint, the show is very well constructed particularly with regard to the military protocols embedded within the story line. The show is based on an engineered pandemic which sweeps the planet and destroys 80% of humanity. Interestingly, the show contains a sub-theme in which a group of people who are immune to the pandemic, ban together to try and form a “master race”  and also kill off the vulnerable at the same time as they try and enhance the spreading of the pandemic.
In the show’s plot a “vaccine” is developed as a cure. Bill Gates must be jumping up and down for joy at the storyline since this man virtually controls all vaccines on the planet.  Here is a further description of the show which takes on new meaning now that the discussion of a potential pandemic is taking place in combination with the Discovery Channel’s exploration, guided by Gates, into this topic. Here is a brief discussion of the show, The Last Ship.

In the first three seasons of the Last Ship, it has always debuted in June. I find it more than interesting that the season premiere has been delayed until after the Discovery Channel’s show with Bill Gates on pandemics.
TNT has chosen Sunday, August 20th,  for the fourth season premiere of its epic drama series The Last Ship. Also, I find it interesting that the show was renewed for two years which guarantees a 5th year. When have you ever seen a show be renewed for two years at a time?

Conclusion

If I were to don my conspiracy hat, which is easy to do when Bill Gates is in the neighborhood, it appears that humanity being prepared for the inevitable pandemic which will wipe out any real resistance to the Deep State.
What does this mean for the United States and for your family. Fortunately, the Obama administration left behind several documents which tells us what we are all facing and this will the future topic of these particular revelations. In the meantime, monitor your news for preliminary snippets of a coming pandemic.

Jim Allchin's PDC 2005 Keynote Highlights

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/evjen/archive/2005/09/13/53712.aspx

After Bill Gates spoke, Jim Allchin came out and gave a presentation geared at developers with the promise of showing lots of code (which was done by Don Box and company). Here are some of the highlights from Jim's presentation:

  • First Jim showed everyone an IBM computer from the Microsoft museum with Windows 1.03 loaded. He then showed us the OS booting up and then pulled up the game of Reversi. Funny, I remember all those screens he showed ... I must be getting old. The point of showing that is that he was focusing on the fact that Windows was entering into its 3rd decade. Wow! Then he showed a game (video of it really) that was being built by a company called Crytex and how outstanding (or SUPER as Microsoft people would say) it was with graphics. It was rather spectacular.
  • Jim announced that we are all getting Build 5219 of Vista today.
  • The Windows platform consists of Presentation, Data, Communications, and Base Operating System Services.
  • Vista will include hardware monitoring.
  • Vista will require 50% less reboots.
  • Vista will allow for fast on/off cycles.
  • There will be a reboot manager in Vista.
  • There will not be a defrag available in Vista as this is something that should automatically be done by the OS. Therefore, Vista will be defragging in the background on its own.
  • Introducing SuperFetch - knows what you work with the most (such as Outlook) and loads it into memory for you in anticipation of you working with it and therefore will have a SUPER fast launch process.
  • Using a USB memory stick will allow Vista to add it to the larger pool of available memory for the computer! Wow.
  • Hotmail will be changed soon so that it is more like Windows Outlook Web Access.
  • Introducing Atlas - an AJAX style (I was surprised he used this word actually) web development.
  • Introducing WPF/E “Everywhere“ - a slimmed down version of WPF that will work everywhere (devices).

Then Jim mentioned to the crowd that he had a “limited” number of these great devices that he used in a demo which were normally $1000 and that we would get it for $149 from ComNet. Once he said that, 1,500 people got up and ran for the door - it was rather funny! I would have kept that news till the end if I were him. Oh well - lesson learned.

          The Goods!

After Bill Gates keynote, Microsoft allowed us to go down to the distribution center and receive “The Goods” as they call it.

This is a five disc set which includes a mass amount of software including:

  • Windows Vista Beta 1
  • Visual Studio 2005 Team System Beta 2
  • SQL Server 2005 June CTP
  • Virtual PC 2004
  • Virtual Server 2005 R2 Beta
  • WinFX & Other Stuff
  • Windows Vista CTP: PDC 2005

There is a spot for a sixth disc, but it is empty in my set. I am unsure if that is intentional or if there wasn't even a sixth disc. Hmmm.

The CBCP’s fake idea that the poor are “blessed” is the reason the Philippines remains poor
To Filipinos, rich people are “evil” and a life focused on the acquisition of money is a life to be ashamed of. And so there really is no reason to continue wondering why Filipinos remain an impoverished people today. The very idea of aspiring to be rich seems, to Filipinos, to be a thought to be purged from their minds.
Rather, Filipinos justify their poverty using the very Catholic idea that to be poor is to be “blessed” before the eyes of God. Indeed, if I were to choose one fake idea ingrained by the Roman Catholic Church in the mind of the Filipino that did the biggest damage to their psyche, it would be that one. Unfortunately for Filipinos, such wealth-destroying ideas continue to be peddled by their Roman Catholic Church. Filipinos are subject to a constant bombardment of poverty-blessedness drivel everywhere they tune their eardrums and plant their eyeballs — in the Catholic masses they troop to every Sunday, the telenovelas and Filipino films they are addicted to, and the victim-heroes their “activists” and politicians put up for worship.
The irony that seems to fly above the heads of Filipinos’ poverty-worshipping and wealth-demonising “activists” and politicians is that it is the highly-focused pursuit of capital accumulation (a.k.a. wealth creation) that enabled human civilisation to build the very devices and Web services that allow them to Tweet and Share their poverty porn. Contrary to popular belief, Silicon Valley’s titans are no latte-sipping liberals whose idea of “making a difference” in the world is sitting in a Starbucks café waxing poetic about “world peace” and sending relief goods to war refugees. Bill Gates wanted to dominate our desktop PCs with his software, Steve Jobs wanted to make computers that appeal to affluent artsy people, Zuck wanted to pickup chicks on the Internet, Jack Dorsey wanted to build a Facebook-killer people could use from their mobile phones, and Sergey Brin sought to organise humanity’s collective knowledge into a giant database.
In case I missed some kind of Catholic pastoral letter on the subject, I really can’t see what is so “evil” about what these five brilliant — and mega-rich — human beings did.
Indeed, as much as Filipinos would like to attribute everything that is wrong with their society to the “evil” devices of 16th-Century Imperial Spain, it was Spain’s pursuit of gold that brought their ships to the beaches of Cebu and the building of the city of Vigan (among other architectural wonders) that Filipinos now put up as the “pride” of “their” tourism industry. Perhaps, in some fairness to the Catholic Church, there is some evidence that the Spanish conquistadores found the natives of the islands in pretty much the same state as the way Filipinos are even today in 21st Century Philippines.
In his Inquirer column, Ambeth Ocampo writes how painfully-relevant the observations made by the Spaniards on the natives they found in the Philippines are to this day…
When I was a student, everything bad in our character was blamed on the colonial experience: on Spain, the United States and Japan. Reading Legazpi made me wonder if we had always been the way we are:
“These people declare war among themselves at the slightest provocation, or with none whatever. All those who have not made a treaty of peace with them, or drawn blood with them, are considered as enemies. Privateering and robbery have a natural attraction for them. Whenever the occasion presents itself, they rob one another, even if they be neighbors or relatives; and when they see and meet one another in the open fields at nightfall, they rob and seize one another. Many times it happens that half of a community is at peace with half of a neighboring community, while the other halves are at war. They assault and seize one another; nor do they have any order or arrangement in anything. All their skill is employed in setting ambuscades and laying snares to seize and capture one another, and they always try to attack with safety and advantage to themselves.”
To some degree this revelation that Filipinos already possessed the Poor DNA before the “evil” Spaniards arrived absolves the Roman Catholic Church of some accountability for why Filipinos are imprisoned by impoverished thinking today. But armed with all this hindsight that guys like Ocampo are kind enough to share with us today, there really is no excusing the Catholic Church and its henchmen in the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) continuing to propagate its brain-damaging fake ideas today.
There is much to be done. As the old cliché goes, you gotta think rich to become rich. Filipinos need to purge their culture of memetic relics that contribute to impoverished thinking — that money and rich people are “evil”, that wealth is more a result of swerte (“luck”) than of hard work and clever ideas, that complex ideas articulated in English cause “nosebleed”, and, of course, the old Catholic notion that the poor are “blessed”. There is nothing “blessed” about being poor. Being poor sucks. As Mae West was said to have said: “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, and rich is better.” To be fair, Filipinos who, as a people, have never been rich probably wouldn’t get it. Yet.

          Posudiš mi lozinku
Hakeraj! No to su izuzeci. Čak i ako vam ju je on sam dodijelio.

In the spirit of iconic Silicon Valley renegades like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, a new generation of entrepreneurs is sparking yet another cultural upheaval through technology. They are among the Upstarts, idiosyncratic founders with limitless drive and an abundance of self-confidence. Young, hungry and brilliant, they are rewriting the traditional rules of business, changing our day-to-day lives and often sidestepping serious ethical and legal obstacles in the process. The Upstarts is the definitive account of a dawning age of tenacity, creativity, conflict and wealth. In Brad Stone’s highly anticipated and riveting account of the most radical companies of the new Silicon Valley, we find out how it all started, and how the world is wildly different than it was ten years ago.           WOA, Dude

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/andrewbrust/archive/2012/02/10/woa-dude.aspx

This was a big week for Windows 8 news (given the relative secrecy around the whole project).  At the beginning of the week we learned that the Consumer Preview (fka the "Beta") of Windows 8 will be released at the very end of the month in concert with the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona (MWC).  Then, just yesterday, Windows and Windows Live Division President Steven Sinofsky uploaded an 8600+ word post to the Building Windows 8 blog detailing Microsoft's plans for Windows on ARM (i.e. Windows for devices using the same low-power processor designs used in virtually all smartphone and tablet devices today).  It's probably worthwhile to deconstruct these two developments a little, as I think they are two sides of the same coin.

The first thing to note is that Microsoft launched the Beta of Windows 7 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, 2009.  But for Windows 8 in 2012, Redmond decided to wait until February and do it at the MWC instead.  Part of the reasoning behind this may have been that the Beta wasn't ready in early January, but I think another part, or maybe all, of the reasoning is based on Microsoft's understanding that PCs are going mobile.  Perhaps Microsoft doesn't view where we are as the "post-PC" era, but that really comes down to semantics, as the tablet-style devices that Microsoft continues to call PCs seem to be the "hero devices" for the new version of the Windows operating system.  Hence the showcase at MWC for Windows 8 and this week's white-paper-as-blog-post on Windows on ARM (WOA).

The WOA news was pretty big, so let's just cut to the chase: WOA will feature a Windows desktop mode, but the only things you'll be able to run there are applets that are part of Windows itself, Internet Explorer 10 (which, arguably, is one of those applets anyway) and the forthcoming version of Office, codenamed "Office 15."  There won't be other apps there, and browser plug-ins, as Sinofsky revealed in his interview with All Things D's Ina Fried, will not offer a workaround...because even the desktop version of IE 10 in WOA won't support them.  That means no Flash on WOA and no Silverlight on WOA either, at all.

Is this nuts?  Honestly, I don't think so.  If you read Sinofsky's post, you'll see there was some pretty methodical thinking behind this, and most of it has to do with power efficiency and reliability of the WOA experience.  Windows Desktop applications are built with an assumption of always-on AC power, or the laptop-style DC power that emulates it.  Desktops and laptops aren't like phones.  They're not devices; they're machines.  People use them as machines, people expect them to work like machines, and developers build machine-oriented apps for them.  That's not a bad thing...in fact, it's required.

But tablets are devices.  Interactions with them are fast and discrete, like a stand-up meeting rather than an all-morning whiteboard session.  Get in, get out, and go forth.  That's why WOA will be installed on the device when you buy it.  That's why all updates will come from the Windows Update system, and why all apps will come from the Windows Store.  That makes sense.  WOA products are different products, and will face different expectations.  In 2002, Bill Gates wrote one of his watershed all-personnel memos, titled Trustworthy Computing.  While much of the memo was focused on security, Gates had this to say toward the conclusion of the memo: "Systems will have to become self-managing and inherently resilient. We need to prepare now for the kind of software that will make this happen, and we must be the kind of company that people can rely on to deliver it."  Ten years later, Windows 8, and especially Windows on ARM, seem poised to fulfill this goal.

So why call WOA devices PCs?  While part of this is due to the politics and semantics I alluded to above, I think another part of it has to do with productivity.  Microsoft sees PCs, in addition to being leisure devices, as things (machines or devices) with which people get work done.  And that's why, I believe, Microsoft is allowing one non-OS application suite to run in the Desktop mode: Office.  Take a look at this video with Scott Seiber, featured in Sinofsky's post - particularly at the 3:46 time marker - and you'll see what I mean.  I haven't used Office 15, so I don't know how productive it really is with touch, but it looks good.  I have used iWork on the iPad, and I know that, for me at least, it's not productive at all.

So here's where we are with Windows 8:  The Intel platform will offer a full Desktop mouse-and-keyboard experience and will feature a split personality, allowing Metro-style apps to run as well, sometimes with touch.   Windows on ARM devices will offer the Metro-style touch-first experience first-and foremost, and still provide the productivity of Office without forcing users to switch to a machine, like the iPad does today.  Intel PCs for Windows 8 will be machines with device capabilities.  Windows on ARM "PCs" will be devices with "in-a-pinch" Windows desktop capabilities, including the platform's crucial desktop productivity apps, optimized for touch and power conservation.

I don't know if Microsoft can beat Apple with this approach, but it looks like the only logical way forward.  A logical approach plus a lot of perseverance can be a winning strategy.  It has been with a great number of Microsoft's other products.

          AppleSoft Basics

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/andrewbrust/archive/2011/08/25/applesoft-basics.aspx

There are plenty of posts and articles out there that provide retrospectives of, and pay homage to, Steve Jobs’ tenure as Apple CEO.  I’m not an expert on Apple or Jobs, and this is not one of those posts.

But Steve Jobs’ resignation from the CEO post does mark the end of a related era I know something about.  It’s the era that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs defined together.  And now that both of them have ended their CEO runs and receded to roles as Chairmen of the Board, it’s important to consider just how much these two men did together to pioneer the industry we now all work in and define ourselves by.

Yes, I identify the era with both men, despite many seeing them as perennial adversaries who led companies that approach computing very differently. The fact is that the two men, and the two companies, have a long and storied shared heritage.  It dates back to 1977 when 8-bit computing became hot and when Microsoft BASIC ran on each leading machine of that time.  I started working with computers a year later, at the age 12.  I didn’t own an Apple II, but I used one at school, and remember distinctly the presence of Microsoft BASIC on that machine, albeit branded “AppleSoft BASIC.”  It’s a fitting name, and drives home an underpinning to this industry that many don’t realize or have chosen to forget.

I could pontificate some more on that, but it’s more effective for people to hear it in context.  With that in mind, I recommend to all as required viewing a 2007 interview of Jobs and Gates by Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at that year’s All Things D conference.  Here’s a link to the video:
http://t.co/c0aclsd
It doesn't want to play full-screen, but your browser's zoom function should mitigate this problem.

Watch the full length interview video if you can; it’s really quite stunning.  It shows how much more these two companies have in common than they do anything in conflict, and how much the two men share in career history and mutual respect.  There are also humbling ironies here, including numerous references to how much bigger MS is than Apple, and Jobs talking about how Apple gets excited if its market share increases by 1 point.  (Another irony is that it's a Flash video and won't play on an iPad.)

Best of all though, if you advance to the 37:00 mark, you will hear Bill Gates speak (with Jobs politely listening) of a future where people will have multiple devices, including a tablet (which they will use extensively), a phone ("the device that fits in your pocket") as well a more conventional machine with a screen and keyboard.  Then Jobs adds commentary on how resilient the PC is and how its death has been exaggerated.

Jobs continues by discussing post-PC devices, illuminating a difference in the two men’s outlooks that is not insignificant.  But by and large, it's as if they are of one philosophy.  In highlighting that broad unity, the interview kicks the whole polarized industry paradigm and leaves it on its ass.  I look at that as just one more valuable contribution to our field.

Full Service Agent For Discount Price? Demand Specifics!
There is no such thing as a free lunch, but lots of people will pretend there is. It seems to me that many people consider compensation earned by real estate agents as paying some kind of toll. They think of it as admission to the world of MLS, to showings and writing offers. Kind of like a tollbooth on a road somewhere. If there's another place just down the road that offers the same access cheaper, it makes sense to pay your access fee there. If you think of what an agent or loan officer makes as a toll, just a cost of getting into the arena, it makes sense to go cheap. If you realize it is a payment for knowledge, expertise, service, someone who not only helps you CYA and prevents major mistakes, but makes a positive difference to the result, a different dynamic emerges. There are existing offices modeled after every level of service from basically nothing on up. It costs them nothing to say "Full service for a discount price," but that doesn't make it true. Like a certain ex-president who "did not have sex with that woman!" you have to consider what definition they're using in making that claim. If sitting in their office with MLS access and a fax machine is "full service" for them, by their lights they are providing "full service for a discount price." Amazing how slippery the concept of "full service" is, which is why you should ask for specifics on what services are and are not included. Remember how in my loan article Questions You Should Ask Prospective Loan Providers, I listed a whole bunch of questions the intent of which was to nail down how much of the truth they were telling you, you want to ask prospective agents what services their fees cover. Among other things, this exposes the "full service for a discount price" claim to be yet another Great Lie on the level of "I gave at the office," "The check is in the mail," or "Yes, I'll respect you in the morning." The bottom-most level is essentially a fax machine and MLS access. I've met some where the fax machine was purely a service that converted email to and from from fax. I've even met some where I suspect they didn't have MLS access and were working off one of the free public real estate sites. They never leave the office; all they are about is access. This level might be good for you if you know as much as a good agent, like say, you were a good agent but lost your renewal application in the mail. Otherwise, you're setting yourself up for an experience like my first purchase. Above that is the level of service that actually help you with paperwork. They still never leave the office, but at least they've got access to WinForms and some kind of checklist for paperwork. They're still not helping you with your investigations or marketing, but at least you might get some kind of more or less complete list of the disclosures you're required to make as a seller, while as a buyer you're going to be quite firmly told to get an inspection. Not that they're going to be there for the inspection, or help you interpret it, or help you figure out if maybe you need something more. They may or may not be aware of a large percentage of traps for the unwary that lie in these documents and the inspection, but at least they help you with the most basic level of CYA. Assistance in negotiation may or may not become an option at this level. Since the ones at this level never go out and look at property, they can't have any real clue as to its virtues and faults, especially as compared to whatever else has sold in the area in the last few months, but at least they have may have enough of a clue as to general market conditions to keep you from making or accepting the wrong kind of offer. This is the level of the CMA, or comparative market analysis, which takes somewhere between 5 and 20 minutes and about the intelligence of Mongo from Blazing Saddles. At least you shouldn't make an offer or accept an offer that is completely and totally off base for your type of property in your area. The higher up the ladder of service you go and the more involved with the specifics of your market and your property the agent is, the more valuable this service becomes. Top agents that know enough about the property and the "comparables" can potentially negotiate the other side ten to fifteen percent (or more, in a market that favors you) from the numbers that someone using a lesser agent might be stuck with. I know because I've seen it happen - I've made it happen or not happen, and in one case, seen the next buyer pay more than fifty thousand dollars more than the contracted price I negotiated for one buyer who suffered an attack of insanity at closing. At the next level above paperwork, you've got the agent who may go out and visit the property. For a listing, they're going to measure your property, take some notes for the listing, and maybe give some advice as to how to stage it or put you in touch with a stager who pays them a referral fee. For a buyer, they're more or less willing to open the front door on properties you've told them you want to view. Both sorts will make the effort to sell the property, the listing party more than the door opener. The listing agent's client is only happy when the property sells while most buyers bristle at more than a certain level of sales talk. In both cases, however, they're trying to get that buyer to sign up with them, preferably (from their point of view) with an Exclusive Buyer's Agency Agreement, so the pressure won't be real high in either case. This is also the level at which open houses become something that agents really want to do, in order to snare buyers' business. It is to be noted that there are a lot of agents who think they really are providing as much service as any other agent with this level of service. They aren't. They're still clueless or nearly clueless as to how it compares with everything else on the market in the area, or that was on the market, because they haven't gone and visited any on their own. Somewhere along about this level of service and above, the agents may actually be willing to get out of the office to meet the inspectors and appraiser. After all, they've now got a negotiated agreement and it's in their interest to further the transaction so that they can get paid. They may also help you interpret what all of these reports say. Not necessarily; but at least it starts being a possibility, rather than pushing all of this off onto the clients or the other agent. This is where a lot of lawsuits start, so many brokerages actually prohibit their agents from being present at inspections - at most they can open the door and leave. I'm not a lawyer, but if I'm presenting myself as being an expert at real estate, not being present for the inspection seems to be evidence of gross negligence, just on the face of it. On the other hand, if the clients are representing themselves as being competent in this area in order to receive discounted service, that's fine with me. I actually make more per hour of my time with less legal liability. Above this level of service, the services provided by good listing agents and good buyer's agents diverge dramatically. So much so that they cannot even be meaningfully discussed at the same time. Since a listing agent is essentially a marketer while a buyer's agent is charged with analysis and comparison among alternatives, this shouldn't surprise anyone. They are different functions at the heart, and many agents who are very good at one are considerably less proficient at the other. Fact. I can point to great listing agents who are putrid on the buyer's side, and vice versa. Often, it's as simple as attitude. Some listing agents can't stop thinking like listing agents, while some buyer's agents can't stop thinking like buyer's agents, and they are completely different thought processes. It took me a while to learn this, and I can point to a lot of agents whom the evidence indicates have not yet done so. For the listing agent, the question largely resolves to pricing, plus what degree of staging and precisely how much marketing they are going to do. Note that even the most exhaustive marketing campaign is not likely to get more than the property is worth, but it can mean you get top dollar instead of significantly less, particularly if you price it correctly and have the property ready for the market when it hits the market. Pricing too high to begin with "to see if you can get it," is the mark of an inferior agent "buying" the listing, as you won't be likely to get the higher price and it will almost certainly reduce the final sales price by more than any lucky windfall might be. Particularly in the buyer's market most of the country has right now. These are all obvious things of value - when that agent spends time and money marketing your property, they're spending their own resources, not yours. How to word an advertisement, when to run it, where to run it - all of these are expertise. Go check out how much marketers with far lower sales who don't use their own resources and who draw a salary get paid make in the corporate world before you make a snap judgment as to whether it is or is not worth the money. Here's one example, and keep in mind that this is only a part of what a good listing agent does. On the buyer's agent side, the question is more singular: How much property scouting are they going to do? Are they going to wait until the client asks to check out a property or are they going to go check out every possibility in the market? Are they going to go out on their own to eliminate definite turkeys before telling you about the cream? Still more important is are they going to tell you about good and bad, reasons why it's good and why it may be deficient, on every property, but that's something you can only observe in action. This is the paramount and unanswerable reason why you shouldn't sign any exclusive buyer's representation agreements unless you are so certain of this agent that your spouse can tear your arm off and beat you to death with it if you're wrong. They need to cover what the property has and what it doesn't, and what it's going to take to bring it up to an acceptable level where it is deficient. Structural flaws, basic amenities, floor plan, lot layout, etcetera, not to mention location location location. Not just now, but for any future sale that you might later decide to make. This whole thing is so time intensive it can't profitably be done on any basis other than the complete combo package of buyer's agent services, and it requires a level of expertise and market knowledge that cannot be acquired on the fly, and aren't cost effective to learn for one transaction. You'd make maybe thirty cents per hour. I might believe fifty or even seventy-five cents per hour in a high cost area like mine. However, if you have an agent with this knowledge and the right attitude, there's nothing else that will make nearly so much difference, both in terms of price and in terms of final satisfaction with your purchase. If you don't want "the full package", that's fine with me and every other agent I know of who's capable of the full package. As I said, we make more per hour with the lesser packages even if we get paid less. But we can also work with a lot more buyers wanting less intensive service, or a lot more sellers, and make more money overall. Furthermore, it's a lot easier for someone who makes a regular habit of doing "the full package" to perform lesser services than it is for someone who doesn't to perform greater. That market knowledge we get from the other clients we have? It doesn't magically disappear because this client isn't paying me to run around scouting properties. Usually I'm working with multiple clients in my area and while one wants the whole nine yards, another doesn't. Just because I'm not scouting for you doesn't mean I'm forgetting about all the stuff I scouted for someone else. But someone who doesn't make a habit of it is working from the same zero base I'd be working from outside San Diego County. Somebody once asked me about Hourly pay instead of commission for agents. Just as you'd expect, agents can charge less if the client is going to pay an hourly rate for their time regardless of whether there is a transaction. That's called transaction risk, and is a real risk of this business - the chance that, if you're paid on commission, you can spend dozens to hundreds of hours with someone, as well as lots of money, and not make a thing. If the client chooses to bear the transaction risk, that's fine with me, and they'll at least have the opportunity to pay me less for a successful transaction - although they'll still pay the cash if there's not. As I just wrote, that's the risk they are choosing or not choosing to take. The cash alternative is potentially a lot less expensive, but I haven't met a whole lot of people who like the idea of writing me a check for actual dollars they earned and saved without any certainty of a happy outcome for them. When you get right down to it, most clients do not want to assume transaction risk. But neither agents nor clients can have it both ways. Some agents have huge lists of what they do, specifying point by point all the services they provide, splitting the services up into the largest number describable to make it seem like more. Others lump them together by more general categories, and may do anything that belongs within the due diligence and responsibilities they agreed to, where the "splitter" figures since it wasn't covered, they aren't doing it. Nonetheless, either way is basically valid. A written representation that they perform specifically named services obligates them to do so, but there is rarely a significant difference between someone who does that and someone who lumps them into more generic categories. I suppose it's all a matter of whether you want someone with a detailed checklist and someone who goes around looking for something they might have missed even though it may not to be on a checklist - but it applies to your transaction. There are also agents who want a full package price for discount service. Mostly they are working under a well-known chain nameplate and have an extensive advertising campaign telling the suckers how great they are. This procedure, especially when compared with what other agents are offering, will also help you find out about the money you'd waste with them before you sign their agreement. You may have noticed that I haven't attached any specific numbers to any of this. That's because it's both variable by market and negotiable within a market. The more services you want, the more money the agent will want to make. Ditto with resources, both time and money, you ask them to invest. If you're determined to get the best bargain you can, you need to shop agents and compare their competence and their attitude as well as their price. If you want to negotiate pay with a professional negotiator, well I've got admiration for your chutzpah. Plus I have to admit that it's a fair test of those abilities. Even if those negotiations turn out bad for you, imagine where OJ Simpson would be today if he had a cheap lawyer. Or Britney Spears. Or Bill Gates, the massiveness of whose fortune lies in one legal victory over IBM, as well as his lawyers outlasting the government anti-trust lawyers at a later date. My service bundle is 100% negotiable, and not being a slave to NAR or the brokerage oligarchy that controls it, I'll fight any effort to change this. My understanding is that any such attempt to force us to conform is doomed under California law (at least), but I am not a lawyer and I'll defer to other expertise there if it wants to chime in. But I do think it reasonable that agents and brokerages be forced to specify what services they do and do not offer, and what they are and are not responsible for in a given transaction, at least by category. Good full service agents do this now. The next dedicated discounter I see who does this will be the first. The very services which are most time consuming and lead to the largest liability are the very ones that dedicated discounters will not fulfill and will do their darnedest to pretend don't exist. But they're also the ones that make the most difference for most clients, and would rank as most important for those clients if they were asked to rank them. Caveat Emptor Original article here

The Bush bureaucracy: Definitely NOT "Government at the Speed of Thought"!
After reading Bill Gates' book on inovation and openness in business, comparing his ideas to the way George Bush runs our government just makes me want to cry. America needs to be run smoothly and efficiently, not just be somebody's toy. Instead of correcting errors as they happen, Bush's failures such as Iraq, FEMA and 9-11 go on and on. With a secretive inflexible dufus as its CEO, America is being run into the ground.
6 reasons the Xbox One will probably stink

Microsoft's biggest failure? Ignoring its dedicated gamer fanbase.

Last week we saw what was possibly the least revealing reveal in technological history. Microsoft rolled out the Xbox One, loaded with all types of futuristic ideas, most of which have nothing to do with gaming. The presentation lasted about an hour, and did a great job explaining why the One isn’t a video game console. Let’s recap the highlights!

1. Xbox One hates your freedom

Step one: Buy a game. Step two: Install it onto the hard drive. Congratulations! That game that you just shelled out top dollar for can only be played while logged into your account through a consistent Internet connection. Sure, you can log in from a friend’s console and play, but your friend can’t join in without paying a fee, and that fee could be equal to the purchase price of the new game. In Microsoft’s defense, they’ve been incredibly vague about the whole arrangement. This has far-reaching implications that could forever change the way gamers do what they do. What’s the benefit of buying a used game if you’re still going to have to pay Microsoft a “fee” to play it on your own console? You won’t be able to lend, trade or rent games with friends either, without each new person paying to play. Microsoft says they have a plan for this, but we’ll have to wait and see since they haven’t told anyone what it is.

2. Without Internet, it becomes a multi-hundred dollar paperweight

The Xbox One will likely require an internet connection every 24 hours. At least you don’t need a constant Internet connection, a requirement that infamously ruined SimCity and Diablo 3 for many PC gamers. Still, it does seem that, by requiring any kind of consistent Internet connection, most of those same issues will come up. If your console can’t connect, you can’t even play single-player games until that connection is back. Cool, huh?

Let’s face it, things happen. Servers go down. Internet goes out. Sometimes someone might even have the desire to play a game somewhere without Internet access. Guess they'll have to pull out their old 360s for that though.

3. You can’t take out a restraining order against Kinect

Games XboxView full sizeA group of visiting journalists try out the improved motion-detecting capabilities of the new Kinect controller for Microsoft's next-generation Xbox One entertainment and gaming console system, Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in Redmond, Wash. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)
The good news is that every Xbox One will come with Kinect! The bad news is the Kinect will always be on, watching and listening to everything you do. Everything. There will be a way to turn the Kinect off, but the microphone would have to stay active in order to recognize voice commands.

And Microsoft isn’t just giving everyone a free Kinect. The cost is built into the system, so you’re paying for it whether you want it or not, and you’ll use it whether you want to or not, because Xbox One won't work right without it. On the bright side, with the audio/visual information Kinect picks up, the Xbox One could potentially do such things as order you a pizza when it notices that you’re rounding out your 5th consecutive hour of Burn Notice re-runs, and even request an ambulance from your local 911 dispatch when it notices that your heart-rate has flat-lined after choking on your 6th slice. Except, Kinect uses its powers not for good, but for, well, nothing that seems to actually improve your gaming experience.

4. It’s a Jack of all trades, master of none

Microsoft is putting all their Xbox eggs in the “one device to rule them all” basket. For example, now you can watch live TV on the Xbox One! Well, you do still have to have a regular cable provider and cable box, and it’s possible that you may have to buy another peripheral from Microsoft that isn’t included with the One, and you may even have to pay for yet another subscription service to use this feature. But you no longer have to bother with such nonsense as finding your TV remote, or pressing its input button! Actually, the One can’t turn your TV on, so you’ll still need the remote for that, but you can finally forget about that input button!

5. Bill Gates doesn’t care about all the money you spent on Xbox 360 games

Xbox One Behind the ScenesView full sizeDon Mattrick, President of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft (AP Images)
Don Mattrick, the President of Microsoft’s Xbox division referred to the idea of backwards compatibility as “backwards thinking.” Really? You could at least tell us some garbage about how cutting backwards compatibility cuts so many dollars off of the production of each blah, blah, blah, and we’re passing the savings on to you! Or whatever.

They already insist on offering us the only console that hides all the good stuff, like online multiplayer and Netflix, behind Xbox Live Gold premiums. Now, they’re adding insult to injury: We can’t even play the XBLA games we downloaded. If Gamerscores and Achievements will carry over, why can’t our XBLA games come along too? To sweeten that deal, Xbox One will also shun all your 360 controllers, headsets and any other peripherals you bought because it's more fun to make you buy new ones.

6. Bill Gates doesn’t even care about all the money you’re about to spend on Xbox One games

The Xbox One has a so-called “non-user serviceable” hard drive that isn’t replaceable. Think about all the Red Rings of Death suffered by 360 users around the world. What if your Kinect breaks down while it’s trying to teach you how to kickbox Adam Levine or something even more awesome? Surprise! Since your shiny new Xbox won’t be able to function without Kinect, you’ll probably have to replace the whole thing. One little problem, and all those brand new games you were forced to install onto your hard drive could forever be stuck on a dead console, leaving you to pay the license fees all over again for any games you want to keep playing. There might be a way for you to salvage those games through your Xbox Live account, but Microsoft has been so vague about how it all works that we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed on that one.

---

It all wraps up in Microsoft’s biggest failure: Ignoring their dedicated gamer fanbase. Microsoft seemed so gung-ho to talk about watching TV on the new console that they really didn’t offer any information about how the games and hardware work. To make matters worse, they didn’t seem to realize all the controversy this would cause, and they aren’t addressing concerns quickly enough to squelch all the rumors. The One still has a lot of potential, but it’ll take a lot of back-pedaling to make it right in the eyes of gamers.

Does Zuck Want To Be The Next Gates with Personalized Learning
Here's lead from the EdWeek article:

Pediatrician Priscilla Chan and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg are gearing up to invest hundreds of millions of dollars a year in a new vision of “whole-child personalized learning,” with the aim of dramatically expanding the scope and scale of efforts to provide every student with a customized education.

The power couple's Big Initiative has announced its intent to "support the development of software that might help teachers better recognize and respond to each student’s academic needs—while also supporting a holistic approach to nurturing children’s social, emotional, and physical development." So, slap the child in front of a screen, but somehow have the child turn out physically and emotionally well-rounded.

To head this up, they've hired former Deputy Sec of Ed James Shelton. Shelton knows the territory-- besides overseeing the Office of Innovation and Improvement (before John King took the job), he was an Ed Guy for the Gates Foundation, worked with New School Venture Fund, spent time with McKinsey, and worked for 2U, an organization that helped for-profit colleges take advantages of the loopholes that he wrote into laws governing such schools back when he was at USED. In other words, he has carved out a long and useful career at the intersection of Big Investor Dollars and education "innovation."

The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative presents new opportunities because A) it has more money than God and B) it's not really a philanthropy so much as a philanthropy-flavored investment business.

CZI will be able to make philanthropic donations, invest in for-profit companies, lobby for favored policies and legislation, and directly support candidates for elected office—all with minimal public-reporting requirements.

CZI often runs with the word "start-up," and Shelton's plans sound very businessy.

Within five years, Shelton said in the June 22 interview, CZI’s work should have helped launch a “meaningful number” of schools and learning environments “where kids are performing dramatically better, and feel more engaged, and teachers feel more engaged in the work that they’re doing.”

The important part of that quote comes in the first half. They are looking to start some education-flavored businesses. The article includes some pointed words of caution from Rick Hess, who is rapidly becoming a prolific sub-tweeter of Betsy DeVos:

“This isn’t engineering a new ride-sharing app,” he said. “It’s how do we influence the learning of millions of children, day after day, for years to come.”

(IOW, Mrs. DeVos, charter schools are not UBER) The article does, however, give an accurate and pointed summary of the recent history of personalized learning:

Over the past several years, other philanthropists, venture capitalists, and advocates, along with the ed-tech industry, have pushed the notion hard. Many district and school leaders have responded favorably.

In other words, the PL "revolution" is about investors and corporations-- not about teachers or educators or schools. It is the new technocratic horizon, with Zuckerberg poised to become for Personalized Learning (at least this particular version of it) what Bill Gates was for the Common Core-- its patron saint, its bank, its armtwister, and all without any real input from people who work in education. Hoo-frickin-ray.

The article's author, Benjamin Herold, notes that it's hard to talk about personalized learning because the meaning is so fuzzy (and that includes when Zuckerberg is talking about it, as he has on many occasions). Part of the question is scale-- at one point Zuckerberg announced his intention to get PL to everyone-- but Shelton told EW that he wanted to focus on large improvements for small groups of students. Well.

"Large improvements for small groups of students" would make an excellent motto for the charter school industry (though they often fail to live up to it). It's not all that helpful for a public education system aimed at all students. And Shelton's exemplar shows that his aim is not true:

As an example, he cited a recent grant to the College Board, aimed at expanding access to the organization’s personalized online SAT preparation and college-planning resources, which have shown early promise.

No. What College Board has sort-of-proven is that when you give students a lot of test prep aimed at one particular test, they get better scores on that test. This is not innovation, and it's not education, either.

Herold notes that some skeptics are calling for open-sourcing. As Bill Fitzgerald notes in the article, "If you’re serious about allowing people to learn in the ways that make the most sense to them, you have to give them more choices than just using your software, under your rules.” On the other hand, if you're serious about getting good ROI on your fledgling education-flavored business, then you make sure all of your proprietary materials stay under wraps so that all customers must deal with you.

And let's remember again how Zuckerberg is specially equipped in ways that Bill Gates was not. In fact, the article notes that the special structure allows CZI to out-Gates Gates. "Levers" they can "pull." For instance, actual philanthropies have their hands tied when it comes to lobbying; CZI has no such limitations. And CZI doesn't "rule out" other sorts of political activities to push its initiatives. Yeah, I know-- the rules didn't slow Gates down a bit. But it's one more level CZI has to yank upon. And while Gates is required to employ some transparency (hence all the research folks have done tracking Gates Foundation grants), CZI will have no such requirement. They can operate in darkness as much as they like.

And CZI has clearly signaled its intent to try to shape policy debates in education and to exert different kinds of influence in complementary ways. An online job description for the position of “director of innovative schools and tools,” for example, called for someone who can “ensure our nonprofits and for-profit investments are coordinated for maximum impact.”

That not only underlines the nature of how CZI will try to impose its will, but what will they want to impose. This is a business, just barely disguised as philanthropic work, and personalized learning is emerging as the next big technocratic frontier in getting public education money tucked into private corporate pockets. And the possibility for conflicts of interest that are huge but invisible to the public-- like basically paying people to use and promote your product while keeping your sponsorship secret-- that's a big concern as well. How does Shelton plan to avoid such problems?

 We’re paying really close attention

Phew! That's a relief.

As is its wont, EW circles back around to a feels-okay finale:

Ultimately, Shelton said, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative feels as though it’s responsible primarily to the people the organization is hoping to serve.

That's probably true. The bigger question is-- who are those people, really. Of course, according to Shelton, it's all For The Children. Call me cynical, but it appears that other large interests are in play as well.

Newcastle under Lyme Stairlifts Company Get The Cup!
Castle Comfort Stairlifts MD with Tracey Aherne of the Newcastle Bridge Club,
receiving the silver- plated Castle Comfort Trophy.

Bridging The Gap
Our latest local sponsorship award goes to Newcastle Bridge Club

With many members of local Bridge Clubs being customers of ours and reaching the ages when wanting a nice new recliner chair for their golden years is the norm, it made sense that we would like to be involved in the launch of an annual bridge competition at Newcastle Bridge Club.  The winning pair will get their names engraved on "The Castle Comfort Cup" and also will win a cash prize, though it's not compulsory to spend it with us on any of our helpful products!
Scroll on down the page for more information all about Bridge as well as the club itself.

The Newcastle Bridge Club began nearly 65 years ago when a group from Basford Bridge Club set up their own matches in members homes and by hiring local meeting rooms.  By the 1970's they were renting a second floor room on the High Street in Newcastle, but their need for ground floor premises of their own was answered in the mid 1990's when the building on King Street became available and after a lot of hard work from volunteers and some considerable loans from members and the bank, they took possession of the premises.  The Club was officially opened by the Lady Mayor, Elsie Ashley, on Thursday 31st March 1994.

Of course, defining the word bridge goes well beyond the popular game about which we referring to with our sponsorship of Newcastle Bridge Club. Some years ago it entered the world of mobility products - to be exact stairlifts, when people with perhaps a limited a budget or simply cost conscious - needed a chairlift to go around a curve at the top of the stairs. A curved stairlift system until recent years ago could have cost between £4,000 and £7,000 - so certain manufacturers and specialist suppliers created a 'bridge platform' or often referred to as a 'bridging platform' This ingenious gadget constructed from a strong timber platform and small hydraulic hinges - enabled a straight lift to be fitted (a lot cheaper of course) and even with the extra £200 or so for the bridging platform - It was considerably less than the cost of a curved installation

Here it is, demonstrated by a 'supporter' of the Premier League team Stoke City, alias 'The Potters'

The disadvantage of a bridge platform however, is that apart from the fact it has to be lifted up and down manually by the user, they could fall of it and break their necks.
Hardly a mobility product acquisition linked to longevity!

Where the angle of the stairs and the width was considerable then the danger pointed out there is considerably less, but nevertheless, the industry has worked hard to avoid using a risky adaptation - and in recent years the cost of a good curved system, whether new or reconditioned has come down, and made them much more affordable.

Ironically, a stair-lift specialist near Stoke on Trent (whose directors are probably Stoke City fans - but not the one shown above) claim to be partially responsible for the dramatic reduction in the size of investment needed for less hazardous solutions to mounting a curved stair-well.

Castle Comfort Stairlifts, based precisely at Cross Heath and Wolstanton in Newcastle under Lyme claim, as agents for all UK manufacturers, to have enabled huge price drops due to the sheer volume of business generated by them.

Apart from handling their own direct contracts, the enquiries received are supplied to any one (OR MORE) of several manufacturers to compete for the work. These days, a price paid for a curved stairlift installation is more likely to be between £2,500 and £4,000 - still not tuppence halfpenny, but around half of what it was a few years ago. Few things we buy in life have followed such a price change pattern.

In essence, the public who contact Castle Comfort - find that they will probably receive a quotation (or more than one) to consider, that is a lot less than had they responded to a newspaper or a TV ad, thinking that was the only stairlift company to approach.

So apart from saving money, it is perhaps a better option than a broken neck! Call 01782 611411 or 01782 631111 for a free no obligation quotation for a curved (or straight) stairlift - or visit the Stairlift showhouse at Cross Heath for a ride on one!

BRIDGE THE GAME

Here below written by our esteemed columnist Mr John Pedder MBE we have more about Bridge the well loved game played especially by the most senior members of society.

"Every game has a character of its own appropriate to the company it keeps and the place where it is played."
David Partlett - Oxford Guide to Card Games

What do James Bond, Dwight Eisenhower, Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Martina Navratilova, Omar Sharif and Snoopy have in common? They all play Bridge. Yes, Snoopy is no stranger to the bridge table, thanks to cartoonist Charles Schulz.

Bill Gates is a self-confessed bridge addict, attributing his condition to the billionaire investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett. Buffett, a die-hard player, once said "If I'm playing bridge and a naked woman walks by, I don't even see her"

James Bond, chalked up 7 redoubled in Ian Fleming's novel "Moonraker". The hand used by Fleming was an historic one. It is known as 'The Duke of Cumberland Hand.' Duke of Cumberland Hand - A purportedly rigged hand dealt to the son of George III, the King of England, resulting in the loss of a £20,000 wager. The hand was used in the James Bond movie, "Moonraker" against the villain Drax.
While Bond's 8 points don't look too strong, he uses Drax's tendency to clubs to promote his own diamonds resulting in a thundering thirteen tricks.

How old is Bridge?

An early reference to Bridge, using the earlier name of trump or English ruff can be found in a perhaps unlikely place, namely a sermon published in 1529 by Bishop Hugh Latimer . The sermon, entitled "On the Cards" was given on the Sunday before Christmas 1529 in St Edmunds Church, Cambridge. "And where you are wont to celebrate Christmass in playing at Cards, I intend, by God's Grace, to deal unto you Christ's Cards, wherein you will perceive Christ's Rule. The game that we play shall be called the Triumph, where, if it be well played at he that dealeth shall win, the players shall win and likewise the standers and lookers upon shall do the same. You must mark also that the Triumph must apply to fetch unto him all the other Cards, whatever suit they be of. What requireth Christ of a Christian man? Now turn up your Trump, your Heart, (Heart is the Trump as I said before) and cast your Trump, your heart on this card."

Bishop Latimer lived in very turbulent and dangerous times, the England of the 16th century. Monarchs and prelates were all powerful and religion was at the heart of much of the power struggle. It is sad to reflect that very little has changed. Today we see that the abuse of religion and ruthless fanaticism remains at the heart of much of the world's troubles. Those who were safe and in favour could very soon see the tide of fortune rapidly change. On his death, King Henry VIII left three heirs, his son Edward and two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. On the death of Henry, Edward V1 ascended the throne in 1547. He was just nine years old. Henry was a Protestant or, in view of his young age, it may be more likely that his advisors were. During his reign the Latin services were translated into English and a desire to establish a more Bible based faith developed. Hugh Latimer, a Cambridge scholar and Bishop of Worcester, was favoured by Henry but failed to influence the King to allow the Protestant reforms. He had more success under Edward and, with two other men, Nicholas Ridley and Thomas Cranmer, the English reformation painfully took shape. On the death of Edward V1 at the age of fifteen, his cousin, Lady Jane Gray took his place but only for a mere nine days! Mary ascended the throne in 1553 and Mary was a Roman Catholic. She earned the name "Bloody Mary". Although fewer people were condemned compared with those at the behest of her father, Henry VIII, she had hundreds of people put to death, often by fire, solely because of their religious convictions. Mary had a firm objective and that was to return England to its 'true faith' , to Roman Catholicism under the Pope. Mary ordered that Latimer, Ridley and Cranmer be arrested. They had refused to recant on their Protestant beliefs and charged with heresy - punishable by death. Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley were burnt at the stake outside Balliol College in Oxford on 16th October 1555. The same fate befell Thomas Cranmer on March 21st 1556. The clerics became known as the Oxford Martyrs. For all of his skills at the card table, Ridley failed to win his final game against a powerful player, Queen Mary 1st.They are commemorated close to the place of the executions by the Martyrs Memorial outside Balliol College, a landmark well known to Chief Inspector Morse!

Bridge has been played for centuries, albeit under different names - triumph, trump, ruff, whisk swabbers and of course by the 17th century whist.
Whist may have been a reference to the speed at which cards were swept up after a winning trick or perhaps a call for silence during play. It was in 1742 that the first book on the game was published, 'Short Treatise on Whist' by Edward Hoyles. The first game of Duplicate Whist was played in London in 1834.

Cards in Literature

Shakespeare uses card games quite frequently in his texts. An interesting reference is taken here from 'Antony and Cleopatra' It is probably a reference to a game called Trump. This was probably the triumfo of the Italians, and the triomphe of the French — being perhaps of equal antiquity in England with primero. At the latter end of the sixteenth century it was very common among the inferior classes. There is, no doubt, a particular allusion to this game in "Antony and Cleopatra" (iv. 14), where Antony says: "the queen — Whose heart I thought I had, for she had mine; Which, whilst it was mine, had annex'd unto't A million more, now lost — she, Eros, has Pack'd cards with Caesar, and false-play'd my glory Unto an enemy's triumph." There is confusion between trump and triumph. The game in question bore a very strong resemblance to our modern whist — the only points of dissimilarity being that more or less than four persons might play at trump; that all the cards were not dealt out; and that the dealer had the privilege of discarding some, and taking others in from the stock. In Eliot's "Fruits for the French," 1593, it is called "a very common ale-house game in England." Players of modern day bridge may not be too pleased by such a description!

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)

Charles Dickens was arguably the first English novelist to write with a social conscience. The gap between rich and poor, the legal system, the exploitation of children and conditions in the workhouse and prostitution all came under his scrutiny. Dickens viewed card games as a symbol of class and social mobility as well as a potential evil.
In Victorian days, cards were associated with gambling and as such were often frowned upon. 'Great Expectations', thought by Dickens to be his finest work, appeared in weekly instalments in the periodical 'All the Year Round' between December 1860 and August 1861. Young Pip is summoned by Miss Haversham to Satis House and commanded to wait upon her once a week. On first meeting, the mad Miss Haversham, still attired in her now shabby wedding gown, commands the boy to "Play, play play!"
Pip is overwhelmed but agrees to play cards with the adopted daughter Estella, who remonstrates "Play with this boy! Why, he is a common labouring boy!" "What do you play, boy?" asked Estella of myself, with the greatest of disdain. "Nothing but Beggar-my-neighbour, miss."(Beggar-my-neighbour first appears in the Oxford Dictionary in 1734 but may have evolved from an earlier game Knave Out of Doors from as far back at the 16thcentury.) "Beggar him," said Miss Haversham to Estella. So we sat down to cards. Estella beats Pip at every game and uses her skill to dominate and belittle him. As Pip grows up and becomes a gentleman he makes acquaintances in the higher echelons of society. What he had assumed would bring him happiness and fulfilment failed to come up to his expectations. Only when he rejects games playing and other trappings of the gentility does he find contentment. Pip accepts the values of the Victorian middle classes, loyalty, honesty and hard work which trumped the games of trickery and chance played by other characters in the novel.

Agatha Christie (1890-1936)

Even the least amongst lovers of literature will almost certainly have heard of the crime writer Agatha Christie. One of her best known characters, featured in the TV series, is the fictional Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. Bridge is featured in the 1936 novel 'Cards on The Table.' There are four key players, Superintendent Battle, Colonel Race, Ariadne Oliver and Hercule Poirot. Whilst not usual police procedure, the Superintendent in charge of a murder investigation, agrees to work with three other 'sleuths', sharing all of the facts equally. "Cards on the table, that's the motto for this business" . The plot is that all of the potential murders played bridge together at the time of the murder. Poirot 's technique is to study how each of the suspects played bridge; their skill level, risk taking and their killer instinct. By using the way they played he could gain insight into their psychology and thus be led to the killer.

Bridge Players

Since the average person's small supply of politeness must last him all his life he cannot afford to waste it on bridge partners. (Alfred Sheinwold)

Bridge players are found all around the world and from all walks of life. From Monarchs and Presidents, film stars, academics, and politicians, to the ordinary man in the street, bridge has a compelling appeal. Each year teams from both The House of Commons and The House of Lords compete at the bridge table. Bridge is played at local club level and at national and inter-national level where both the determination to win is only matched by the high stakes.

The Cavendish Invitational
One of the largest, if not the largest event, certainly in terms money, is The Cavendish Invitational. The Cavendish Club, whose name is associated with the event was founded in New York back in 1925. Among the members were some of the greatest names in bridge. For whatever reasons, it moved around from Mayfair House, the Ambassador Hotel to the Ritz Tower Hotel and Carlton House. The club began hosting the Cavendish Invitational Pairs in 1975. The event continued for a number of years but in 1991, financial difficulties and a dwindling membership, forced the New York club to close its doors. However, the event continued in New York until 1997 when a major boost to its future occurred. World Bridge Productions took over the Invitational Pairs tournament and moved to the glitzy environment of Las Vegas. This was not only to raise the profile of the event but also the purse. More players were needed and WPB introduced another tournament, the Open Pairs. This is an auctioned event and is surrounded by drama and wealth. The day before the event, a black tie cocktail party is held where all the top pairs are acquired by the highest bidders. The pool can be in the region of $1million or more. The pairs purchase a minimum share of 10% in themselves and may go as high as 40% or more if agreed with the winner of the bid. So, what happens to the pool pot? At the end of the tournament, 95% is shared out proportionally. The rules are that each pair plays three boards against each of the other pairs, with a time limit of twenty five minutes per round with a total of forty five rounds being played to decide the winner. In 2012, the tournament moved location to Monaco.
Monaco 2014 gave some unexpected results as the choices made by the auctions turned out to not always be the correct ones. Number 1 rated Helgemo Helness had to be satisfied with second place in Final B which was won by the Russian pair, Gromov/Dubinin. Last year's winners, Nanev/Gunev, didn't qualify for Final A and only managed to claim eighth place in Final B. The final winners of 2014 Open Pairs, with a commanding superiority were Polish pair Krystof Buras and Gregorz Narkiewicz.

Buffett Cup
Another prestigious bridge tournament is the Buffett Cup, named of course after Warren Buffett (the inspiration behind Bill Gates' addiction to bridge) first staged in 2006. The event is modelled on the Ryder Cup golf competition with teams competing from the USA and Europe. This biennial event is held the week preceding the Ryder Cup. Teams are selected by invitation and must include at least two female players. The tournament allows for a mixture of teams of four, pairs and individual sessions. The 2014 Buffett Cup was scheduled to be held in Monaco but in the event it never happened. It was Europe's turn to offer a location and Monaco graciously offered to be the host and provide funding, with the exception of airfare. The problem was that the American Bridge Federation agreed to fund the tickets but then withdrew the offer. It seems that agreement could not be reached when deciding on the US team and months of bitter infighting followed, resulting in cancellation.

Bridge over troubled water
I now return to Agatha Christie's 'Cards on The Table' and the theme of murder. Surely, there is no connection between murder and bridge? Well, in fact there is more than one recorded murder where bridge was a factor.

"Regardless of what sadistic impulses were may harbour, winning bridge means helping a partner avoid mistakes." (Frank Stewart)

The Bridge Murder Case September 1929

What activities should a married couple never undertake together? No doubt there are many. I would certainly list learning to drive and hanging wallpaper! It would seem that playing bridge should be added to the list. It has led to murder - literally.

It all started as a perfectly normal social occasion between neighbours on the evening of September 29th 1927 in Kansas City. John and Myrtle Bennett were hosts to their friends Charles and Myrna Hofman who lived in the same affluent apartment block. Earlier in the day, the two men had played golf. John Bennett was said to be of a volatile disposition and was prone to slapping his wife when things failed to go his way - not an ideal qualification for bridge partners! The Hofmans were not skilled players and the Bennetts were soon in a commanding lead.
As the evening progressed the Hofmans managed to catch up and then took the lead. The tables had been turned by the time the fatal hand was played. In the debacle that followed, the cards were scattered and the exact nature of the hand is largely a guess. What was remembered by the survivors was the bidding.
John Bennett opened one spade, Charles Hofman overcalled two diamonds and Myrtle Bennett ended the auction with a jump to game in spades. After Mr Hofman made the opening lead Mrs Bennett spread as dummy a collection of cards Myrna Hofman was later to describe as "a rather good hand". Myrtle clearly believed the dummy she had laid out added to the values of her husband's first bid and should easily have resulted in game but Mr Bennett managed to fail in his contract by two tricks. It was then discovered that he had opened on less than full values.
It was alleged that after Mr Bennett played the hand to its inevitable less than glorious conclusion, his wife added to the already volatile atmosphere by calling him "a bum bridge player."
What followed is taken from Myra Hofman's testimony. The Hofman's tried to restore calm but could not do so. Bennett slapped his wife several times and said that he was going to spend the night in a hotel and then leave town.
What followed bears an uncanny likeness to the events described in the recent trial of Oscar Pistorius! John Bennett went to the bedroom and started to pack a suitcase and Myrtle went to her mother's room where she knew there was a loaded gun. Seeing the gun, John Bennett ran into the bathroom and bolted the door. Myrtle fired twice through the locked door. Unlike the Pistorius case, both shots missed.
A frantic John Bennett escaped from the bathroom by another door which led into a hallway, ran through the lounge and made an unsuccessful attempt to open the front door. Myrtle was quickly upon him and fired another two shots, this time with fatal results. Myrtle Bennett was charged with first degree murder. In the trial that followed Myrtle pleaded not guilty and claimed that she brought the gun to give to her husband as he routinely carried one when going away on business trips. The gun went off by accident as she tripped up in hall. Incredibly the jury chose to ignore the two bullet holes in the bathroom door and the fact that there was no suitcase in the hall. Mrs Bennett was acquitted. (Source:Wikipedia.org)

So, the Bennett case was a long time ago and surely such a case couldn't happen again. Well, it did as recently as July 2010. The shocking case was reported by 'BBC News Lancashire.'

Bridge player Stephen Green guilty of wife's murder

A former world championship bridge player has been jailed for life for murdering his wife in a knife attack. Stephen Green, 52, stabbed Carole Green, 57, 100 times at their flat in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. A jury at Preston Crown Court took 75 minutes to convict the former British Aerospace worker after a week-long trial. The murder followed his constant criticism of her card-playing. He was ordered to serve a minimum of 23 years after being found guilty of her murder. The court was told of the couple's stormy relationship, Green's heavy drinking and constant bickering about Mrs Green's playing abilities at Lytham Bridge Club, where they first met. The court heard testimonies from fellow bridge players who said that Green considered his wife to be a mere "club player" and viciously put her down in front of friends. It beggars belief that a card game could be taken so seriously as to result in an extraordinary motive for a frenzied attack by a player of world championship status.

What is the future for Bridge Clubs? We are living in a high tech world. Every electronic gadget has to be fast, exciting and gratification has to be immediate. Viewers of 'Click' will know that the industry brings out something new to tempt our obsession with all things cyber and virtual with frightening regularity. One can of course play bridge on line but this is another example of people interacting with others, who may or may not be real, in a solitary environment, an introverted world - we are losing the ability to socialise. A part of going to play real bridge with real people in a real place should not be surrendered easily. However, I fear that such activity may be the domain of a dwindling number of predominately older people, unless the image of the game or some of the discipline required to learn it changes somewhat.
Writing in 'The Independent' (Monday October 27th. 2014), Maureen Hiron, The Independent's bridge correspondent, expressed fears for the future of what may be claimed to be the world's most sophisticated and subtle card game. She believes it to be both an image problem and too complicated, especially for younger people. "The world's most sophisticated and subtle card game has got a serious image problem. While poker conjures up notions of fast cars, loose women and all-nighters in Vegas, bridge is more likely to suggest cucumber sandwiches, blue rinses and afternoon naps.
That's why Ms. Hiron, The Independent's in-house expert, set out to create a faster, funkier version that would bring younger players flocking to the green baize." I can hear the purists shouting with outrage already! "Two years ago, Maureen Hiron -The Independent's bridge correspondent - was playing a weeknight club game with her expat friends in Marbella when there was a break in play. Table seven had been asked to speed up a little. The instruction, quite literally, fell on deaf ears. That night, table seven consisted of a 98-year-old golfing Canadian called Sidney Matthews; Edith Gross, 95, a former ballerina who once danced for Adolf Hitler; Lilian Matthews, a Spanish international bridge player, 90; and 90-year-old Lorenzo Runeberg, a Finnish international known as "Ruthless Runie". They had a combined age of 373.
For Hiron, a British international herself, there couldn't have been a clearer example of the way bridge is becoming a dangerously old game. She is not the only one to make this observation. Ever since poker took off in Britain in the last decade, bridge has been fighting an uphill battle. Although, worldwide, 200 million people play bridge, it is an increasingly ageing constituency. And in Britain, despite signs in the Nineties that the game was bursting with life, there are now fewer than 30,000 members of the English Bridge Union, the game's governing body. The average age of EBU members is 55 (for the American Contract Bridge League that figure is over 60).
As a solution towards this she has created a game called Abridged, a simplified version of bridge. It gets rid of bidding, the most complicated part of the game and uses colours, not suits. Face cards have been replaced by the numbers 11,12,13 and 14. Abridged is a huge hit in America. After an initial sell out run, another 50,000 boards are about to hit the shops. Can it be the same here in Britain?
"I can see what is happening in bridge," says Hiron. "Because it's become so complex, because the learning curve has become so huge, people are put off by it. It's only natural. Bridge is a living, breathing game, and it has developed. That's fine for committed players but it means that to learn the game can be eternal for some people. What I have done is to get rid of the complicated part of the game, so people can start playing in twenty minutes. "
Chair of the English Bridge Union Peter Stoken had this to say about it. "There's absolutely no reason why the average age of bridge players should be going up. It's entirely our own fault for not coming to grips earlier with what we should be doing. We've come to realise that bridge needs a change of culture, and what we need to do is to create happy, friendly clubs where you can get a good game. One of the blights of bridge in the past, for instance, has been the bad behaviour of some. God knows, I was guilty of it in my youth. It's usually partners getting at each other, and it's incredibly off-putting."

A look inside the daily life of Oracle's billionaire founder Larry Ellison, who owns almost an entire island and will do whatever it takes to win

Larry Ellison kissing trophy sailing Oracle

Larry Ellison likes to win — and he's good at it.

According to Forbes, the tech mogul recently got $5 billion richer over the course of just two days.

Ellison came from a poor background and dropped out of college twice. In what proved to be a true "rags to riches" story, the billionaire cofounded software company Oracle in 1977 and acquired a reputation as Silicon Valley's bad boy in the ensuing decades.

But what does Ellison — whom Forbes estimated is worth $61.5 billion — get up to every day since stepping down as Oracle's CEO in 2014? Make no mistake, the tech mogul isn't retired — he's still the company's chief technology officer and chairman.

Here's a look at the daily life of Oracle founder Larry Ellison:

The 72-year-old billionaire is no stranger to controversy. Ellison acquired a reputation for hyper-competitive behavior when he ran Oracle.

“How my grandma’s little room launched me into fortune” Nigerian first class graduate who won £25,000 British Royal Academy prize
27-year-old Benson Godwin emerged the overall winner of the British Royal Academy of Engineering for Africa in Kenya, carting away the £25,000 (10 million Nigerian Naira) prize. He is a first class graduate of systems engineering from University of Lagos.

Born into a family of six, the Akwa Ibom indegene lost his father as a child and was brought up by his grandmother who was a school principal. In this interview, he speaks on how he turned his grandma’s room into a workshop where he assembled the project that fetched him the British Royal Academy prize.

  Educational background

I had my primary and secondary education in Ansarudeen, Surulere, Lagos. Then I gained admission into University of Lagos to study systems engineering. After my National Youth Service (NYSC) in Ibadan, Oyo State, I worked as Information Security Associate in Deloite- Akintola -Williams. It was at that point that I developed a passion to work on my project, TUTERIA. Then I resigned to concentrate on my project.

 What is TUTERIA all about?

It is a system engineering software used for teaching and mentoring students. I developed the idea. It will interest you to know that I devoted my life and energy to this project. TUTERIA involves assembling software engineering gadgets and when I was introduced to the British Academy, I gave it a thought. I started the project and the work progressed. We link people who want to learn and those who want to teach together at their convenient time. It is an online platform for learners to meet teachers who take courses with them. On the platform, we have teachers who teach various languages. For instance, as a Yoruba person, you can hook on to a teacher who would teach you Hausa. For others, it could be dancing, singing, playing musical instruments, engineering, fashion and many more .

Here you are taught at your convenient time and wherever you choose without going through the classroom. This is the first of its kind in Nigeria and we are soon going worldwide. So, in a nutshell, we provide Quality Personalised Learning(QPL). When did the idea of TUTERIA come to your mind? The idea dropped in my mind in 2005 while I was still in, secondary school. I used to tutor a man’s son who lived close to my house. I taught him mathematics and I was paid N6000 monthly but the man was not faithful with payment. This got me thinking , it was in a bid to provide a solution to this problem that the idea of TUTERIA started ringing in my mind. This project came to limelight immediately I resigned from Deloite Akintola-Williams.

I worked on this project for over seven months with my friend, Abiola Oyeniyi, who is also a first class graduate of systems engineering and now the Chief Technical Officer of Tuteria Nigeria Limited. He was one of the finalists of Google Sub-Sahara Developer Challenge in 2013. When I resigned from Deloitte-Akinola-Williams, Abiola also left and joined me in my grandmother’s house where we toiled day and night to assemble the parts of the TUTERIA. So, by the time I got into the British Royal Academy of Engineering for Africa, we had almost perfected the project. How did you get to know about the academy and what is its goal?

I got to know about the British Royal Academy of Engineering for Africa in July 2016. A friend who was part of them in 2016 introduced it to me and I gave it a trial. I applied a day to the closing date and, luckily, for me, I was among the selected sixteen finalists. We went through a-6-month training and mentorship both online and physical. The grand finale of the competition took place in Kenya where I emerged the overall winner in Africa. The aim of the academy is to identify and support innovative ideas in technology in Africa. The academy is not only looking at innovative ideas that will raise money but also creating impact and benefits in many areas of employment, social benefits, health that are not accessible to many. Moving forward?

It is a massive opportunity for Nigeria because it is the first time a Nigerian emerged the winner. It tells the world that something positive can come out of Nigeria. It makes it clear that not all Nigerians are into corruption, cyber crimes and the rest. I want to encourage young Nigerians to look inwards and see what they can do. We all have ideas but only a few are ready to pay the price for the manifestation. I am driven by passion and not money.

The money attached to the award is totally deployed to the development of the company and not for personal use. My partner and I are determined to make the company come to limelight. The money is to properly position the company. We have to engage many categories of engineers and service providers to reach our goal. I won’t go crazy with ten million naira when I know that I can get trillions if I work harder. Are you married? Yes.

My wife, Jemimah, is a medical doctor and she has been amazing in her support for my passion and bothers less if I fail to give her the romantic gestures that go with a marital life. She understands that I am pursing a dream and, today, to the glory of God that dream has attracted world’s attention. Your advice for parents? Times are changing rapidly. Parents should allow their children to discover themselves and understand this by giving them the support they need.

They should make sure they do not follow the regular path of life because people who make history don’t follow the regular path of life. Bill Gates, Mark Zucerberg and others dropped out of school and today they are great people. Parents should always be their children’s backbones.

What Jeff Bezos gets right and wrong with his unorthodox approach to philanthropy

Jeff Bezosrew Angerer/Getty Images

Jeff Bezos, the world’s second-richest person, trails his peers when it comes to generosity. His family’s donations to hospitals, museums and universities rarely make headlines, and he hasn’t signed the Giving Pledge, a commitment by many of the world’s richest people to give away most of their wealth.

So when the Amazon founder recently turned to Twitter to signal that he might give most of his fortune away in an open call for advice, it stunned philanthropic circles. Probably not coincidentally, this unusual appeal for advice surfaced shortly before news broke about Amazon’s buyout of Whole Foods. If that deal goes through, it will give Bezos’s fortune, pegged at US$75.6 billion by Bloomberg, a $2.8 billion boost.

As a scholar who studies the ethics of philanthropy, I think Bezos is bucking two big trends embraced by his super-rich peers: a commitment to long-term impact and a technocratic decision-making strategy.

A short-term focus

Bezos noted on Twitter that he was specifically looking for good charities that could make a difference as soon as possible. This preference for short-term impact has puzzled many experts on giving.

As Stanford University political scientist Rob Reich argues, the ability of big donors to make risky, long-term bets that benefit society is what justifies the tax breaks and the limited regulation foundations enjoy. Policymakers can then adopt philanthropy’s successful innovations and implement them on a larger scale – like the 911 system, which the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation invented and piloted in the 1970s.

By investing in medical research and experiments in education policy, for instance, today’s biggest givers, such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg and their wives, Melinda Gates and Priscilla Chan, tend to help find solutions to challenges not met by the private sector or the government. By spurning long-term impact in favor of meeting urgent needs, Bezos is effectively rejecting the standard approach to large-scale giving.

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla ChanAPRefreshingly, Bezos seemed to acknowledge that billionaires like him who are profiting from an ongoing global economic transformation have duties to those who have been left behind. He noted on Twitter that “helping people in the here and now – short term” could complement the long-term contributions that he sees his business ventures making to civilization.

But if Bezos believes that the most well-off players in an economic system are obliged to aid the least well-off, he may be undermining the case for philanthropy itself. As I explained in my dissertation on the role of private philanthropy in a liberal democracy, charitable donations are inherently worse than government spending at meeting basic needs.

Listening to the rest of us

Bezos’s appeal also made waves because of its apparent concession to populist criticism, which targets philanthropy’s elitist elements.

Many big donors take a technocratic approach to their giving. They regard themselves as experts in the areas they address and sometimes get caught circumventing public opposition to their ideas.

A group called the Communities for Teaching Excellence that was largely funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation closed after critics accused the foundation of “astroturfing” – creating artificial grassroots organizations – to generate support for its education initiatives. (The BMGF is a funder of The Conversation Media Group.) And the foundation led by Eli and Edythe Broad once secretly offered New Jersey’s government grant money to bolster charter schools, a policy the Los Angeles billionaire couple champions.

By contrast, Bezos opted to delegate decision-making – at least initially – to users of Twitter, arguably the world’s largest forum for public deliberation.

Objectively speaking, conducting a straw poll over social media is not a fair or serious way to hear out the masses. Only about one in five Americans is active on Twitter, and Bezos has not yet disclosed his methods for selecting winning responses.

Cynics may see Bezos’ public appeal as a strategy that creates the appearance of democratizing philanthropy without any of the constraints required when donors follow democratic procedures.

Reconciling philanthropy and democracy

But Bezos’ request for ideas, which within days had amassed more than 40,000 tweeted responses and considerable media coverage, might help reconcile the conflicts between philanthropy and democracy.

The term “philanthropopulism” first surfaced a decade ago, as big donors sought new ways to make their giving more effective. Now, emerging research on the wisdom of crowds shows that large numbers of minds often make better decisions than small numbers of experts. Perhaps, well-designed procedures for involving the public in giving decisions could help improve the quality of the gifts.

That might also help to respond to critics like Stan Katz, a historian who worries that today’s biggest donors are betraying the principles of American democracy. The ideal of democracy requires that everyone enjoy equal opportunities to influence matters of public concern. But as private wealth finances a widening array of public functions, and inequality proliferates, ordinary people are losing more and more control over their common affairs.

Katz observes that foundations – not voters – are behind the explosion of charter schools and high-stakes testing and the decline of teachers’ unions. His observations corroborate disturbing findings by political scientists Martin Gilens and Benjamin Page that the middle class no longer exerts any noticeable influence over public policy.

In the absence of national political will to contain economic inequality, a request for public input on big philanthropic decisions could restore some democratic control over public life. If Bezos can help catalyze this movement, it may be good news for philanthropy and democracy alike.

          The Hitchikers Guide to 2011

It’s exactly 30 years since the TV series of Hitch Hikers guide to the Galaxy popularized the book to millions of people, and the genius of Douglas Adams was writ large on the nations consciousness.

30 years is a long time, and many things can happen, many developments can occur, and while it is true that the Earth has NOT been bull-dozered to make way for an intergalactic superhighway, it is striking how many of the things Douglas Adams wrote about in his futuristic fiction have come to life!

For a start, there’s the Internet, that in 1981 that was barely a twinkle in Bill Gates’ eye. But when Adams described the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (the magical book with the answer to everything...) it sounds almost exactly like the internet

“It has the answer to everything known, compiled by people all round the galaxy beaming in their copy and it being instantly available to anybody to read – over something called the subethernet.”

Or then there’s the Ipad/ Smart phone technology he describes:

“It's sort of like an electronic book, you press the screen, and it lights up and gives you an index and characters appear upon the surface.”

Visionary! There’s even predictions that came true about Artificial Intelligence, Genetically Modified Animals, Biological Computers, and satellite technology!

It’s almost to the point where I wouldn’t be surprised if the earth ended up being a giant super computer run by mice! Well, I would be surprised, just not as much as I could be.

Pick up the books again if you get the chance – they’re a staple at second hand shops – and have a laugh, they are truly as brilliant and as funny as you remember them! And you might even get a clue as to what the future holds for the 2020’s!
A look inside the daily life of Oracle's billionaire founder Larry Ellison, who owns almost an entire island and will do whatever it takes to win

En Educating for the New World Order, B.K.

t3n.de: Du bist dann schnell ins Silicon Valley gegangen. Damals ein noch ungewöhnlicherer Schritt als heute. Wieso?

t3n.de: Was war deine erste Firma?

t3n.de: Was kann Deutschland besser machen?

How To Build Meaning In Your Life And Career

Shutterstock

Imagine if you discovered the sweet spot of purpose in your life, work and organization.

We’ve all heard that discovering your core purpose is a key ingredient to achieving your goals. But what about the purpose of your role at work? Or the purpose of your organization? Discovering where these three elements intersect is an important part of knowing where you fit in, and where you’re headed.

Dan Pontefract is a Chief Envisioner at Canadian telecommunications company Telus, and the author of Flat Army and most recently The Purpose Effect: Building Meaning In Yourself, Your Role, and Your Organization.

I recently interviewed Dan to discuss the subject of his latest work, and how understanding purpose from top to bottom can increase employee engagement. (The transcript below has been edited lightly for space and clarity.)

Kevin Kruse: You call the intersection of purpose in three areas: yourself, your role, the organization, as “the sweet spot.”

Dan Pontefract: What I want you to do is envision a Venn diagram. A Venn diagram is composed of three circles. There’s one at the top, and then there’s two at the bottom, and they’re all intersecting. When I was researching and then thinking about my own life and all the time I’ve spent in the academic world and in the corporate world, it dawned on me that there are a lot of books and a lot of authors out there who aspire or predict or recommend that purpose of self and life is important, and it is.

There weren’t a lot of people looking at the integration between work and life and purpose. As I began to, as we all do, peel this onion back a little bit when we’re writing and we’re researching and interviewing, it was this Venn diagram that kept popping up in my head and in some of the interviews I was doing.

At the top of the Venn diagram is what I call ‘personal purpose’. Then at the bottom, the other two circles, on the right hand side is ‘organizational purpose’, and on the left hand side is ‘role purpose’. Here’s how it works: We all have a life, and, as I mentioned, life-work integration, so personal purpose, that’s our life. That’s the circle at the top. That’s “What am I going to do to define myself? Who am I going to be in life and at work? Who am I going to be known as? How am I going to show up each and every day?” Those are the questions: What am I? Who am I? How am I? That’s the ‘personal’ side.

See, we all, I think, most of us, maybe not Bill Gates, but we’ve got to go to work. Ultimately, what’s happening is if you’re in an organization that is operating with purpose, I found that if that purpose mindset of the organization is in lockstep with how you’re defining yourself— the “what you want to be when you grow up”, if you will—there’s a really good combination there, a good relationship.

But that’s not enough, because we all go to work for the organization in which we work for in a role. For example, you may be a call center agent. You may be a sales exec. You may be a business analyst. You may be in marketing. You have a role. When there is lockstep between your personal purpose— that’s again back to “who you are”, etc.—the organization, which is hopefully demonstrating its purpose, and in the role that you occupy, if you feel valued, if you feel that you’re delivering value, ergo you feel valuable, hopefully you have the purpose mindset in your role.

The Sun, Wallstreet Journal, New York Post, Boston Herald, Chicago Sun-Times.

"It's absolutely true we set out to expose Microsoft's covert activities… I feel very good about what we did … Maybe our investigation organization may have done things unsavory, but it's not illegal. We got the truth out," Ellison said.

t3n.de: Du bist dann schnell ins Silicon Valley gegangen. Damals ein noch ungewöhnlicherer Schritt als heute. Wieso?

t3n.de: Was war deine erste Firma?

Are You In?
"Are You In?" is the Detroit Red Wings' tagline for this year's playoffs. As I am a Red Wings fan (in much the same sense as Bill Gates runs a software company), I am definitely "in."

So, for the next couple of months I'll be spending a lot of time glued to my new 40-inch LCD, following the Wings to what will hopefully be another championship.

The competition will be tougher than ever. The Wings start Thursday against Nashville, a team they have owned in the playoffs but which can inflict significant physical damage. (I'm not accusing them of thuggishness, but hey, if the shoe fits...)

After Nashville, who knows? It looks like San Jose is a good bet to be there all the way to the Western Conference final, and they're a team with which the Wings have had playoff troubles in the past. If there's a team that has a chance to dash the Wings' hopes, it's San Jose.

But, this being hockey, there might be a big surprise in store. Which Western Conference team could be this year's sleeper?

One thing's certain: playoff hockey is intense like no other sport can be, and it's a lot of fun to watch, so I'm looking forward to seeing as much of it as possible.

Go Wings!

UPDATE: Looks like San Jose got surpised by the Flames last night. Like I said...this being hockey, there might be a big surprise in store...

Comment on Nevada legalizes pot by Brian Kelly
In the prohibitionist's world, anybody who consumes the slightest amount of marijuana responsibly in the privacy of their own homes are "stoners" and "dopers" that need to be incarcerated in order to to protect society. In their world, any marijuana use equates to marijuana abuse, and it is their God given duty to worry about "saving us all" from the "evils" of marijuana use. Who are they to tell us we can't choose marijuana, the safer choice instead of alcohol for relaxation, after a long, hard day, in the privacy of our own homes? People who consume marijuana are smart, honest, hard working, educated, and successful people too, who "follow the law" also.(except for their marijuana consumption under it's current prohibition of course) . Not the stereotypical live at home losers prohibitionists make them out to be. They are doctors, lawyers, professors, movie stars, and politicians too. Several Presidents of The United States themselves, along with Justin Trudeau, Bill Gates, and Carl Sagan have all confessed to their marijuana use. As have a long and extensive list of successful people throughout history at one point or other in their lives. Although that doesn't mean a dam thing to people who will make comments like "dopers" and "stoners" about anybody who uses the slightest amount of Marijuana although it is way safer than alcohol. To these people any use equals abuse, and that is really ignorant and full of hypocrisy. While our society promotes, advertises, and even glorifies alcohol consumption like it's an All American pastime. There is nothing worse about relaxing with a little marijuana after a long hard day than having a drink or two of alcohol. So come off those high horses of yours. Who are you to dictate to the rest of society that we can't enjoy Marijuana, the safer choice over alcohol, in the privacy of our own homes? We've worked real hard our whole lives to provide for our loved ones. We don't appreciate prohibitionists trying to impose their will and morals upon us all. Has a marijuana consumer ever forced you to use it? Probably not. So nobody has the right to force anybody not to either. Don't try to impose your morality and "clean living" upon everybody else with Draconian Marijuana Laws, and we won't think you're such prohibitionist hypocrites. Legalize Nationwide! Support Each and Every Marijuana Legalization Initiative!
