Foto: Matt Cardy/Getty Images

Facebook's new attempt to get both brands and people talking to bots on Messenger

Discover socialFacebook

Facebook is trying to breathe life back into branded chat bots.

The platform is rolling out a new section within Facebook Messenger, "Discover on Messenger," where users can browse and find bots, nearby places and businesses and message them.

Here’s how it works: When you tap on the Discover icon on the lower right-hand corner of the Messenger Home screen, you can browse by category, recently visited businesses and featured experiences. Messenger includes a broader set of categories like news, entertainment and finance, among others, to help users narrow down their bot searches. Users will also be able to find their recently used bots from a free-form search field on the Messenger home screen.

"Our goal with Discover is to ensure that experiences in Messenger are compelling, high quality and easy to find," Facebook said in a statement on its blog announcing the update. "This latest update makes it even more intuitive for people to find what they care about most."

It first announced the section at its developer conference back in April, along with a new vision for chat bots. Instead of being focused on direct, human-to-bot conversations, Facebook now wants bots to only pop up only when they can be of assistance.

Chat bots were originally seen not only as a way for Facebook to monetize Messenger, but an attempt to join Amazon, Apple and other tech giants in their quests to develop powerful, artificially-intelligent assistants. But after the initial hype last summer–when as many as seven bot-focused startups raised first funding rounds according to CBInsights–these automated tools have largely failed to catch on.

Early Messenger bots were plagued with bugs, and didn’t have the ability to maintain fairly basic conversations. Even Facebook's head of Messenger, David Marcus, admitted at a tech conference last September that bots were "overhyped." Back in March, Facebook also admitted that its bots hit a failure rate of 70%, implying that they could only fulfil 30% of requests without some sort of human intervention.

With this step, Facebook seems to want to revive bots, Matt Lang, senior digital strategist at AI-focused agency Rain, told Business Insider. It will likely attract the interest of brands and marketers since messaging apps, in general, continue to be where consumers are spending increasingly more time. It is prudent for brands to be on emerging platforms early, with a longer term strategy in mind, he said.

"Including a free-form search and new discover space feels like familiar territory–with Apple, it was the App store, and more recently with Amazon it is the Alexa Skill shop," he said. "When it comes to these giants, brands want to be featured prominently so that users can find them, and this will be true in the new Messenger space too."

Still, even with these updates, Facebook Messenger has yet to find a meaningful way to monetize its vast user base. As Business Insider reported earlier, Facebook isn't charging businesses to create or host their bots in Messenger, and it doesn't plan to take a cut of digital payments in the app either.

For now, it is focusing on testing out ads in Messenger through ads. Brands can run ads in newsfeed that open up a Messenger thread as well as sponsored messages. It recently rolled out Instagram to Messenger ads as well, enabling businesses to have conversations with users who click on Instagram ads in Messenger.

The iPhone just turned 10 years old — but Apple's greatest challenge is in the next decade (AAPL, MSFT, FB, AMZN)

Tim CookREUTERS/Stephen Lam

You might have heard, the iPhone turned 10 years old this week.

Apple has good reason to celebrate.

The iPhone turned Apple from a manufacturer of trendy computers and music players into the world's most valuable company. The App Store is an economy unto itself. And all new smartphones, no matter who makes them or which operating system they run, are measured against the iPhone — and (mostly) fall short of the bar set by Apple.

As we enter the second decade of the smartphone revolution, Apple is still the one to beat.

But that strength is also Apple's biggest vulnerability.

Apple's biggest rivals — including Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and Google — are all plotting to systematically undermine the Apple empire. And they all know that Apple's dependency on the status quo is a golden opportunity for them to steal the advantage.

Green-eyed monster

Apple's iPhone dominance is grating to pretty much anybody who doesn't work at the company. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has long lamented that the social network didn't build a smartphone platform while it had the chance; Amazon has removed the ability to buy Kindle books from an iPhone rather than pay Apple its standard 30% cut.

Sure, Google's Android is a far more popular smartphone operating system than Apple iOS. But it's Apple's iPhone that captures the majority of the profits in the smartphone market

Barack Obama holding BlackBerryAP

The iPhone/iOS combo has proven impervious to every attempt to topple it. The list of victims is long: Nokia's Symbian; RIM's BlackBerry OS; HP's WebOS, even Microsoft's various Windows phone operating systems are almost entirely gone now, like tears in rain.

With Apple's lock-up on smartphones all but assured, these competitors have all been forced to look elsewhere to come up with ways to chip away at the iPhone's fortified position.

The peanut gallery

Facebook, for instance, is placing its bets on virtual reality, augmented reality, and chatbots. Virtual reality headsets are a niche now, but they could become the next big hardware platform — a platform it would own. Similarly, chatbots give a way for Facebook to offer premium services to its users, without paying the App Store cut.

Amazon has its Echo line of smart speakers, which use the Alexa virtual agent to accomplish simple tasks with only your voice. The newest Echo Show, too, adds a screen. Alexa is slowly growing into the operating system of choice for smart home appliances, getting an early lead on Apple's still-nascent HomeKit ecosystem.

Amazon EchoAP/Jeff Chiu

Microsoft was first to market with real, standalone augmented reality goggles, the HoloLens. Put them on, and holograms are projected straight into your field of view. It's seen within Microsoft as the next great frontier for Windows, after missing the smartphone revolution in the first place.

Microsoft and Facebook both agree on one important, overarching point: Augmented reality can replace the iPhone, or anything else with a screen. Why carry a separate phone if your texts and games are projected straight into your field of vision?

As for Google, it's working on all of the above, as is its wont. It has its Google Home smart speaker, a grab bag of artificial intelligence enhancements to its existing apps, and a growing focus on virtual reality with its Daydream ecosystem. Even the much-maligned Google Glass headset is now reported to be in preparation for a comeback.

Apple's move

Apple is coming into this at a distinct disadvantage.

So much of the company's fortunes are tied up in the iPhone that it can't just up and move to whatever the next big thing turns out to be.

With no real smartphone play to speak of, Microsoft, Facebook, and Amazon aren't handcuffed by the legacy of a smartphone business. That gives them the freedom to move forward without worrying about hurting a cash cow. Google too has more freedom, since its real revenue is tied to search advertising, not the Android smartphone software it gives away for free.

So Apple has to be really careful about every step it takes away from the iPhone. Over the years, it's made small but important moves to create the next big thing, starting in 2011 with the Siri virtual assistant. This turned out to be prescient — while Amazon's Alexa gets a lot of credit for kickstarting interest in voice assistants, Siri is still the most widely used.

HoloLens Case WesternYouTube/Microsoft

We're already starting to see more forward-looking competitive hedges come into play. Apple's Airpods wireless earbuds and the HomePod smart speaker are both designed to bring Siri closer into your life, and thus, keep Alexa and systems like it out.

That's just a short-term play. A longer term gambit for Apple is ARkit, a way for developers to build augmented reality into their own apps using the iPhone camera. If and when Apple releases smart glasses of its own, it means there will be a whole selection of ARkit-powered apps to go with them, too. It's a way to bridge the dominance of the iPhone today with the hypothetical future dominance of Apple goggles tomorrow.

The risk

This, right now, in 2017, is a precipice point. The bets these companies are making or not making today are going to shape the technology market for the next, next decade. All these various technologies, from artificial intelligence, to chatbots, to augmented and virtual reality, are real and imminent.

So I don't envy Apple's position. Move too slowly, and there are no shortage of rivals waiting in the wings to fill the gap and claim the crown for the next major market shift. Move too quickly, though, and Apple sacrifices its famous willingness to build stuff that just works.

The only thing that's clear from here is that the days are numbered for the iPhone as we know it. The hard part, of managing this next wave of massive and tumultuous change, is only just beginning.

semantify.it, a platform for creation, publication and distribution of semantic annotations. (arXiv:1706.10067v1 [cs.IR])

Authors: Elias Kärle, Umutcan Şimşek, Dieter Fensel

The application of semantic technologies to content on the web is, in many regards, as important as urgent. Search engines, chatbots, intelligent personal assistants and other technologies increasingly rely on content published as semantic structured data. Yet the process of creating this kind of data is still complicated and the necessity of it is widely unknown. The semantify.it platform implements an approach to solve three of the most challenging question regarding the publication of structured semantic data, namely: a) what vocabulary to use, b) how to create annotation files and c) how to publish or integrate annotations within a website without programming. This paper presents the idea and the development of the semantify.it platform. It demonstrates, that the creation process of semantically annotated data must not be hard, shows use cases and pilot users of the created software and presents where the development of this platform or alike projects could go to in the future.

Are robots taking over the world's finance jobs

The year is 2030. You're in a business school lecture hall, where just a handful of students are attending a finance class.

The dismal turnout has nothing to with professorial style, school ranking or subject matter. Students simply aren't enrolled, because there are no jobs out there for finance majors.

Today, finance, accounting, management and economics are among universities' most popular subjects worldwide, particularly at graduate level, due to high employability. But that's changing.

According to consulting firm Opimas, in years to come it will become harder and harder for universities to sell their business-related degrees. Research shows that 230,000 jobs in the sector could disappear by 2025, filled by "artificial intelligence agents".

Are robo-advisers the future of finance?

A new generation of AI

Many market analysts believe so.

Investments in automated portfolios rose 210% between 2014 and 2015, according to the research firm Aite Group.

Robots have already taken over Wall Street, as hundreds of financial analysts are being replaced with software or robo-advisors.

In the US, claims a 2013 paper by two Oxford academics, 47% percent of jobs are at "high risk" of being automated within the next 20 years – 54% of lost jobs will be in finance.

This is not just an American phenomenon. Indian banks, too, have reported a 7% decline in head count for two quarters in a row due to the introduction of robots in the workplace.

Perhaps this is unsurprising. After all, the banking and finance industry is principally built on processing information, and some of its key operations, like passbook updating or cash deposit, are already highly digitised.

A man leaves an Axis Bank automated teller machine (ATM) in New Delhi, India. (Adnan Abidi/Reuters)

Now, banks and financial institutions are rapidly adopting a new generation of Artificial Intelligence-enabled technology (AI) to automate financial tasks usually carried out by humans, like operations, wealth management, algorithmic trading and risk management.

For instance, JP Morgan's Contract Intelligence, or COIN, program, which runs on a machine learning system, helped the bank shorten the time it takes to review loan documents and decrease the number of loan-servicing mistakes.

Such is the growing dominance of AI in the banking sector that, Accenture predicts, within the next three years it will become the primary way banks interact with their customers. AI would enable more simple user interfaces, their 2017 report notes, which would help banks create a more human-like customer experience.

Customers at Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest, for instance, may soon be interacting with customers with the help of a virtual chatbot named Luvo.

Luvo, which was designed using IBM Watson technology, can understand and learn from human interactions, ultimately making the flesh-and-blood workforce redundant.

Meanwhile, HDFC, one of India's largest private-sector banks, has launched Eva. India's first AI-based banking chatbot can assimilate knowledge from thousands of sources and provide answers in simple language in less than 0.4 seconds. At HFDC Eva joins Ira, the bank's first humanoid branch assistant.

AI has also made inroads in the investment industry, where, many financial analysts say, a sophisticated trading machine capable of learning and thinking will eventually make today's most advanced and complex investment algorithms look primitive.

Advisory bots are allowing companies to evaluate deals, investments, and strategy in a fraction of the time it takes today's quantitative analysts to do so using traditional statistical tools.

Former Barclays head Antony Jenkins, who called the disruptive automation of banking sector an "Uber moment", predicts that technology will make fully half of all bank branches and financial-services employees across the globe redundant within ten years.

Goodbye, human fund managers.

The fintech grads of the future

Universities are now revising their educational blueprint to adapt to this technological disruption in the finance job market.

Both Standford University and Georgetown University business schools are planning to offer so-called "fintech" in their MBA programmes, hoping to teach students how to become masters of financial technology.

And the Wales-based Wrexham Glyndwr University has announced the launch of the UK's first undergraduate degree in fintech.

But fintech is so new and diverse that academics are having difficulty to construct a syllabus for Financial Technology 101, let alone more advanced topics on AI. The lack of academic textbooks and expert professors are additional challenges.

Robots gone wild

Still, it is not clear that AI and automation will actually prove advantageous for banks.

Too much reliance on AI could backfire if financial institutions lose the human touch most customers favour.

There are other risks, too. Robo-advisers are cheap and save time when creating a simple investment portfolio, but they may struggle to take the correct precautionary measures when markets become volatile, especially when thousands, maybe millions, of machines are all trying to do the same thing while operating at great speed.

In August 2012, robo stock traders at Knight Capital Group went on a spending spree and lost $440 million in just 45 minutes.

Are traders soon to be replaced by robo-traders? Brendan (McDermid/Reuters)

High expectations for the performance of these well-programmed robo-traders could also cause chaos in the key trading centres around the world.

There is no single algorithm that can combine multiple volatile variables with a multidimensional economic forecasting model that works for all investors. Expecting that could prove a potentially fatal error for financial markets.

And how will investors be protected when robots make the wrong decision? According to the rulings of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), robo-advisers require registration in the same way human investment advisers do. They are also subject to the rules of the Investment Advisers Act.

But it is difficult to apply to robots the financial regulations designed to govern human behaviour.

The SEC's rules, created to protect the investors, require that advisers adhere to a fiduciary standard by which they unconditionally put the client's best interests ahead of their own. Concerned US regulators have asked whether it is practical for robots to follow rules when their decisions and recommendations are generated not by ratiocination but by algorithms.

The ConversationThis conundrum demonstrates one fact clearly: it is hard to completely replace humans. There will always be demand for a real live person to act as check when and if our robots go rogue.

An interrogation of a Game of Thrones chatbot that may know serious spoilers

An official chatbot has been released to promote HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones, and hidden in its depths may be some key clues as to how the series pans out.

Embedded into Facebook Messenger, social media users can talk with the quip-making GoTBot which features the avatar, if not deadly persuasion, of a white walker.

Catch Digital has created a quip-making chatbot to coincide with the return of Game of Thrones to TV screens across the world, finally unveiling the chaos that ensues when ‘Winter has Come’.

The bot launches to the public on Monday, and helps build up the lore behind GoT locations and characters to anyone who feels the wait for these new episodes has been too long.

Utilising Wit.ai frameworks, the bot can learn from users and connect them with stores of GoT information, while also throwing out a joke or Easter Egg or two. The agency said: “The more questions users ask, the more data we can capture and ensure that we update GoTBot so that it can answer these queries.”

Here’s some golden nuggets from the bot. Talk to it here.
